I Tried On 24 Wedding-Guest Dresses. Here Are My 9 Favorites.
Aritzia Made of bias-cut satin, this midi dress drapes beautifully over curves. Its sultry side slit makes movement easy and looks great in photos. However, the thin fabric requires the proper undergarments. My first stop was a three-story Aritzia store, where I hoped to find some fun, trendy options. My style tends toward silhouettes with a defined waist, so dresses that look particularly straight on the hanger rarely accompany me to the dressing room. The Aritzia Fonda Satin Dress was an exception: Its bias-cut satin gracefully spiraled around my body instead of hanging like a curtain. Nicola Fumo/NYT Wirecutter It has a curve-friendly cut. With no waist definition, straight-hanging styles like this dress can be tricky to wear, tugging at the widest part of the body, such as the bust or hips. In contrast, the Fonda's fabric is cut on the bias, so it drapes elegantly over any lumps and bumps. The polyester satin felt slippery and cool against my skin, but the material was thin and failed to disguise creases and lines from my undergarments (I suggest a smoothing bodysuit or slip underneath). You can move in it. This dress's side slit makes it easier to move around in than classic long slip styles. And when it's time to pose for the wedding photographer, you can extend your leg a bit through the slit for a nearly foolproof flattering shot. Sunglasses on for the full effect. Nicola Fumo and Aubrey Patti/NYT Wirecutter It's easy to care for at home. It won't be hard to get a strong ROI from this classic style: Its timeless silhouette makes it a blank slate for styling season after season, year after year. Its polyester material isn't the most luxe but has the upside of being machine-washable and encouraging multiple wears. Key specs Material: 100% polyester 100% polyester Sizes: 2XS to XL (runs slightly large) 2XS to XL (runs slightly large) Colors: four four Variants: leopard print leopard print Great for: semiformal weddings More from Aritzia to consider: Reformation This floral style is appropriate for a semiformal afternoon event. Its hourglass-enhancing silhouette has shapely seams and pleats at the hip, but it runs small, and the non-stretch fabric isn't great for larger chests. The pretty floral print of the Reformation Anelis Dress quickly caught my eye. I was charmed by its 1950s feel, replete with princess seams and a high bateau neckline. And it's made from a drapey, lightweight fabric with a slightly crinkled texture. The fabric drapes well. Nicola Fumo and Aubrey Patti/NYT Wirecutter It's softly structured. Front seams and side pleats that are tufted by a bit of tulle enhance the body's shape by following its natural curves. It isn't too revealing. This dress falls between the calf and the ankle, depending on your height, and it has a high neckline, so it's a great option if you prefer more covered-up styles. It runs small. I always go one, sometimes two, sizes up at Reformation. I tried this dress in a 12, the largest size it comes in, and it was tight; my 38C chest was a bit compressed in the non-stretch fabric, and the waist was snug. I recommend this style for those with sizes of B cup and below. Key specs Material: 100% viscose 100% viscose Sizes: 0 to 12 (we recommend sizing up) 0 to 12 (we recommend sizing up) Colors: three three Great for: semiformal weddings Cos Throw on this casual maxi for outdoor events such as beachfront weddings — its crisp material is breathable in the heat. The adjustable straps also allow you to tweak the fit, creating more or less plunge. Simple and breathable, the Cos Gathered V-Neck Maxi Dress is well suited for laid-back outdoor weddings. The lightweight fabric has enough structure to keep it from clinging or quickly wrinkling, and the adjustable straps tie elegantly at the back and accommodate many heights. Nicola Fumo/NYT Wirecutter It's outdoor-friendly. This long sundress has a breezy silhouette that won't stifle you in the heat and a back slit to keep air flowing. It's made from a crisp, cotton-blend fabric that felt cool on my skin. The chocolate brown color I tried is dark enough that it wouldn't show sweat marks that could pool up from sitting, but I also found the bright blue version stunning in person. The fit is customizable. The straps tie together in the back, so you can easily adjust the dress's ruched neckline for more or less plunge. Key specs Material: 71% cotton, 25% polyamide, 4% elastane 71% cotton, 25% polyamide, 4% elastane Sizes: 2 to 14 (fits true to size) 2 to 14 (fits true to size) Colors: two two Great for: casual weddings Cos Side ties add definition at the waist of this otherwise straight linen maxi that's cut on the bias for extra movement and drape. And it's lined in cotton for cling-free breathability. The Cos Bias Cut Linen Blend Midi Dress, a sleeveless, crewneck sheath, looked blah on the hanger (and on the website), but the rich chocolate brown version