Microsoft has integrated DeepSeek's R1 AI model into its Azure AI Foundry platform and GitHub, making it easier for developers to incorporate the cost-effective model into their AI applications.
This move follows R1's rise to prominence for its ability to be trained at a fraction of the cost of leading AI models like those from OpenAI.
DeepSeek's R1 model stands out for its efficiency, requiring far fewer resources than typical AI models that depend on expensive chips from companies like Nvidia. As a result, it is significantly cheaper to train.
This has raised concerns among investors, leading to a sharp decline in Nvidia's market value by nearly $600 billion after news of R1's success broke.
The integration of R1 into Azure AI Foundry allows developers to quickly experiment and integrate the model into their projects. Asha Sharma, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of AI Platform, highlighted the rapid pace at which R1 enables AI development.
Moreover, the model has undergone extensive safety checks, including automated reviews and red teaming, to mitigate potential risks before deployment.
Initially released as an open-source model earlier this month, DeepSeek's R1 is now easily accessible through Microsoft's platforms. Microsoft is also working on a smaller, distilled version of R1 for Copilot Plus PCs, enabling users to run the model locally without relying on cloud resources, further enhancing accessibility.
The integration of R1 into Microsoft's ecosystem marks just the beginning. With its ability to lower the cost of training AI models, R1 has the potential to transform AI development, making it more accessible and affordable for a wider range of users.
As this technology continues to evolve, it could disrupt current market dynamics and reshape how AI applications are built and deployed.

OpenAI appeals data preservation order in NYT copyright case
OpenAI is appealing an order in a copyright case brought by the New York Times that requires it to preserve ChatGPT output data indefinitely, arguing that the order conflicts with privacy commitments it has made with users. Last month, a court said OpenAI had to preserve and segregate all output log data after the Times asked for the data to be preserved. 'We will fight any demand that compromises our users' privacy; this is a core principle,' OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein was asked to vacate the May data preservation order on June 3, a court filing showed. The newspaper sued OpenAI and Microsoft in 2023, accusing them of using millions of its articles without permission to train the large language model behind its popular chatbot. Stein said in an April court opinion that the Times had made a case that OpenAI and Microsoft were responsible for inducing users to infringe its copyrights. The opinion explained an earlier order that rejected parts of an OpenAI and Microsoft motion to dismiss, saying that the Times' 'numerous' and 'widely publicized' examples of ChatGPT producing material from its articles justified allowing the claims to continue.

Nvidia chips make gains in training largest AI systems, new data shows
SAN FRANCISCO: Nvidia's newest chips have made gains in training large artificial intelligence systems, new data released on Wednesday showed, with the number of chips required to train large language models dropping dramatically. MLCommons, a nonprofit group that publishes benchmark performance results for AI systems, released new data about chips from Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, among others, for training, in which AI systems are fed large amounts of data to learn from. While much of the stock market's attention has shifted to a larger market for AI inference, in which AI systems handle questions from users, the number of chips needed to train the systems is still a key competitive concern. China's DeepSeek claims to create a competitive chatbot using far fewer chips than U.S. rivals. The results were the first that MLCommons has released about how chips fared at training AI systems such as Llama 3.1 405B, an open-source AI model released by Meta Platforms that has a large enough number of what are known as 'parameters' to give an indication of how the chips would perform at some of the most complex training tasks in the world, which can involve trillions of parameters. Nvidia CEO praises Trump move to scrap some AI export curbs Nvidia and its partners were the only entrants that submitted data about training that large model, and the data showed that Nvidia's new Blackwell chips are, on a per-chip basis, more than twice as fast as the previous generation of Hopper chips. In the fastest results for Nvidia's new chips, 2,496 Blackwell chips completed the training test in 27 minutes. It took more than three times that many of Nvidia's previous generation of chips to get a faster time, according to the data. In a press conference, Chetan Kapoor, chief product officer for CoreWeave, which collaborated with Nvidia to produce some of the results, said there has been a trend in the AI industry toward stringing together smaller groups of chips into subsystems for separate AI training tasks, rather than creating homogenous groups of 100,000 chips or more. 'Using a methodology like that, they're able to continue to accelerate or reduce the time to train some of these crazy, multi-trillion parameter model sizes,' Kapoor said.

Microsoft says to step up AI-powered European cybersecurity
PARIS: US tech giant Microsoft said Wednesday that it would step up its cooperation with European governments against cyber threats, including by deploying AI-powered intelligence gathering. Its new European Security Program 'puts AI at the center of our work as a tool to protect traditional cybersecurity needs,' Microsoft Vice Chairman Brad Smith wrote in a blog post. Aiming to deliver real-time intelligence about cyber threats to governments, the scheme will extend to the '27 EU member states, as well as EU accession countries, members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the UK, Monaco, and the Vatican,' he added. Microsoft accused the governments of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea of being behind infiltration of European computer networks for espionage and other purposes. Meanwhile cybercriminals are expanding attacks using tools such as ransomware, which encrypts data on victims' computers and demands they fork over cash to unlock it again. Microsoft to invest $400 million in Switzerland on AI, cloud computing 'We see 600 million attacks on our customers every single day,' Smith told reporters in a briefing ahead of the blog post's release, calling cyberdefence a 'multi-billion-dollar expense for customers across Europe'. AI systems can help detect and identify new forms of attack, Smith wrote in his blog post. But Microsoft has seen malicious actors using the technology for everything from researching targets to writing code and 'social engineering' – or convincing human employees to facilitate access by hackers. And 'influence operations' by nation-states 'are increasingly using AI to mislead and deceive' including with convincing 'deepfake' images, audio and video, Smith added. The company itself 'tracks any malicious use of new AI models we release and proactively prevents known threat actors from using' them, he wrote. Microsoft last month helped police across Europe take down large swathes of digital infrastructure supporting an 'infostealing' network, Lumma, that had been gathering sensitive information like passwords and crypto wallets from victims' devices. In future, members of the company's Digital Crimes Unit will be embedded with Europol's cybercrime specialists in The Hague, Smith wrote, part of a broader increase in collaboration with European security forces. Microsoft's cybersecurity effort is part of a wider push to increase its operations in Europe. The drive comes as trade tensions simmer between the EU and the Trump administration in the US, with many voices questioning European firms' strategic dependence on American-made technology.
