The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel gave final approval to a rule designed to discourage football players from faking injuries to stop the game clock, the NCAA announced Thursday.
Beginning this season, if medical personnel go onto the field to evaluate a player with an apparent injury after the ball is spotted for the next play, that player's team will be charged a timeout. If the team does not have timeouts remaining, a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty will be assessed.

Feigning injuries, sometimes at the coach's instruction, had become a tactic defenses use to slow down tempo offenses or as a way for an offense to avoid a delay-of-game penalty or get an extra timeout.
The NCAA Football Rules Committee has been concerned about feigned injuries for several years. Before the 2021 season, a framework was put in place that allows a school or conference to request a postgame video review regarding questionable actions involving injuries. If it is determined a player faked an injury to manipulate the rules, the offending team's conference was notified for possible disciplinary action.
A change to overtime timeouts also was approved. Beginning with a third overtime, each team will have one timeout for the duration of the game. Previously, teams were allotted one timeout for each overtime. Beginning in the third overtime, teams alternate running 2-point plays until a winner is decided.
There will be change in verbiage when the decision on a video review is announced. The referee will only say that the call on the field is 'upheld' or 'overturned.' The terms 'confirmed' and 'stands' will not be used.

There also were a couple tweaks to kick and punt formations. No offensive player will be allowed in the direct line of the snap to the potential kicker or within the frame of the snapper on punts for the formation to qualify as a scrimmage kick formation. If a team is not in scrimmage kick formation, it must have five players numbered 50 through 79 on the line of scrimmage. Additionally, if the snapper is on the end of the line by formation, the snapper will lose scrimmage kick protection and the opposition can line a player over the snapper.
If any player on a kickoff-return team makes a 'T' signal with his arms during the kick, the team gives up the right to return the kick and the play will be whistled dead.
No player can call defensive signals that simulate the sound or cadence of the offensive signals. The defensive terms 'move' and 'stem' would be reserved for players on that side of the ball and could not be used by the offense.
After the two-minute timeout in either half, if the defense has 12 or more players on the field and all the players participate in the play, the officials will administer a 5-yard penalty. The offensive team would have the option to reset the game clock back to the time at the start of the play. If the 12th player is attempting to leave the field and has no influence on the play, the defensive team will be penalized 5 yards with no adjustment to the game clock.

Also, coach-to-player communication implemented for the Football Bowl Subdivision last year will be allowed in the Football Championship Subdivision.

(AP Photo/Christophe Ena) PARIS (AP) — That No. 2 seed Coco Gauff reached Thursday's French Open semifinals should surprise no one. Her 361st-ranked opponent for a berth in the title match? That's a whole other story. Gauff made it to the final four at Roland-Garros for the third time, getting past No. 7 Madison Keys 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday in a quarterfinal between two Americans who both have won a major title. Advertisement Next up for 2023 U.S. Open champion Gauff? A matchup against French wild-card entry Loïs Boisson, who extended one of the most stunning runs in tennis history by beating No. 6 Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (6), 6-3. 'Unbelievable,' Boisson said. 'Incredible.' Those are a couple of good words for what's been happening. A year ago, Boisson was supposed to make her Grand Slam debut in Paris, but she tore a knee ligament and couldn't compete. Now 22, Boisson is the first woman to get to the semifinals of her first major tournament since Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati did it at the 1989 French Open and is the lowest-ranked to get that far at Roland-Garros in at least 40 years. Advertisement She's doing it with a game made for clay, anchored by heavy groundstrokes and buoyed by a rowdy, partisan crowd that rattled the 18-year-old Andreeva — she was warned for ball abuse for smacking one toward the upper deck after one bad volley — and was just as loud when Boisson upset No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the fourth round. 'It's impossible to describe,' Boisson said, 'what it feels like to have that kind of support.' Over and over again, the chair umpire tried to tell the 15,000 or so spectators to be quiet as their thunderous applause and shouts of Boisson's first name reverberated off the inside of the closed roof at Court Philippe-Chatrier. They didn't heed those requests. They jeered and whistled when Andreeva complained about noise between her first and second serves or argued line calls. And Boisson hung in there even while facing a set point in the first while down 5-3. Advertisement When the match ended, Boisson collapsed to her back, chest heaving and hands on her face. When she rose, there were flecks of rust-colored clay all over, including her forehead. No matter what happens the rest of the way, Boisson certainly has left her mark on the 2025 French Open. What else happened at the French Open on Wednesday? The men's quarterfinals later in the day were No. 1 Jannik Sinner against unseeded Alexander Bublik, and 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic against No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Who plays at Roland-Garros on Thursday? The two women's semifinals are the only singles matches on the Day 12 schedule, with three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek facing No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in just their second matchup at a Grand Slam tournament, and Gauff meeting Boisson, The men's semifinals are Friday. ___ Howard Fendrich has been the AP's tennis writer since 2002. UEFA monitoring storms which could affect Germany-Portugal semifinal in Nations League

