Cardinals' Brendan Donovan scratched from lineup versus Yankees due to foot soreness
ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals All-Star Brendan Donovan was scratched from Friday's game against the New York Yankees with left foot soreness. Donovan had been scheduled to bat leadoff and play second base. Donovan has been dealing with leg and foot injuries since missing four games after being removed from a game against Toronto on June 10 with a sprained capsule in his left big toe. Donovan was also held out of St. Louis' contests on Aug. 10-11 against the Cubs with left groin soreness. Donovan is batting .279 with nine home runs and 45 RBIs this season, but has hit .234 in 46 games since injuring his toe. St. Louis was already set to play short-handed on Friday as Willson Contreras remained out of the lineup for a second consecutive game with a right foot contusion sustained when he was hit by a pitch from Colorado's Kyle Freeland on Tuesday night. Place Stadium. How much he'll play remains a question, Sorensen admitted, but rest assured the German superstar will play. In other words, the nearly 30,000 fans who will be in attendance at B.C. Place on Sunday won't be disappointed. Their new hero will be there too. Friday afternoon, the Whitecaps announced that the full inventory of tickets they'd made available had been sold out. That means the whole lower bowl. And no, there won't be an opening of the upper bowl. There's a long season yet to be played and the Whitecaps realize they're building an in-demand project. Plus opening up the upper deck isn't just something done with the snap of a finger: B.C. Place needs a couple days advance notice to make it happen for staffing reasons and more. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The team is encouraging fans to arrive at the stadium around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, 2.5 hours ahead of kickoff, if they want to be part of the welcoming ceremony for Muller. A walking, talking content machine, the uber-talented Müller seems to go everywhere with a smile and will surely be quick to connect with his new fans. 'It was time for a new adventure,' he said at his introductory press conference Wednesday. 'But an adventure for me is only interesting when it's about having the chance to go for titles. If you watch the Vancouver Whitecaps this season and also the development over the past years, there is a chance not only this year but also next year. I am looking forward to something new, something fresh.' pjohnston@ Read More Vancouver Whitecaps Vancouver Whitecaps Local News News Vancouver Whitecaps
