Ex-Raiders GM reveals fascinating Bo Nix nugget from 2024 NFL draft
The Denver Broncos used the 12th overall pick in last year's NFL draft to select Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, and the team faced criticism for taking him at that spot.
The Broncos did not want to trade down and risk losing Nix to another club, including the division rival Las Vegas Raiders, who picked right below them at No. 13. In hindsight, it looks like that was the right decision.
In a recent interview on "Check the Mic with Steve Palazzolo & Sam Monson," former Raiders general manager Tom Telesco hinted that Nix would have been in play for Las Vegas had he not gone off the board to Denver.
Telesco said the Raiders had conversations about Michael Penix, but probably wouldn't have drafted him had the QB fallen to pick No. 13.
"Now, looking back, if I knew I only had one year there, maybe that would have been different, I don't know," Telesco said.
The ex-GM was then asked about the thought of trading up for a QB. He said they would have traded up for Jayden Daniels if possible, but wouldn't have moved up for the QBs after him. Had somebody like Nix fallen to them, though?
"If they were there ... Bo Nix, his background of work, his durability, his movement skills -- that one was interesting, and he's gone to the perfect team. That would have been a good possibility [at pick No. 13]."
Nix went 2-0 against the Raiders last season and was invited to the Pro Bowl as an alternate after surpassing 4,200 yards from scrimmage and scoring 34 touchdowns as a rookie. Had the Broncos passed on Nix, he might have ended up with a division rival. So it seems safe to say Denver's front office made the right choice to use pick No. 12 on Nix last year.

Za'Darius Smith: 'Hopefully,' I'm back with the Detroit Lions
Defensive end Za'Darius Smith remains a free agent, but, in the end, he wants to be back with the team that he went to the playoffs with last season, that being the Detroit Lions — who cut him in March. "Hopefully, I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great," Smith told USA TODAY Sports. "When I'm there, I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully, I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit." Smith split the 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns and Lions, who acquired him at the NFL trade deadline after suffering myriad defensive injuries, including to star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson, a 2023 Pro Bowler. In all, Smith finished the 2024 regular season with a combined nine sacks and 35 combined tackles. Smith ranked 21st among edge defenders in pass-rush grade (76.5), 33rd in overall grade (74.7) and 85th in run-defense grade (62.8) according to Pro Football Focus. Now, should Smith return to Detroit, there are some changes on the coaching side, as the Lions lost defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn — who became the new head coach of the New York Jets — and promoted former linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to the position. They also have a new defensive line coach in Kacy Rodgers, among many other coaching changes. The 32-year-old Smith, who expressed that he's focused on "getting a ring now and winning a championship," thinks he and Hutchinson could be a special duo off the edge. "I'm still a veteran. He's [Hutchinson] still a young guy. I can help him with a lot of things. He's already great, but as a player, there are some tools that I know that I can help him with," Smith said. "And there are some things as a young guy that he can help me with." Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler, spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens (2015-18), followed by a three-year stint with the Green Bay Packers (2019-21), one season with the Minnesota Vikings (2022) and a season-plus with the Browns before being acquired by the Lions during the 2024 season. Elsewhere, Detroit re-signed defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike, defensive end Marcus Davenport and linebacker Ezekiel Turner to one-year deals apiece, while adding defensive tackle Roy Lopez and selecting Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams with the No. 28 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Last season, the Lions went 15-2 and claimed the No. 1 seed in the NFC before losing to the Washington Commanders in the NFC divisional round. Detroit's defense surrendered 244.0 passing yards (30th in the NFL), 98.4 rushing yards (fifth), 342.4 total yards (20th) and 20.1 points (seventh) per game. Seahawks will have nine open training camp practices
The Seahawks have announced their schedule of open training camp practices for this summer. Nine of the team's practices at their facility will be open to the public. The first of those practices will come when the team opens camp on July 23. They will also hold open practices on July 25-26, July 28, July 31, August 1, August 5, August 10, and August 12. They will play their first preseason game against the Raiders on August 7. In addition to those practices at the team's headquarters, the Seahawks will also hold one open session at Lumen Field. Their Football Fest event will take place at 6 p.m. on August 2.

Breece Hall thought he might be traded until Aaron Glenn called him
Breece Hall was on the trade market . . . unless he wasn't. The Jets running back heard the rumors, and until new coach Aaron Glenn called him to quell the speculation, Hall wasn't certain what his future held. 'I mean, I was seeing it just like everybody else was seeing it,' Hall said Wednesday, via video from Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. 'But if people feel like you're not doing your job, you're going to be replaced. It didn't happen. . . . AG called me and told me he wanted me to be here. So, you know, for me, that meant a lot. I'm here. I'm here to work and ready to do my job. I'm proving that I deserve to be here.' General Manager Darren Mougey refuted any trade talk involving Hall during the draft, saying the Jets had not considered dealing Hall. Glenn told Hall the same thing in a phone call. 'At first I was like, 'OK, we'll see what happens,' and then AG called me and told me, he's like, 'Breece, do you think I want to trade you?'' Hall said. 'I was like, 'I don't know.' He was like, 'Breece, I don't want to trade you. I want you to be here. You're going to be our running back.' So, that felt really good.' Hall averaged a career-low 4.2 yards per carry and a career-low 54.8 yards per game in 2024. Even though he played 16 games, Hall revealed he had a 'pretty serious' knee injury. He admits last season 'sucked' in every way as the Jets went 5-12. 'Yeah, it's always frustrating as a team and as an individual when you're not winning games and playing as well as you expect,' Hall said. 'Then, after the season, there's always someone to blame or the blame is put on. A lot of it just so happened to kind of be on me. So, it was like, 'OK, just get back to the drawing board, just get back to working hard.' I know what kind of potential I have, but potential only goes so far. I want to be a product. I want to be able to say that I've done everything I wanted to do.' Hall is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie deal and still looking for his first 1,000-yard rushing season and his first Pro Bowl. Glenn has indicated the team would have a running back by committee, with Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis and Kene Nwangwu also on the depth chart at the position. 'I'm not obligated anything. I've got to go and prove that I am the guy,' Hall said. 'I feel like I am a three-down back. Every day I'm going to prove I'm the best back on this roster and one of the best backs in the league.'
