The Raiders most intriguing and pivotal game fo the 2025 season happens very early on
Raider Nation will be eagerly watching this year's team. There's significant optimism with the new coaching staff and front office that the Raiders are in better hands moving forward. And quick results are expected.
There's every reason to believe this team can hit the ground running with head coach Pete Carroll reunited with QB Geno Smith who has several weapons with which to work. The first big test of that will come very early on.
One of the most pivotal litmus tests of the Raiders 2025 season schedule will come in the team's home opener when they host the Chargers at Allegiant. This happens in week two. And it's in primetime on Monday Night Football.
Not only will it be a big test for this team, whether the Raiders come out with a win or not could go a long way as to where they will ultimately stand in a potential playoff chase. But there's an added intrigue to this game that involves their long time rival head coaches as Matt Zemek of Trojans Wire recently pointed out.
What adds to the attractiveness of the matchup is that it reunites Pete Carroll with old enemy Jim Harbaugh. The two went at it when USC played Stanford nearly two decades ago, and then in the NFL when Carroll's Seattle Seahawks battled Harbaugh's San Francisco 49ers for NFC supremacy.
The two head coaches seem to be doing a bit of rivalry stalking. They clearly know each other very well. The question is, which of them has changed up their tendencies enough to be less predictable?
The Chargers are coming off a playoff season in Harbaugh's first year on the job. And they swept the Raiders along the way. Then again, so did the rest of the division. But this is a different team under Carroll. One that is much more confident that their head coach is going to give them the best chance to win, rather than make the wrong decisions in the most critical moments as happened a lot last season under Antonio Pierce.
We can now get back to the more common philosophy that you can throw the records out the window in division rivalry games.
I made my early pick for who wins this matchup in my Raiders game-by-game predictions. And whether the Raiders come out of this one with a win or not could mean the difference between heading into the week eight bye with a winning record or a losing record.
So, yeah, we can all agree that game will be a big one.

Reports: Dan Orlovsky, ESPN agree to terms on new contract

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky has been a mainstay analyst on ESPN's NFL coverage in recent years, and he'll continue to stick around after signing a new deal with the sports media giant. Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported Tuesday that Orlovsky and ESPN came to terms on a new deal. The news comes months after Orlovsky had hinted at an uncertain future with the company. Advertisement In an appearance on ESPN's First Take, the talk show hosted by Stephen A. Smith, at the end of the NFL season, Orlovsky said: "You guys know this is the end of the season for me ... I'm taking a break. Won't be on TV for a long time," he said. ESPN CONTRACT NEWS: Sports media company signs Dick Vitale to multi-year extension "Just wanted to say thank you to you guys – Stephen A. [Smith], Molly [Qerim], Shannon [Sharpe] – for a great season. Love being with you guys and love y'all. "Never know what the future holds, but I'm taking a break ... just want to say thank you. Appreciate you guys so much." Advertisement Orlovsky had appeared on ESPN programming in the time since making those comments, but he was still in negotiating talks with both ESPN and CBS. The latter media company wanted to poach the 41-year-old analyst for their Big Ten football coverage, according to Marchand. Instead, Orlovsky will remain with ESPN for an eighth year – and perhaps more – after initially joining its team of NFL coverage and analysis in 2018. That means he'll continue to appear on ESPN's "NFL Live" show with Mina Kimes, Marcus Spears, Laura Rutledge and others. Orlovsky will also remain a part of the network's second team for "Monday Night Football" broadcasts with Chris Fowler and Louis Riddick Jr. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Dan Orlovsky contract: NFL analyst reaches deal with ESPN, per reports

Ex-Raiders GM reveals fascinating Bo Nix nugget from 2024 NFL draft

Ex-Raiders GM reveals fascinating Bo Nix nugget from 2024 NFL draft The Denver Broncos used the 12th overall pick in last year's NFL draft to select Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, and the team faced criticism for taking him at that spot. The Broncos did not want to trade down and risk losing Nix to another club, including the division rival Las Vegas Raiders, who picked right below them at No. 13. In hindsight, it looks like that was the right decision. In a recent interview on "Check the Mic with Steve Palazzolo & Sam Monson," former Raiders general manager Tom Telesco hinted that Nix would have been in play for Las Vegas had he not gone off the board to Denver. Telesco said the Raiders had conversations about Michael Penix, but probably wouldn't have drafted him had the QB fallen to pick No. 13. "Now, looking back, if I knew I only had one year there, maybe that would have been different, I don't know," Telesco said. The ex-GM was then asked about the thought of trading up for a QB. He said they would have traded up for Jayden Daniels if possible, but wouldn't have moved up for the QBs after him. Had somebody like Nix fallen to them, though? "If they were there ... Bo Nix, his background of work, his durability, his movement skills -- that one was interesting, and he's gone to the perfect team. That would have been a good possibility [at pick No. 13]." Nix went 2-0 against the Raiders last season and was invited to the Pro Bowl as an alternate after surpassing 4,200 yards from scrimmage and scoring 34 touchdowns as a rookie. Had the Broncos passed on Nix, he might have ended up with a division rival. So it seems safe to say Denver's front office made the right choice to use pick No. 12 on Nix last year.
