A beloved Michigan teenager was gunned down inside her home by her former high school bowling coach, who then turned the gun on himself in a shocking murder-suicide, police said.
Bedford High School graduate Gwendolyn Smith, 17, was allegedly shot multiple times by Ryne Leist, 38, a former volunteer coach with the school's bowling club.
The horror unfolded inside her stepfather's home in Bedford Township on June 14, Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.
Smith's stepfather Matthew Kennerson discovered the unimaginable scene after he returned home around 6 p.m.
Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough confirmed Leist died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Smith's death was ruled a homicide.
Authorities have not said how married father-of-one Leist entered the home, nor have they detailed any possible motive.
'At this time, the point of entry and access remains under investigation,' Goodnough said during a press conference.
The sheriff also declined to elaborate on the nature of the relationship between the teen and her former coach but emphasized, 'Gwendolyn did not consider the relation between the two of them to be romantic'.
Leist, who had recently resigned from his job at a local bowling alley, had previously worked with the school's bowling club, but was not an official employee of Bedford Public Schools.
He had passed all required background checks to volunteer with youth sports in Michigan, Superintendent Carl Shultz told WTOL.
In a heartbreaking tribute on Facebook, Shultz remembered Smith as, 'an extraordinary young woman whose presence left an indelible mark on our school community.'
'It is with a heavy heart that I share the tragic and heartbreaking news of the loss of one of our own - Gwendolyn Smith, a 2025 graduate of Bedford School,' he wrote.
'Gwen will be remembered for her kindness, her bright spirit, and the joy she brought to those around her.'
The slain teen's stepmother, Heather Smith, expressed the family's devastation in an emotional Facebook post.
'We aren't supposed to outlive our children. Everyone loved Gwen. She was kind, talented and the best kid an evil stepmother could ask for. My middle daughter, my baby, was murdered,' she said.
Kennerson had proudly celebrated his stepdaughter's graduation just two weeks earlier, sharing a smiling photo of her in cap and gown.
'Really proud stepdad!' he wrote at the time. Two weeks later, he added a heartbreaking update: 'Love you forever… I'm so sorry I couldn't save you…'
Shultz has since launched a GoFundMe to help the family, which has raised over $18,000.
'I was compelled to really help them out and make sure they had the resources necessary to be able to take care of what they needed to due to this horrible tragedy,' he told reporters.
'I'm always a parent first, I'm an educator second. But as a parent, I don't know how you get up the next day,' Shultz added.
'They're extremely strong and they're doing everything they can to hold everything together, but I was just trying to help out as much as I could.'
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Bedford community, with many struggling to comprehend how such a horrific act could have happened to such a promising and beloved young woman.
'This tragic and unnecessary loss cannot be explained,' Shultz said. 'It has shaken our entire Bedford community, and our hearts and prayers go out to Gwen's family and the many friends whose lives she touched so deeply.'

The 17-year-old girl charged with shooting dead her mother and stepfather is first seen grinning before bursting into tears as she awaits court's decision to grant bail

A 17-year-old girl charged with shooting dead her mother and stepfather looked like she didn't have a care in the world as she smiled broadly on arriving at court for her bond hearing, Daily Mail's exclusive photos show. But as Sarah Grace Patrick sat in the courtroom, the reality of being able to go home with her supportive family that came to show their support appeared to have set in, as she promptly burst into tears. The angel-faced teen was seen for the first time since her arrest on July 9, and was snapped arriving at the Carroll County superior courthouse after getting out of a police cruiser at 8am, wearing a neon green prison-issued jumpsuit with her wrists in chains. The teenager, her hair pulled back in a tidy braid, smiled and laughed with another young inmate in an orange jumpsuit, clutching a yellow folder as they waited to be called into the courtroom. But the lightness vanished as she took her seat beside public defender Latoya Williams, her expression crumbling as the judge prepared to rule on whether she'd be released on bond to the care of her family, who sat just feet away. Patrick was arrested last month and charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault back in July after her mother, Kristin Brock, 41, and stepfather, James Brock, 45, were found with multiple gunshot wounds inside their home in Carrollton, 45 miles west of Atlanta, Georgia, on February 20. In the months before her arrest – which cops said was sparked by 'a mountain' of digital