(AP Photo/Butch Dill) ATLANTA (AP) — Trevor Story hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth inning and the Boston Red Sox snapped a five-game skid with a 5-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Atlanta jumped out to a lead in the first on Matt Olson's RBI single. Story and Boston took the lead in the fourth, added a run in the sixth and two more in the ninth on a two-run single by Rafael Devers to send the Braves to their fourth loss in five games. Advertisement Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito allowed one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Five Boston relievers combined to work 4 1/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts and just one hit. Key moment Down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Braves got the potential tying run to first base with two outs. Olson hit a grounder 112.7 mph to Story at shortstop. Story made a diving stop and his throw to first appeared to pull first baseman Abraham Toro off the bag. Toro then threw home, attempting to throw out Luke Williams. But, Toro's throw was errant, allowing Williams to reach home. The Red Sox challenged the call at first base, and the call was overturned. Olson was called out to end the inning and the score remained 3-1. Advertisement Key stat Story entered the game batting .131 (16 for 122) with six RBIs in his last 30 games. He ended a 57 at-bat homerless streak with his fourth inning blast. Up next The Red Sox send RHP Walker Buehler (4-2, 3.95 ERA) against the Braves' RHP Spencer Schwellenbach (3-4, 3.42) in the second game of the series on Saturday. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Butch Dill) ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves are gaining momentum in their attempt to recover from a staggering 0-7 start to the season. A come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings Tuesday night was the latest confidence-building win. Advertisement The Braves scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings before Marcell Ozuna's run-scoring single in the 10th ended the game. 'It just kind of shows the character of this team,' said left-hander Chris Sale, who had 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. 'We were down to our last couple of outs and found a way to do it.' The Braves (17-18) have won three straight and 12 of 17 to close within a win of .500. That's usually not big news for a team that has a streak of seven straight postseason appearances, including the 2021 World Series championship. The woeful start to the season forced manager Brian Snitker's team to focus on the new goal of becoming the first team to make the playoffs after losing its first seven games. Advertisement 'It doesn't get any better than winning a game like that,' Snitker said of Tuesday night's comeback. 'This is a mental game. It can have a great effect on a club.' The streak of three straight wins began with a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night that saved the Braves from being swept in the series. Atlanta then beat Cincinnati 4-0 on Monday night when AJ Smith-Shawver took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. With the score tied at 1 on Tuesday night, the Braves opened the 10th with automatic runner Alex Verdugo on second base. The Reds chose to issue an intentional walk to Austin Riley to face Ozuna, who had no hits in his first four at-bats. Ozuna might have looked even more vulnerable after calling timeout during his at-bat in the eighth because he was experiencing a cramp in his right leg. He was visited by Snitker and an athletic trainer in the batter's box. Advertisement 'I said, 'Hit a two-run homer or get a hit because we're going to run for you,'' Snitker recalled. 'I'm glad we didn't, in retrospect.' The eighth-inning at-bat ended with a long flyball to right field and Ozuna, the designated hitter, remained in the game. When asked if he was motivated by the Reds walking Riley, Ozuna said: 'For sure. I was 0 for 4 and I didn't feel right. Kind of a cramp. I just try to get good contact.' Happy teammates swarmed Ozuna between first and second base after his line-drive single allowed Verdugo to easily score the winning run. 'It feels amazing,' Ozuna said. ___ AP MLB:

Fake injury rule approved. If medical staff tends to player after ball is spotted, timeout charged

