Banned cigarettes worth Rs 26 lakh seized in Delhi, 4 arrested
The officials have arrested the passengers identified as Mukeem, Sameer, and two women who revealed that they obtained the cigarette packets from Guwahati and were smuggled from Myanmar.
'Upon inspection, it was found that the seized cigarette packets did not bear the statutory health warnings mandated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India,' Sanjeev Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) said.
The accused were on their way to Delhi from Guwahati when their vehicle was intercepted by the police.
'The accused disclosed that they hired the women from Delhi to pose themselves as family members so that they could not be stopped by any police persons on the way from Guwahati to Delhi,' the officer said.
The police said Mukeem and Sameer are unemployed and hail from Uttar Pradesh. They have also seized the vehicle that belongs to Sameer.
One of the women lives in Delhi with her parents, while the other woman hails from Lucknow and both are known to each other
The seizure was made by a team led by inspectors Mangesh Tyagi and Robin Tyagi under the close supervision of ACP Arvind Kumar, Yadav said.

New Delhi, Aug. 5: The office premises of 12 'bogus' firms allegedly cheating a large number of innocent persons through false crossword puzzle contests were to-day raided by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police in different parts of the city. 'Proprietors' of two such firms, Chander Prakash of Rani Bagh and Sarinder Kumar of Anand Nagar were arrested on charges of cheating, according to a press note issued by the Delhi Police. The modus operandi of these rucketeers was to collect the postal addresses of a large number of people, the press note said. The 'firm' would prepare a complete list of these people with their postal addresses and despatch literature regarding the crossword puzzle contest. For the first second and third prize winners, attractive articles such as motor cycles, tape recorders and transistors were offered as prizes. The puzzle contest would be so simple that anyone would be able to solve it without much mental exercise. Once the contestant despatched his puzzle entry he would fall in the trap of the racketeer. In due course of time the firm would inform all the contestants that they had won the first prize. All the winners were asked to send Rs. 50 as licence fee package and postal charges to enable the firm to despatch transistors to firms. In fact, a very inferior quality locally manufactured transistor would be sent to each one of them by VPP for Rs. 125. Invariably, the contestant would have already shelled out a sum of Rs. 48 to take delivery of the prize. He would thus be cheated by over Rs. 100 as the cost of the transistor will not be more than Rs. 70 to 73.

Newly-wed lecturer ends life alleging abuse by husband in Krishna district
Vijayawada: A 24-year-old woman, identified as Varre Srividya, allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Vuyyuru of Krishna district, following sustained physical and emotional abuse by her husband. A lecturer at a private college and an MSc graduate, Srividya reportedly ended her life late on Sunday, just days ahead of Raksha Bandhan, leaving behind a poignant note that read, "Sorry, I can't tie rakhi this year," addressed to her younger brother. According to the police, Srividya was married to Arun Kumar, a village surveyor from Kalavapamula in Vuyyuru mandal, on April 23. Arun Kumar, along with his parents, has been accused of subjecting Srividya to continuous harassment and dowry-related demands. The couple had been living together in a rented house in Vuyyuru town since their marriage. Police said Srividya's suicide note detailed repeated instances of domestic violence that began soon after the wedding. She accused her husband of physically assaulting her — including pulling her by the hair, banging her head against doors, and verbally humiliating her in the presence of another woman named Sai. However, by the time he arrived, she was found hanging at her residence. Nagaraju alleged that Arun Kumar had been harassing Srividya over financial matters, including pressuring the family to sell their house in Vuyyur and hand over the proceeds. He claimed that Rs 10 lakh in cash and gold worth another Rs 10 lakh had already been given at the time of the marriage. Following the complaint, Vuyyur town police registered a case against Arun Kumar and his parents under relevant sections related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Arun Kumar is currently absconding. The body was shifted to the Government General Hospital under the Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences for post-mortem and later handed over to the family members. Police said a manhunt has been launched to trace the accused and further inquiries are underway.

ED files charges against five in Rs 212 crore Goa land grab case
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Panaji Zonal Office, has filed a Prosecution Complaint (PC) before the Special PMLA Court, Mapusa, Goa, on July 31, 2025. The complaint names Rohan Harmalkar, Alcantro D'Souza, Estevan Elvis D'Souza, Mohammad Suhail and Samir Kalidas case is under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The ED began the investigation based on two FIRs registered by the Goa FIRs cover offences under the Indian Penal Code, including cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The case involves the transfer and sale of properties in Bardez Taluka, North Goa. The ED investigation found that the accused, led by Rohan Harmalkar, used forged documents like wills, inventories, genealogical records and sale deeds to acquire several properties were then sold to third parties as if they were legal. This process is considered money were carried out at places linked to the accused under Section 17(1) of the PMLA. The ED seized documents, digital evidence, and froze bank Harmalkar was arrested on June 3, 2025, under Section 19 of the PMLA and is in judicial custody. The investigation shows he was involved in planning the forgery, preparing fake documents, and receiving money in cash and through ED has identified and attached properties worth over Rs 212.85 crore under the PMLA as of July 28, 2025.
