Police suspect cannabis farm caused fire to homes in Leicester
Cannabis was found after a fire damaged four houses on a street in Leicester.Emergency services were called after a fire broke out across the roof space of four houses in Stuart Street, Westcotes, at about 12:30 BST on Tuesday.Narborough Road was closed for around five hours while 18 firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.Crews left the scene at about 09:00 on Wednesday, with Leicestershire Police now investigating.
The fire service said an aerial ladder platform was deployed to reach unsafe areas and said it was supported by police, the ambulance service, Leicester City Council and the Red Cross to resolve the incident and to assist affected residents.
The police said the fire has left four houses with "extensive damage" but no injuries were reported and all properties were safely evacuated.A police spokesperson said: "From initial inquiries carried out, the fire is suspected to have resulted after cannabis was being cultivated in the loft space of one of the properties."The force added that a cordon remains in place around the scene and there have been no arrests.

The British musician, who is fighting allegations he raped and choked a woman after a gig, has been hit with two more charges, as his trial date is set. The entertainer has also denied impeding the woman's normal breathing or circulation by applying pressure to her neck. He is now facing two additional counts of sexual penetration without consent, although no plea has been entered. The additional charges were briefly mentioned in court but not explained and his lawyer declined to discuss the change outside court. The London rapper, who has 1.8 million YouTube subscribers and millions of Instagram and TikTok followers, will face a 10-day trial on April 20, 2026. He was arrested in Brisbane and extradited to Perth in October. Filly is among the legions of 'content creators' who have made a name for themselves by amassing huge followings online and made money from video ad revenue and brand collaborations. Born in Colombia, he moved to the UK at the age of two with his single mother and two siblings. After leaving school and trying his hand at working as a broker, he began posting comedy skits online himself and with collaborators and began a music career in 2017. This lead to TV presenting jobs, including BBC's Hot Property, which he hosted in 2018. Barrientos was previously fined and banned from driving for six months after he pleaded guilty to reckless driving in November, while on bail.

Man dead after worksite trench collapse in Melbourne
A man has died after becoming trapped when a trench collapsed on a worksite. Emergency services were called to the site on Quinns Road in Kilmore, 65km north of Melbourne about 11.30am on Friday. Victoria Police confirmed a man died at the scene, but did not release further details. A report will be prepared for the coroner and WorkSafe officials will investigate the incident. More to come.

Families of Nottingham attack victims to hold memorial walk two years on
The families of the Nottingham attack victims will hold a memorial walk to remember their loved ones two years after their deaths. The relatives of 19-year-old students Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber and 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates will meet at St Paul's Church in Lenton Road at 11.30am on Friday before walking to the two locations of the attacks. They say this is 'to show respect for the horror that their loved ones endured at the hands of this monster', to 'wish them peace for wherever they may now be' and 'mark the importance of their fight for justice'. Mr Webber's mother Emma Webber said: 'We will lay flowers, with our love and memories of three wonderful human beings.' The walk, which is set to last 90 minutes, is open to the public and participants will wear green and gold for the University of Nottingham, where Ms O'Malley-Kumar and Mr Webber were studying, and red for Mr Coates's beloved Nottingham Forest. Valdo Calocane, who had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, killed them and attempted to kill three more people in Nottingham on June 13 2023. He was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order in January 2024 after admitting manslaughter by diminished responsibility and attempted murder. A February report into the care received by Calocane said he was not forced to have long-lasting antipsychotic medication because he did not like needles, and other patients at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust also went on to commit 'extremely serious' acts of violence. Prosecutors, police and medical professionals will be scrutinised in a two-year inquiry, including the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Sharon Miller and Wayne Birkett, survivors of the attacks, said in a statement that a 'collective, united effort' is needed to improve the effectiveness of local public services and prevent future tragedies. Their statement read: 'On this two-year anniversary, we remember those we lost and look to the future with hope – hope that lessons will be learned and meaningful change and action will follow. 'We are grateful to the bereaved families for inviting us to the memorial walk they have so thoughtfully arranged.'
