Westmoreland County man wants to turn Steelers-themed hot rod into money for hospital
With the power of the original Steel Curtain, Shawn Smith's Rengage Rat Rod rocks the road.
"It's a 1928 Ford Model A, with a 1953 Chevy pickup truck cab that has been chopped and narrowed," says Smith, of Ruffs Dale.
The car is a rolling homage to his favorite team. Smith says if it has anything to do with the Steelers, it very well might be on his car.
"It's got Steelers' rings on it, Steeler paint, Steelers' decals, Steelers' flags," says Smith. "It's just something that I thought would get people's attention."
The story of the car, Smith says, started a few years back with only one goal.
"I told them the day I bought it that I wanted to donate this car to the children's hospital."
Smith's granddaughter, Molly, came into the world with the odds stacked against her. Smith says she has special needs, but the medical miracle workers at UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh were in her corner.
"She struggled for five weeks," says Smith. "I didn't think she was coming home. She's going to be 9 and doing well."
Smith says he wants to turn the car into a fundraiser for the hospital, but he's not sure how. However, he says time is of the essence.
"My time is limited right now," Smith said. "Thirteen months ago, I found out I had tonsil cancer. They gave me a year to a year and a half to live.
"I'd like to do something for other people, pass things on. I love kids and I think, without them, where would we be?"

Baltimore celebrates 10 years of Motor House, a beloved creative hub
Baltimore Arts Realty Corporation (BARC) is celebrating 10 years of one of the city's most beloved creative hubs, Motor House. The two-day event spotlights emerging designers, local artists and creativity. This celebration comes almost two months after a car crashed through its building, causing the creative hub to close for a few days. Organizers told WJZ that overcoming the obstacle is what makes this anniversary event more special. "The Motor House has been able to really get our community to rally around," said Jessica Smith, managing director of Motor House. "What are the possibilities of what this space can be— and in 10 years, this is the time when you start to reimagine what else do we want to add." "So actually, sometimes an interesting situation can actually be something that helps bring everybody together," she added. "That was our number one priority, was not getting the doors back open, because we don't have a door anymore, but you know, making sure that we were open and ready for business for you," said Toni Martin, the program director for BARC. During the event, artists showcased their work through runway shows, hands-on workshops, artist-led lectures, and community programming, highlighting Baltimore's bold creative spirit. On Saturday, the celebration continued with an upcycling workshop led by sustainable fashion designers, wearable artists and makers who shared hands-on techniques and creative guidance. Featured creatives included Caprece Ann Jackson, a sustainable fashion curator and ambassador, and Evette Monique, a rising designer who has shown at Milan and London fashion weeks. Upcoming events to celebrate Motor House's 10-year anniversary include a VIP reception on October 9, a public celebration on October 10, and a culminating event on November 1, featuring a screening of the full short documentary in the Black Box Theatre at Motor House. The multidisciplinary arts hub in the heart of the Station North Arts and Entertainment District has been a cornerstone of Baltimore's creative community since BARC founded it in 2015. NASCAR adds O'Reilly Auto Parts as new series sponsor, ending Xfinity pact: Sources
NASCAR has reached a multi-year deal with O'Reilly Auto Parts to become the new entitlement sponsor for NASCAR's second-tier series beginning next year, sources familiar with the discussions but not authorized to speak freely have told The Athletic. O'Reilly Auto Parts replaces Xfinity, which has been the entitlement sponsor for the past 11 years but will continue as a premier partner for NASCAR's top-level Cup Series. An announcement is tentatively scheduled for early next week, according to those sources. Advertisement NASCAR and Xfinity announced in February that Xfinity was expanding its role within NASCAR but would not continue as the entitlement sponsor. The change came as the Xfinity Series was entering its first year of a seven-year deal to air races on the CW Network, owned by the Nexstar Media Group. A new relationship between NASCAR and the CW network has been a boon for both sides, with races on the channel consistently delivering more than 1 million viewers and ranking among CW's most-watched programming. The rising popularity of the soon-to-be O'Reilly Auto Parts Series on television, combined with it being a series that touts itself as the place where future stars develop, was a key factor in the new deal, according to the sources. Several team owners recently expressed enthusiasm to The Athletic about the potential deal between NASCAR and O'Reilly, with many citing the fact that the auto parts retailer has long supported NASCAR through race sponsorships and activation across its three national series for years, which should allow O'Reilly to hit the ground running. O'Reilly, which operates more than 6,000 stores, is set to become the fourth company to serve as an entitlement sponsor for NASCAR's second-tier series since its formation in the early 1980s. Before Xfinity, Anheuser-Busch (1982-2007) and Nationwide (2008-14) served as entitlement sponsors. Sports Business Journal first reported the news. Spot the pattern.