I tried looked so pretty that it wound up being one of my personal favorites. I found my usual size, 8, to be a little loose around the bust and armholes. Nicola Fumo/NYT Wirecutter It ties in the back (or the front). Fabric ties on either side at the waist allow you to create more or less cinch. Cos, on its website, shows the dress styled with the ties in the back, which gives the front a clean look, but I liked how it looked tied in front, too. You can wear it all summer. This dress is a blank slate that easily slots into a weekly wardrobe. For work, wear it with flats and a thin cardigan. On the weekend, throw it on with slide sandals and a sun hat. And on vacation, add a piece of statement jewelry and fun shoes. It's made from linen, but it also resists wrinkles. The dress is made from a lyocell and linen blend, so the fabric is breathable but also smooth; unlike with 100% linen garments, the lyocell helps it resist creases and folds. The cotton lining keeps air flowing. Key specs Material: 80% lyocell, 20% linen (100% cotton lining) 80% lyocell, 20% linen (100% cotton lining) Sizes: 2 to 14, petite 2 to petite 12 2 to 14, petite 2 to petite 12 Colors: two two Great for: casual weddings More from Cos to consider: Reformation Made from substantial satin with a little stretch, this sultry gown snatches, smooths, and supports. It comes in sizes from petite to plus, but only in yellow. I spotted the Reformation Britney Satin Dress, part of the brand's second collaboration with influencer Devon Lee Carlson, on Instagram a few days before seeing it on the rack in the store. I love the flirty scalloped edge of this satin maxi's bra-like neckline, and when I turned it around and saw the corset-style back, I had to try it. This is probably the most structured, supportive dress I was able to find at this price. Nicola Fumo/NYT Wirecutter It provides enough support for you to skip a bra. The Britney dress has underwire support and wide-set adjustable straps similar to those of a balconette bra, built right in. Its corset-like lace-up back adds extra support that you can tighten or loosen as needed. It comes in petite and plus sizes. I'm 5-foot-3, so this dress was too long for me even when I wore short heels; it does come in petite sizes as well, however. Reformation also offers this dress in sizes 14 through 24. This dress has adjustable straps and a lace-up back to adjust the fit. Nicola Fumo and Aubrey Patti/NYT Wirecutter Key specs Material: 100% polyester 100% polyester Sizes: 0 to 12, 14 to 24, 0P to 12P (we recommend sizing up) 0 to 12, 14 to 24, 0P to 12P (we recommend sizing up) Colors: two two Great for: formal weddings More from Reformation to consider: Staud This elegant, square-necked style has a paneled construction that gives it a corset effect, contouring the waist and lifting the chest. Plus, it comes in 10 colors and in sizes 00 through 16. We recommend Staud's Wells Dress in our guide to the best little black dresses, but it also comes in lots of colors and prints, as well as a few style variations. I tried on the sleeveless and short-sleeved versions of the midi length (you can also get it as a mini) and instantly loved how the seaming cinched my waist and lifted my chest. Take your pick of 10 different colors, multiple lengths, and sleeves or no sleeves. Nicola Fumo and Aubrey Patti/NYT Wirecutter It gives instant hourglass. The paneled bodice of this dress pulls the waist in and pushes the bosom up in a way that truly wowed me in the fitting room. The poplin-blend fabric has 5% stretch, so it's compressive but comfortable. There's a style for everyone. This dress comes in 10 colors, including the blue and white toile print I tried, a few options with playful embroidery, and all the neutrals. You can also get it without sleeves in midi and mini lengths. Key specs Material: 95% cotton, 5% spandex 95% cotton, 5% spandex Sizes: 00 to 16 (fits true to size) 00 to 16 (fits true to size) Colors: 10 10 Variants: Wells Dress, Mini Wells Dress Wells Dress, Mini Wells Dress Great for: semiformal weddings Staud This sleek dress's clever ruching gives toga up top and '90s minimalism below. The fabric has a touch of stretch, making it comfy to sit, stand, eat, and dance in. Size up. The Staud Mini Phare Dress is a flirty mini with an off-the-shoulder neckline and clever pleating throughout the bodice. It's made from soft cotton poplin with 2% spandex, which provides just the right amount of stretch for you to move comfortably. Nicola Fumo/NYT Wirecutter The ruched waist shows off curves. I liked how the soft folds of the dress accentuated my waist and added to the goddess vibe of the draped, off-the-shoulder neckline. It's sexy but sophisticated. The Mini Phare highlights legs and shoulders without being overly revealing, so it's a versatile piece you could easily wear for different occasions. And if the legginess is too much for you, it also comes in a midi-length made from silk. It runs