and physical evidence - the high school graduate curated a chilling portrait of grief on social media and even contacted TikTok true crime creators for help in 'solving' her parents' brutal murder. Although Patrick has yet to enter a formal plea in court, she is understood to deny the charges and has protested her innocence through her family members and her lawyer. Since she turned herself in on July 9, her biological father, Doniel 'DJ' Patrick, has been a steadfast supporter of her innocence - visiting her in jail on July 13 and attending the bond hearing alongside her girlfriend, Katie, and her maternal grandfather, Dennis Nolan Her biological father, Doniel 'DJ' Patrick, has staunchly defended his daughter on social media, insisting she did not commit the brutal killings, with his girlfriend, Katie, exclusively telling Daily Mail: 'Sarah Grace maintains her innocence, we believe her'. Exclusive Daily Mail photos previously captured Doniel and Katie visiting Patrick in jail, shortly after attending a Sunday church service at the Catalyst church, where the Brocks had also been members. An emotional DJ, girlfriend Katie and Patrick's other supporters were seen arriving at court this morning wearing grey t-shirts emblazoned with the message 'I stand with Sarah Grace'. Amid a packed courtroom, filled with press and loved ones of the victims and Patrick, some of Patrick's supporters were directed by deputies to sit outside. Friends and family of the Brocks and Patrick were seen arriving at court, including Patrick's maternal grandfather, Dennis Nolan, who has repeatedly protested his granddaughter's innocence. It comes as Daily Mail obtained text messages purportedly sent by Patrick from jail to family friend Carrie Jenson, who shared them with a supporters' Facebook group. In an apparent screenshot of one message, Patrick thanked her loved ones, saying: '…If I could say anything, I'd say I'm beyond grateful [sic] for the support and prayers and for y'all giving me a voice, it means more than anyone could imagine (sic).' In another message to Jenson, she wrote, 'Yes maam and it was good news yesterday. I love yall and im so beyond proud of you and miss you guys so dang much.' Daily Mail obtained text messages allegedly sent by Patrick from jail to family friend Carrie Jenson, later shared in a supporters' Facebook group, in which she expressed gratitude for the support, shared positive news and conveyed how much she missed her loved ones Patrick was arrested last month and charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault stemming from the February 20 shooting deaths of her mother, Kristin Brock, 41, and stepfather, James Brock, 45, who were found with multiple gunshot wounds inside their home in Carrollton, about 45 miles west of Atlanta, Georgia. In the months after the killings, Patrick had posted numerous TikToks about the murders and shared selfies of herself mourning her parents, including one on her way to their funeral and another of her crying into her mother's clothing During her childhood, Patrick was caught in a bitter custody battle between her father, DJ, and her mother, who was allegedly struggling with drug use at the time, and even wrote a letter to the court pleading to live with her dad Daily Mail previously exclusively revealed the often chaotic childhood of Patrick, during which her biological father accused her mother and stepfather of abusing drugs and being 'unsafe' to care for her as part of a bitter custody battle. Authorities have not yet revealed a motive, but the late couple's loved ones have hit out at 'victim-blaming' and denied their pasts had anything to do with their murders. But court documents unearthed by Daily Mail provided an insight into the accused teen's often chaotic childhood, which appears to have been blighted by her mom and stepfather's alleged drug use. In 2018, Doniel Patrick filed for divorce from his wife, Kristin Nolan Patrick, after a 10-year marriage during which they had Sarah Grace and her younger brother, Donnie, 12, while living in Acworth, Georgia. In court papers, Doniel, 43, demanded joint legal custody of the kids with 'primary physical custody of the parties' minor child' and that any visits between his estranged wife and the children be supervised until she could prove she was clean and sober. Under their July 2018 divorce order, the pair agreed on joint legal custody of the children, with primary physical custody given to the mother, and the father seeing them on alternate weekends and holidays. Police say Kristin and James Brock were both shot dead as they slept in their home in Carrollton. Patrick, who was 16 at the time, was inside the house during the killings and called 911 after her then-five-year-old half-sister Jaley discovered the lifeless bodies. There were no immediate suspects or leads, and the couple's death at first seemed like a mysterious tragedy that had left two young girls without a family. For months, Patrick played the grieving daughter who was coping with an unimaginable loss, delivering a tearful eulogy at the funeral and sharing heartbreaking TikTok videos about her slain parents.