FILE - Fans watch during second half of the College Football Playoff national championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame, Jan. 20, 2025, in Atlanta. (AP Photo/Butch Dill, File) The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel gave final approval to a rule designed to discourage football players from faking injuries to stop the game clock, the NCAA announced Thursday. Beginning this season, if medical personnel go onto the field to evaluate a player with an apparent injury after the ball is spotted for the next play, that player's team will be charged a timeout. If the team does not have timeouts remaining, a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty will be assessed. Advertisement Feigning injuries, sometimes at the coach's instruction, had become a tactic defenses use to slow down tempo offenses or as a way for an offense to avoid a delay-of-game penalty or get an extra timeout. The NCAA Football Rules Committee has been concerned about feigned injuries for several years. Before the 2021 season, a framework was put in place that allows a school or conference to request a postgame video review regarding questionable actions involving injuries. If it is determined a player faked an injury to manipulate the rules, the offending team's conference was notified for possible disciplinary action. A change to overtime timeouts also was approved. Beginning with a third overtime, each team will have one timeout for the duration of the game. Previously, teams were allotted one timeout for each overtime. Beginning in the third overtime, teams alternate running 2-point plays until a winner is decided. There will be change in verbiage when the decision on a video review is announced. The referee will only say that the call on the field is 'upheld' or 'overturned.' The terms 'confirmed' and 'stands' will not be used. Advertisement There also were a couple tweaks to kick and punt formations. No offensive player will be allowed in the direct line of the snap to the potential kicker or within the frame of the snapper on punts for the formation to qualify as a scrimmage kick formation. If a team is not in scrimmage kick formation, it must have five players numbered 50 through 79 on the line of scrimmage. Additionally, if the snapper is on the end of the line by formation, the snapper will lose scrimmage kick protection and the opposition can line a player over the snapper. If any player on a kickoff-return team makes a 'T' signal with his arms during the kick, the team gives up the right to return the kick and the play will be whistled dead. No player can call defensive signals that simulate the sound or cadence of the offensive signals. The defensive terms 'move' and 'stem' would be reserved for players on that side of the ball and could not be used by the offense. After the two-minute timeout in either half, if the defense has 12 or more players on the field and all the players participate in the play, the officials will administer a 5-yard penalty. The offensive team would have the option to reset the game clock back to the time at the start of the play. If the 12th player is attempting to leave the field and has no influence on the play, the defensive team will be penalized 5 yards with no adjustment to the game clock. Advertisement Also, coach-to-player communication implemented for the Football Bowl Subdivision last year will be allowed in the Football Championship Subdivision. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert) Olivia Miles is transferring from Notre Dame to finish her college career at TCU. Miles announced her decision on 'NBA on TNT' on Tuesday night and was talking to Candace Parker when she received a box from Shaquille O'Neal with a TCU jersey in it. Advertisement 'Very grateful to be going there, very excited,' she said. The 5-foot-10 guard had spent her entire college career at Notre Dame and was a projected lottery pick in the draft, which takes place in New York on April 14. She decided last week to not enter the draft and instead pursue one final year of college. She entered her name in the transfer portal and was one of 1,200 women's basketball players to have done so since the portal opened two weeks ago. Her time at Notre Dame ended when the Irish lost to TCU in the Sweet 16 of the women's NCAA Tournament. 'Words can't express how honored I am to have met, spoken with and played for each of you over the past four years,' Miles wrote on social media. 'Your support means everything to me as I prepare to compete my graduate degree. I know that the University of Notre Dame will always be a key part of my story.' Advertisement TCU lost in the next round to Texas. The Horned Frogs have had a lot of success in the transfer portal the last few years, adding 11 transfers to build the team from scratch. TCU coach Mark Campbell has helped revitalize the careers of Hailey Van Lith and Sedona Prince. Miles started all 34 games this season for Notre Dame, averaging 15.4 points, 5.8 assists and 5.6 rebounds. She has a year of eligibility left after sitting out the 2023-24 season while recovering from a knee injury sustained a year earlier. The decision to leave college for the pros is more fraught than it used to be now that college players can earn money from lucrative name, image and likeness deals. By staying in college, Miles also stands to benefit from a new WNBA collective bargaining agreement that could give rookies higher salaries. Top picks in the WNBA currently make about $78,000. Notre Dame will look different next season. Sonia Citron, Maddy Westbeld, Kiatu King and Liza Karlen are graduating. Freshman Katie Koval announced she's transferring to LSU.