(AP Photo/Martin Meissner) MUNICH (AP) — UEFA says the Nations League semifinal between Germany and Portugal is still scheduled to go ahead Wednesday despite warnings of possible storms in Munich. European soccer's governing body said it 'continues to monitor the meteorological situation closely along with the relevant local authorities' and recommended that fans heading to the game should allow for extra travel time and dress appropriately. Advertisement 'The match is planned to go ahead as scheduled and any updates will be communicated to ticket holders directly,' UEFA said. The German national team's account on X issued a similar warning to fans to allow plenty of time for travel to the stadium and to bring raincoats, ponchos or small umbrellas because of the risk of 'adverse weather conditions.' Germany's national weather service has warned of the risk of storms, high winds and hail late Wednesday in the state of Bavaria, where Munich is the capital. France plays Spain in the other semifinal in Stuttgart on Thursday. ___ AP soccer:

Notre Dame Backfield Ranks Among The Nation's Best Per Lindy's Sports

Notre Dame Backfield Ranks Among The Nation's Best Per Lindy's Sports originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The rushing attack for Notre Dame in 2024 was the strength of the offense, no doubt about it. Many believe that will be the case this upcoming season and it wouldn't surprise me one bit. In 2025, the Irish return one of the best backfields in the country; Lindy's Sports agrees and ranks the Notre Dame backfield the No. 3 returning backfield in college football for this upcoming season. Advertisement Offensive coordinator, Mike Denbrock, returns his four leading rushers from the running back room heading into this season. Junior Jeremiyah Love, redshirt junior Jadarian Price, sophomore Aneyas Williams and redshirt freshman Kedren Young. As a team, the Irish ranked No. 19 in the country in rushing yards per game, No. 3 in the country in rushing touchdowns scored and No. 7 in the country in yards per attempt in 2024. Love and Price burst onto the scene last year, and as we know by know, Love is being considered the best running back in the country ahead of the 2025 season. As a unit, these four backs combined for 338 carries, 2,206 yards, averaged 6.3 yards per carry and tallied 27 touchdowns on the ground. Williams and Love combined for 48 receptions, 409 receiving yards and two touchdowns as well. This was an extremely productive and impactful group a season ago and they're expected to be the same this upcoming season. Obviously, the duo of Love and Price is arguably the best one-two punch in college football, but what sets this room apart from others is their depth. New running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider has a spoil of riches at the running back position and has six players who can all step in and play in big moments. Senior Gi'Bran Payne returned from his ACL injury this spring and is back to 100% while true freshman Nolan James Jr. is an explosive playmaker in the run and pass game. Each back possesses a unique skillset that makes them a lethal unit. Love will see the bulk of the touches this upcoming season, especially with the departure of quarterback Riley Leonard who accounted for 184 carries, 906 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. It's likely Price will continue to rotate in the same fashion he did a season ago. Williams is slated to be their third down running back again; he's their best pass blocker and took over that role midway through his true freshman season. Young, at 5-11 235 pounds, will likely see a lot of short yardage and goal line carries, replacing what Leonard did in those situations. Advertisement With Notre Dame breaking in a new starting quarterback for the fifth year in a row as well as starting their season on the road for the fifth season in a row, the Irish backfield will have to be as dominant as ever to help the inexperienced starter get through the first two quarters of the season. If this backfield can live up to expectations this season, the Notre Dame offense will be hard to stop once again.
