BJP leader shot dead in Patna, days after businessman Gopal Khemka's murder
The 52-year-old was shot four times by bike-borne attackers in Sheikhpura village under the jurisdiction of Peepra police station, according to a Live Hindustan report. He was rushed to AIIMS Patna by his family, but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
According to officials cited by the Hindi daily, after dinner, Kewat rode his bike to a cabin near his field along the Bihta–Sarmera State Highway-78 to switch off a water pump as irrigation work was underway. It was while he was returning that two bike-borne men started firing.
According to eyewitnesses cited in the Live Hindustan report, the assailants fled the scene after shooting Kewat at close range.
Station House Officer (SHO) RK Pal told the newspaper that 'two criminals on a motorcycle carried out the crime. " He added that police have begun investigating the case.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and the police are scanning CCTV footage from surrounding areas. Officials are also using technical surveillance to identify the suspects.
The second high-profile murder in Patna within a week
According to the report, Surendra Kewat was known locally as a veterinarian and farmer. He lived with his family in Sheikhpura village and was a BJP functionary in the Punpun block. Although he held no formal position in the party, he remained politically active.
This is the second shocking killing in Patna in just over a week. Earlier, businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead outside his home in the city near Gandhi Maidan.
Tejashwi Yadav attacks Bihar government
Former deputy chief minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday questioned chief minister Nitish Kumar and his cabinet over the deteriorating law and order in Patna.
The RJD leader said in a post on 'X', 'And now, a BJP leader shot dead in Patna! What to say, and to whom? Is anyone in the NDA government willing to listen to the truth or admit their mistakes?'
He further intensified the attack on Nitish Kumar, saying, 'Everyone knows about the CM's health, but what are the two useless BJP deputy chief ministers doing? No statement from the corrupt Bhunja-DK party?'

On April 30, 2018, Gupta was appointed J&K deputy chief minister as a part of a cabinet reshuffle but he quit the post 51 days later on June 19 as the BJP pulled out from the alliance with the Mehbooba Mufti-led People's Democratic Party (PDP). On March 19, 2015, Gupta was elected Speaker of the assembly and became the first Bharatiya Janata Party leader to hold the post. He had defeated Raman Bhalla of the Congress to represent Gandhinagar assembly constituency in the 2014 assembly election. Earlier, he was elected mayor of the city of Jammu for a record three consecutive terms, from 2005-10. He served as the chief of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha's Jammu and Kashmir unit from 1993-98 and was the secretary of the Punjab unit of the Vishva Hindu Parishad from 1978-79. A Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member at the age of 13, he was jailed for 13 months during The Emergency.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and his National Conference colleagues on Monday dodged police curbs, sprinted on foot and scaled a fence to pay tributes to July 13 martyrs, a day after all political leaders of Kashmir and cabinet ministers of the NC were not allowed to visit the Mazar-e-Shohada (1931 martyrs' graveyard) in Srinagar's Old City. This is not a tribute, it's a calculated provocation,' J&K BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur said. He said the BJP firmly rejects the designation of July 13 as Martyrs' Day. 'This was not a day of martyrdom, but a day when the seeds of communal hatred were sown in Kashmir. It marked the beginning of a violent, exclusionary narrative that targeted minorities,' he said and accused Omar Abdullah of double standards. 'On one hand, he rolls out the red carpet for tourists to sell peace. On the other hand, he indulges in separatist appeasement and communal glorification. You can't have it both ways,' he said. July 13 was observed as Martyrs' Day by mainstream politicians and separatists in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in memory of the 21 Kashmiris who were killed by the army of Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh during an uprising in 1931 when the region was a princely state. Several leaders had earlier criticised Omar Abdullah for deliberately remaining away from Kashmir on July 13. This time, Omar, who was in Delhi, reached Srinagar on Sunday afternoon.

In Punjab face-off, AAP-BJP fight has a Gujarat angle
