Forum: SMEs can access resources needed to stay resilient and future-ready

Straits Times27-04-2025

We refer to Mr Lock Chee Wee's letter 'Give boost similar to CDC vouchers for SMEs' digital transformation' (April 18).
S mall and medium-sized enterprises are a key engine of our economy and the Government is fully committed to helping SMEs undertake enterprise and workforce transformation to stay competitive and seize new opportunities.
Digital transformation and innovation are important capabilities that companies must develop to thrive for the long term. The Government recently announced a new Enterprise Compute Initiative (ECI) to support companies to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) solutions into their operations and to grow their AI R&D and productisation capabilities.
The ECI provides companies with access to cloud compute credits and training programmes, and a grant for consultancy services to develop and scale AI solutions. This is similar in intent to Mr Lock's suggestion to provide funding for SMEs to boost their digital transformation.
Before this, the Infocomm Media Development Authority had also introduced the SMEs Go Digital programme that includes advisory support through the Chief Technology Officer-as-a-Service platform, while Enterprise Singapore's Productivity Solutions Grant helps businesses adopt digital solutions to improve operational efficiency.
To help companies upgrade their workforce, the Government has also set aside over $400 million for a new Enterprise Workforce Transformation Package, which will be progressively rolled out in 2026.
This package comprises three main features:
- a new SkillsFuture Workforce Development Grant to provide support for activities such as job redesign, capability building and training;
- enhanced funding support for job redesign activities; and
- a fresh $10,000 in credits for eligible businesses under the redesigned SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit to support workforce transformation.
Aside from enterprise and workforce transformation, the Government gives priority to supporting SMEs' efforts to grow and internationalise. SMEs looking to strengthen their business operations and develop innovative products can tap the Enterprise Development Grant. SMEs keen to access overseas markets can apply for the Market Readiness Assistance Grant to defray related expenses.
Access to financing is also key to SMEs' growth. Through the Enterprise Financing Scheme, the Government shares the risk for loans extended by participating financial institutions for businesses' transformation, innovation and expansion.
We would like to assure Mr Lock that we will continually review our programmes to ensure that we can support SMEs with the tools and resources they need to stay resilient and future-ready.

Former DPM Teo Chee Hean to take over as Temasek chairman in Oct, succeeding Lim Boon Heng

Photo: Facebook/Temasek SINGAPORE: Former senior minister Teo Chee Hean will succeed Mr Lim Boon Heng as the fifth chairman of Singapore's investment company, Temasek Holdings, the company announced on Friday (June 6). Mr Teo will first join Temasek's board as deputy chairman on July 1, before taking over as chairman on Oct 9, after the company's third-quarter board meeting this year. Mr Lim served 12 years as chairman during his 13-year tenure as Temasek's board director. Under his leadership, Temasek's net portfolio grew from S$223 billion in 2014 to S$389 billion in 2024. He led the company's global expansion in Europe and the US and its community efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also built strong ties between Temasek, its portfolio companies, workers, and the government. 'In my 13 years at Temasek, I have been privileged to work with a capable, dedicated team unified by a strong sense of purpose and commitment to excellence. I am always inspired by my colleagues' collective conviction that, like generations before us, we must always act today with tomorrow clearly in our minds,' he said. Mr Teo, a former political stalwart, served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2009 to 2019 and later as Senior Minister until he left politics in May 2025. Temasek said Mr Teo's 'wealth of experience and strategic insights will bring valuable perspectives to Temasek as it continues to evolve and grow as a global investment company.' 'In this era of deepening global uncertainty, we must remain clear-minded on critical matters such as international relations, security, and climate change,' Mr Teo said. 'I look forward to working with Temasek's board, management team and members of the wider Temasek family to build on the achievements of Temasek and chart a path for its continued success in the new global environment,' he added. Mr Lim noted that Mr Teo's depth of experience in public service and his seasoned wisdom on both local and global affairs make him the right helmsman for Temasek. 'I am truly pleased that Chee Hean will guide Temasek into its next chapter of growth as a global investor,' he added. /TISG Read also: Warren Buffett to step down as CEO by year-end, hands Berkshire Hathaway reins to Greg Abel

SailGP roars back into action in New York after Rio cancellation

FILE PHOTO: SailGP F50 team Canada competes in front of the Statue of Liberty after the start of the finals race during the SailGP sailboat racing event won by team New Zealand in New York Harbor, New York City, U.S. June 23, 2024. REUTERS/Mike Segar/File Photo NEW YORK - SailGP teams will shake off the rust in New York this weekend, as the global racing championship gets back into action after a wingsail defect forced a brief hiatus with the cancellation of May's Rio event. Organisers identified the defect after the Australian boat's wing collapsed in San Francisco in March and carried out repair and upgrade work to remedy the issue on the F50 fleet in time for the highly anticipated New York competition. "We had almost two months of learning to take from the previous events," said Brazil's twice Olympic champion Martine Grael, SailGP's first-ever female driver. "We have a lot of changes in our sailing - there are almost too many changes and we know you can only handle a few changes at a time. We're focusing to see what we can adapt here." The recently added Brazil team hope to move up the standings from 10th as the action kicks off on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET (1700 GMT), two and a half hours earlier than planned due to inclement weather. The three-times champions Australia, who hold just a one-point advantage over Britain in the standings, want to impress after making headlines off the water, with new A-List co-owners Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds announced this week. The great equaliser between the celebrity-fronted top dogs and the up-and-comers has been the competition's tech-first approach to sailing, with each of the vessels equipped with 125 sensors continuously feeding data. "We give the data to everybody," SailGP's Chief Technology Officer Warren Jones told Reuters. "Top teams hate it, but the newer teams love it." Jones was able to build the robust analytics operation from "a blank sheet of paper" by cherry-picking from billionaire co-founder Larry Ellison's Oracle capabilities. The hope is that the data points broadcast across the competition can help transform the next generation of fans - newcomers and diehards alike. "There are the basics - you need to know how fast people are going because then it adds the jeopardy of what's going on," said Jones. "Then there's people out there who want to know how many tacks they've done and what the tack is compared to the last tack - we can rate that." Musk's xAI expects annual earnings over $13 billion by 2029, Bloomberg reports

Billionaire Elon Musk's xAI expects to generate more than $13 billion in annual earnings by 2029, according to numbers revealed by the artificial intelligence startup's banker Morgan Stanley, Bloomberg News reported. Morgan Stanley, which is seeking investors for a $5 billion debt sale of xAI, opened the AI startup's books to those willing to commit at least $50 million, Bloomberg reported late Thursday, citing people with knowledge of the situation. The development comes as Musk and U.S. President Donald Trump have been involved in a huge public spat that saw threats fly over government contracts and ended with Musk suggesting Trump should be impeached. The impact of their hostilities on the bank's sale of xAI's debt is uncertain, according to Bloomberg News. Morgan Stanley allowed investors to view limited statistics about xAI, including revenue, earnings, cash flow and projections, the report showed. xAI expects $1 billion in gross revenue by the end of this year, and $14 billion by 2029, the report added. Gross revenue during the first quarter stood at $52 million while xAI lost $341 million before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), the report stated. The company projects that EBITDA will be $2.7 billion in 2027 and $13.1 billion in 2029, the report added. Startups in the AI space typically burn through huge amounts of cash, with billions poured into acquiring pricey, advanced data center hardware and attracting top generative AI researchers. XAI plans to spend $18 billion on investments in data centers going forward after spending $2.6 billion on capital expenditures, according to the report. Morgan Stanley and xAI did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Besides Morgan Stanley's $5 billion debt sale, xAI is also seeking a valuation of $113 billion in a share sale worth $300 million, according to media reports earlier this week.
