ABBA's Björn gives sad update on ABBA Voyage weeks after show refresh

Daily Mirror13-07-2025
ABBA, which consisted of Björn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson and Agnetha Fältskog, are the inspiration behind the concert residency ABBA Voyage in London
Former ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus has shared an update on the band's virtual concert residency following the third anniversary of its launch earlier this year. He was asked about the future of ABBA Voyage in an interview this week.
It opened at the purpose-built ABBA Arena in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London in 2022. The residency features digital avatars of Björn, 80, and his three former bandmates Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 79, Benny Andersson, 78, and Agnetha Fältskog, 75, alongside a 10-piece live band.

ABBA Voyage, which features songs like Mamma Mia and Dancing Queen, is currently allowing fans to book tickets up to early January next year on its website. Björn was asked about its future in an interview broadcast earlier today.

The singer-songwriter was interviewed this morning by Jane Mulkerrins on Times Radio. Looking ahead to the future, she asked him if the ongoing residency will continue, if it's still going by that point, when a member of ABBA dies.
Björn revealed that he wasn't sure, saying that he "hadn't thought" about that scenario before. He told radio host Jane that he would need to speak to Anni-Frid, known as Frida, Benny and Agnetha to make a decision on the matter.

Responding to the question, he said: "That's a question I've never had before ... I honestly don't know, hadn't thought about that. It's good you raise that question - I'll talk to the others about that as we need to decide beforehand between us if it's okay for all four of us to go on after we're gone."
His comment comes after ABBA Voyage relaunched earlier this year with four songs added to the setlist. The purpose-built stadium closed its door in May, ahead of the third anniversary of its launch, as updates took place for the show.

ABBA, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with their song Waterloo, said that they wanted to add "a little something" to the concert for the special occasion. The update saw the Name of the Game, Super Trouper, Money, Money, Money and Take a Chance on Me added to the setlist.
In a joint statement issued at the time, Björn, Frida, Benny and Agnetha said to fans: "When we first opened, we never imagined that we'd still be in London three years on. We're very grateful that so many of you have joined us."

They added: "Of course, the reason for us being able to sustain our concert for so long is because of our incredible audience. As we say in Sweden … Vilken resa! (what a journey in English)."
The former bandmates concluded by revealing that the new version of the show would launch in late May. They said: "So, to celebrate we'll be adding a little something to our concert from the 27th of May to thank you for your love and support. We hope you enjoy it!"

Saving money, money, money: Abba Voyage chiefs replace experienced band with cheaper musicians to cut costs

It is the lucrative show that allows Abba fans to experience a concert from the group as they were in their prime – or rather, through digital 'Abbatars' and a glittering ten-piece band. But despite having raked in £300 million in ticket sales, The Mail on Sunday has discovered that the producers of Abba Voyage are cutting costs. They have replaced the live band – which accompanies the four singing avatars of Abba – with cheaper musicians. The show has attracted more than 2.5 million visitors since it opened in 2022 at the Abba Arena in London 's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and it has contributed £1.5 billion to the economy. The original line-up of musicians – to accompany the avatars of Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad – was put together by former Klaxons singer James Righton, husband of Keira Knightley. He scoured the globe for a band that could bring the group's hits to life, hiring the likes of singer-songwriter Victoria Hesketh, known as Little Boots, on the keyboard. 'The [band was] always brilliant and had amazing players,' Righton told NME magazine at the time. 'This band had to step up to being as good as the original line-up.' However, neither Righton nor any of the musicians who worked with Abba members Benny and Bjorn in Stockholm to bring the extravaganza to life still work at the 3,000-capacity arena. 'Now it is a huge success with sell-out audiences, the bosses have begun cost-cutting and have even replaced the band with cheaper musicians,' one worker said. 'If something as successful and lucrative as Abba Voyage is cutting corners, there is not much hope for the rest of the industry.' Last month auditions took place for new performers after an open call for 'a full-time contract with our live band at the Abba Arena'. The advert said: 'We are searching for professional guitar, bass, keyboard, saxophone, drums and percussion players, as well as female-identifying singers of the highest quality. Ability to read sheet music is a bonus.' Workers fear that the quality of the show will be compromised when the new musicians take over in December. Abba Voyage, a 95-minute run-through of 20 of the band's greatest hits, took five years and an estimated £15 million to make. One of the most iconic moments in the show is when the four avatars are silhouetted against vintage footage of Abba winning the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton in 1974. Originally billed as a temporary structure, the Abba Voyage venue is not slated to be earmarked for housing redevelopment until 2029. Abba were approached for comment.

Anthony Worrall Thompson says it's 'time to move on' from 'irrelevant' MasterChef scandal

Celebrity chef and I'm A Celebrity alumni Anthony Worrall Thompson has said it's time for "the youngsters" to make their way on to MasterChef, slamming the uproar over its co-hosts as 'irrelevant' Celebrity chef Anthony Worrall Thompson has said cookery show MasterChef needs to "move on" from former hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace. The 74-year-old, who has appeared on the programme over the years - as well as plenty of other cookery shows - claims it's time for "the youngsters" to take their place. ‌ The two long-standing hosts of MasterChef have both left the show over the last year, with both Wallace and Torode accused of behaving inappropriately over the course of their career. Wallace was axed from MasterChef after an independent investigation upheld 45 of 83 complaints against him, made by 41 individuals. ‌ One upheld allegation goes back 15 years and involves Wallace touching a woman at a party. He admits to putting his hand on her bottom, but maintains that he thought the moment was consensual. ‌ According to him, the woman had shared personal details about herself and shared her phone number with him. He says he saw this as a sign of mutual interest. But now Anthony, who appeared on the second series of ITV's I'm A Celebrity in 2003, says the row is "irrelevant". Speaking to Kait Borsay on Times Radio, he said: "These commissioning editors would have made their minds up months ago about what programs they were going to commission. ‌ "So I think the Gregg Wallace thing is irrelevant. It's a shame for MasterChef, you know, John Torode, Gregg Wallace. "They were sort of part of the sort of furniture if you want, but it's time to move on, you know, we all have to let the youngsters come through. Unfortunately, the commissioners don't seem to be able to find the youngsters to replace us." ‌ When asked about chef's egos in the TV industry, he admitted that TV runners should be treated with respect. Anthony explained: "We all try and keep it down, or some of us do anyway. I mean, I've always worked with a great team of producers, great team of directors, you know, that the TV crew were fantastic. "And the ones you have to look after on TV shows are the runners, you know, the people who are doing the cooking in the back, you know, making sure everything's nice and perfect. If you abuse those people, you know, you're going to suffer down the line, you know, because those runners one day will be directors and they will have long memories." Wallace, 60, insists that, even in the official report, it was acknowledged that he viewed the interaction as consensual. Another upheld allegations relates to an incident from 18 years ago, when Wallace briefly emerged from his dressing room wearing only a sock over his genitals, an incident he says was a joke. ‌ Meanwhile, his former co-star Torode, who hosted MasterChef for nearly 20 years, admitted recently that he was alleged to have used racist language after an investigation into Wallace. Torode claimed he did not recall making the comment and denies it ever happened, insisting he is taking legal action. Earlier this month, the BBC confirmed Torode's contract will not be renewed, saying: "The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed.'
