Death of Bedford High grad under investigation
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI — Bedford Public Schools Superintendent Carl Shultz set up a GoFundMe page for the family of Gwendolyn Smith, a Bedford High School 2025 graduate who died Saturday, June 14. "Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough is reporting a death investigation in Bedford Monroe County Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau is currently on scene investigating a death investigation in the 1600 block of W Sterns Road. There is no threat to the community. More information will be released at a later time," the sheriff's office said in a Sunday, June 15 news release. Goodnough said Monday, June 16, the case remains under investigation. He said an autopsy needs to be completed before a cause and manner of death can be released. "Gwen was an extraordinary young woman whose presence left an indelible mark on our school community," Shultz said in a Sunday announcement to the Bedford school community. As of Monday, June 16, $11,600 have been raised to support the family. UPDATE: Investigation underway in 2 Bedford Twp. deaths
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI — The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has provided an update on the investigation into two deaths that occurred in Bedford Township on Saturday, June 14. Gwendolyn Smith, 17, and Ryne Leist, 33, both of Temperance, were found dead in a residence in the 1600 block of West Sterns Road. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau is still investigating the circumstances leading to their deaths. The autopsy occurred today, but they are still awaiting the results on the cause of death from the Lucas County Coroner's office, according to the sheriff's office. More: Death of Bedford High grad under investigation "Sheriff detectives are working diligently to conduct a complete investigation into this tragic incident; weask for the communities' patience as this investigation continues," the sheriff's office said in a Monday, June 16 release. The release stated there is no threat to the community at this time. A GoFundMe page has been set up for Smith's family.