small. While a size 10 fit me in the other Staud styles I tried on, I sized up to a 12 to get the right fit in this style. Key specs Material: 98% cotton, 2% spandex 98% cotton, 2% spandex Sizes: 00 to 16 (we recommend sizing up) 00 to 16 (we recommend sizing up) Colors: six six Variants: Phare Silk Dress, Phare Silk Top Phare Silk Dress, Phare Silk Top Great for: casual or semiformal weddings More from Staud to consider: Ellison Dress, $295 Ellen Dress, $345 Ganni An extra-full A-line skirt and playful ruffles make this cotton poplin midi ideal for parties or everyday wear. Its stretchy, shirred back ensures a comfortable fit across busts of different sizes. The silhouette and stunning color of the Ganni Cotton Poplin Strap Dress lends it a party-worthy touch, and its ruffled details at the hem, waist, and neckline add even more fun. Not only would this dress stand out at a casual wedding, but it would also be a fantastic addition to your suitcase for your vacation this season. Nicola Fumo/NYT Wirecutter It's ready to party. Ruffled details and an extra-full skirt add a festive feel to this timeless silhouette. Dressing it up doesn't require much: Just add dressy sandals or flats and a bold accessory such as chunky earrings or a playful bag. The lightweight material is ideal for summer. The smooth cotton poplin is a comfortable choice for daytime affairs under the beating sun. And unlike tighter numbers, it has a generous skirt that allows airflow. It has a stretchy back panel. The back of the bodice has a shirred panel, which helps different bodies (especially those with bigger chests) get a good fit but also creates a more casual look. Key specs Material: 100% cotton 100% cotton Sizes: 2 to 14 (fits true to size) 2 to 14 (fits true to size) Colors: two two Great for: casual weddings More from Ganni to consider: Banana Republic This unlined, matte silk maxi has a face-framing ruffled V neck and a floor-sweeping skirt, making it appropriate for formal affairs. It's available in extended sizes, including petite and tall. $275 from Banana Republic I was happy to find a beautiful, all-silk maxi dress within my budget at Banana Republic. Not only is it rare to find a formal dress at this price, but I always appreciate the brand's extended size range, as well. The Matte Silk Open-Back Maxi Dress is available in sizes 0 through 20, as well as petite sizes (00 through 14) and tall sizes (2 through 16). Unsurprisingly, this dress is popular and low in stock, so if you're considering it, move quickly. See More from Banana Republic to consider below for similar styles in the same matte silk fabric. The neckline draws attention to your face. The V neck, paired with decorative shoulder ruffles, creates a pretty, face-framing look, and the ruffles continue around to decorate the open-back detail. The luxe silk and full length are rare at this price. Dresses that are suitable for formal events are hard to find for under $300, and the 100% silk material makes this find extra impressive. Nicola Fumo/NYT Wirecutter Key specs Material: 100% silk 100% silk Sizes: 0 through 20, petite 00 through 14, tall 2 through 16 (fits true to size) 0 through 20, petite 00 through 14, tall 2 through 16 (fits true to size) Colors: two two Great for: formal weddings More from Banana Republic to consider: From 'black-tie optional' to 'dressy-casual,' interpreting an event's dress code can be confusing. One way to gauge the formality of the event is by the venue: Is the couple getting married on a public beach, say, or the rooftop deck of a members-only club? The time of day can also be an indicator of the wedding's dressiness, with evening celebrations generally being more formal than daytime events. Here are some of the most common dress codes you'll see on an invite: Formal: If your invitation specifies black-tie or formal attire, opt for a full-length dress in a fine fabric, such as silk, satin, organza, or chiffon. Accessorize with heels or dressy flats, along with your best jewelry. Accessorize with heels or dressy flats, along with your best jewelry. Semiformal: For parties that note semiformal attire, including cocktail and dressy-casual, a midi or knee-length dress in a nicer-than-everyday fabric is suitable, as is a jumpsuit or an elegant skirt-and-top combo. Block heels, wedges, or fancy flats are great shoe options, and you can have fun with costume jewelry and playful bags. Casual: For casual events, a sundress made of cotton or linen is a great choice. Because you might choose an outfit you already wear frequently, take a little extra care to steam your dress to eliminate any wrinkles (you can hang it in the bathroom while you shower), and give your shoes a buff or a quick wipe with a damp cloth to remove any scuffs. I've been a fashion writer for over a decade, and I have hands-on experience designing, patterning, and sewing clothing. I have degrees in fabric styling and fashion merchandising from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where I interned at both mass retailers and designer houses during my time at school. For this shopping diary, I tried on dozens of dresses with silhouettes and fabric that would work for guests attending a summer wedding. I focused on brands that had nationwide availability, and I aimed for options that were available in wider size ranges. I also sought dresses with interesting details that elevated their look. Versatility was also a factor: None of these dresses are cheap, and I wanted to recommend dresses that would double as wardrobe workhorses once the dance floor cleared. Since fabric and fit can look much different in real-life conditions than on a company's website, I captured photos and videos as I shopped. In the end, I found nine dresses that I recommend for guests going to an upcoming wedding, with ideas for casual, semiformal, and formal occasions. The Definitive Beach Accessories List for Elevated Summer Style
When I'm prepping for a beach day, I'm always on the hunt for ways to elevate my vacation style. Maybe it's an oversized, dramatic sun hat that shades my entire face and makes me feel like I belong on the cast of The White Lotus . Or perhaps it's a shell-adorned anklet and a breezy, earth-toned cover-up that makes me feel as though I truly belong on the coast. When it comes to beach accessories, a few wise choices go a long way. For footwear, opt for a platform sandal that keeps your feet off the scorching sand or a waterproof flip-flop you won't stress about getting wet in the waves. When it comes to bags, look for options that shake out sand easily and have enough room for all your essentials, including sunscreen, a good book, and perhaps a chilled water bottle. If you're popping down to the beach club or restaurant from your hotel, a mini raffia bucket bag paired with delicate leather sandals will do just the trick. Of course, you can't forget your hair accessories! A sturdy claw clip or two will help keep your locks in place while you swim or lounge. As for those last-minute extras, pack a portable fan (or a classic accordion fan), a lip balm packed with SPF, and a compact brush or comb to tame any post-swim tangles. Finally, try wearing shells, pearls, and sculptural gold pieces to bring an elegant, polished touch to any beach ensemble. Style them with an airy crochet layer and a pair of statement sunglasses, and you've got a shoreline look worth remembering. Looking for this season's chicest accessories for your next vacation? Scroll on to discover beach-day heroes you'll swear by. Stylish, Practical Beach Bags Courtesy of Aritzia A chic tote can elevate your beach look in an instant. Choose a designer style with a discreet logo for a refined touch, or opt for a netted design that allows your swimwear to dry easily while keeping sand at bay. Iconic Sun Hats Courtesy of Lack of Color Whether you're drawn to bold statement style or a charming bucket hat, sun protection is a non-negotiable. Beach hats offer the perfect opportunity to have fun with your look—I'm partial to a raffia cowboy hat for some Western flair, or a wide-brimmed, floppy style that makes me feel effortlessly glamorous while lounging with a good book. Chic Cover-Ups and Sarongs Courtesy of Monday Swimwear With endless options and serious versatility, pareos and sarongs are some of the easiest ways to elevate a minimalist swimsuit. Opt for a long style that can double as a halter top paired with your favorite linen pants, or choose a shorter version for hotter days when heading to the beach club for a frozen cocktail. Sleek Sunglasses courtesy of Simon Miller I love packing a variety of sunglasses—there are so many colors and styles, it's nearly impossible to choose just one! I tend to gravitate toward bold, playful frames with real UV protection for time spent under the sun, but I always include a minimalist pair for moments when I want the rest of my look to take center stage. Courtesy of Margaux I love styling a unique platform sandal with my resort-ready looks—it effortlessly pulls the whole vacation look together. Whether you're drawn to a chic raffia slide or a practical flip-flop from beloved brands like Ipanema and Havaianas, these styles are beach-day perfection. Dazzling Coastal Jewelry Courtesy of Jennifer Behr Shells and pearls are my go-to choices for vacation jewelry, and Jennifer Behr's standout pieces transition seamlessly from beachwear to elegant evening looks. Vacation is the perfect time to layer boldly, so don't be afraid to mix metals, pendants, and charms. Beach Bag Must-Haves There have been many times I arrived at the beach and thought, 'Wow, I could really use an SPF lip balm and a fan.' It's always the little things you don't realize you need until you actually need them. I make it a point to pack a plush beach towel, a sturdy hair clip, a mini pouch for jewelry or cosmetics, and Neutrogena's rehydrating spray—my go-to savior on sweltering days.
