Buddhist circuit in focus, UP looks to strengthen tourism, investment ties with Japan
Meanwhile, a delegation led by state Finance Minister Suresh Khanna is meeting investors in Japan.
Tourism Department officials said besides the Buddhist Circuit, the state is preparing an elaborate plan to showcase investment opportunities in meditation centers, hotels, and cultural infrastructure under public private partnership (PPP) mode.
The foundation of the ties was laid last year during the visit of Yamanashi prefecture Governor Kotaro Nagasaki, who was accompanied by leading Japanese business delegates. They not only signed MOUs for industrial cooperation but also discussed opportunities in tourism exchange with a joint promotion of Mount Fuji and hot springs in Japan, and Buddhist and cultural destinations such as Sarnath, Shravasti and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh.
'Familiarisation trips from Japan are being regularly organised by the state Tourism Department to showcase the Buddhist Circuit in Uttar Pradesh, which is deeply intertwined with the life of the Buddha. The idea is to showcase the significant role of UP in the global Buddhist pilgrimage trail and encourage tourism exchange with Japan,' said a senior government official.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said, 'The state has seen a three-fold rise in tourist footfall the last eight years, and this reflects our focused strategy and global engagement. Our vision is to transform the Buddhist Circuit into a world-class spiritual and cultural gateway by integrating infrastructure, international connectivity and community involvement. We are welcoming countries like Japan to partner with us in building Buddhist temples, meditation centres, wellness retreats, and hospitality projects under PPP mode.'
With Kushinagar getting much attention in the past, the focus now is on developing infrastructure and cultural centres in Kaushambi and Farrukhabad districts where the government will invest on meditation centers or developing Buddhist tourist sites.
'In 2016, nearly 28 lakh tourists visited the Buddhist sites in UP. The number nearly tripled by 2024. Kaushambi witnessed a massive jump from just over 2 lakh tourists to more than 24 lakh visitors. Kushinagar witnessed a jump to 22 lakh from 9 lakh, while Sarnath remained a leading destination with 11.8 lakh visitors in the past year,' said Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture.
The delegation led by Finance Minister Suresh Khanna is camping in Japan for the last three days, to participate in the World Expo in Osaka and hold B2B meetings with potential investors. On Thursday, the delegation, also comprising Principal Secretary, Infrastructure and Industries, Alok Kumar, explored tie-ups in the semiconductor sector and academics.
Officials said the delegation explored semiconductor collaboration with Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) in a meeting with the company's Executive Vice President (Global Sales Division and India Business) Takeshi Okubo.
During the meeting, the TEL's possibility of collaborating in semiconductor manufacturing, skill development and establishing global capability centres (GCCs) in UP were discussed.
Khanna with officials from Invest UP also visited the Osaka Prefectural Assembly to explore investment in capacity-building, youth upskilling and technology exchange. At the World Expo 2025, academic collaborations with Portugal (University of Guarda) were also discussed, it is learnt.

Anand Mahindra calls Gurudongmar lake a 'surreal vision'. The lake gained fresh attention when Capt. Sumit Bhatnagar, a former Indian Navy pilot, photographed its surreal landscape. Business tycoon Anand Mahindra shared the image on social media, calling it a 'surreal vision' and quoting Tagore: 'In the mountain, stillness surges up to explore its own height; in the lake, movement stands still to contemplate its own depth. ' The photograph showcased Gurudongmar not just as a travel destination but as a place of emotional depth, serenity, and natural artistry, inspiring global curiosity and admiration. Why Gurudongmar Lake is sacred and key to the Teesta river's origin The name 'Gurudongmar' honors Guru Padmasambhava, widely regarded as the second Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism. According to legend, the lake once remained frozen year-round, making it impossible for locals to access water. Guru Padmasambhava is believed to have blessed the lake, ensuring that a portion of it remains unfrozen even during the harshest winters. This miracle gave the lake sacred status among Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus. Pilgrims visit to collect its water, believed to possess healing powers and divine energy. For Sikhs, the lake is linked to Guru Nanak's visit, adding another layer of faith and reverence. Source: X Beyond its spiritual aura, Gurudongmar Lake plays a vital role in Sikkim's ecosystem. It is fed primarily by glacial melt from the surrounding Himalayan peaks and flows into the nearby Tso Lahmu Lake before forming the Teesta River. The Teesta is the lifeline of Sikkim and parts of West Bengal, supporting agriculture, drinking water needs, and hydropower projects downstream. Despite appearing small due to its surrounding rugged terrain, the lake covers a vast area, its turquoise waters reflecting the dramatic mountain backdrop. At this high altitude, oxygen levels are significantly lower, making the journey challenging for both visitors and the region's sparse wildlife. How to reach Gurudongmar Lake Reaching Gurudongmar is an adventure in itself. Travelers can fly into Pakyong Airport, located around 30 km from Gangtok, or Bagdogra Airport, approximately 100 km away. From there, the road journey covers the route Gangtok–Mangan–Lachung, winding through mountain roads and breathtaking landscapes. Those traveling by train can opt for New Jalpaiguri station, the nearest railhead. Visitors require a special permit, as the lake is close to the Indo-China border, and acclimatization is crucial due to the extreme altitude. The journey, while challenging, rewards travelers with unmatched views and an unforgettable spiritual experience. Travel tips for visitors Best time to visit: March to June and October to early December are ideal for clear skies and accessible roads. Permits required: As the region lies near a sensitive border area, Indian nationals need permits issued by the Sikkim Tourism Department. Foreign nationals face additional restrictions. Altitude precautions: At nearly 18,000 feet, altitude sickness is common. Visitors should acclimatize in lower areas like Lachen or Lachung and carry essential medication. Clothing and essentials: Warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and hydration are crucial due to extreme weather and low oxygen levels. Head of China's Top Furniture Retailer Dies Amid Property Slump
The chairman of China's biggest home furnishing retailer has died amid an investigation by authorities and as his company endures a protracted slump caused by the sluggish property market. Wang Linpeng, chairman and chief executive officer of Wuhan-based Easyhome New Retail Group Co., died at home on Sunday, the company said, without identifying the cause of his death. Wang was detained by Wuhan city authorities three months ago and was released earlier this month 'pending investigation,' the company said in a separate statement, without giving more details. A downturn in China's property market and weak consumer sentiment have squeezed furniture retailers and home furnishing companies. In recent years, even the likes of Ikea have tried to lure thrifty consumers with steeper discounts to stem declining growth, and Japanese furniture retailer Nitori Holdings Co. has paused expansion and shuttered some stores. Read: China Property Recovery Stalls, Eyes on Politburo for Support Easyhome, which operates malls offering furniture, construction and decoration materials, has seen its profit drop for three consecutive years. Net income declined 39% in the first quarter of 2025, according to the Shenzhen-listed company, in which Wang and parties acting in concert held a combined 44% stake. Dong Yi Ri Sheng Home Decoration Group Co., another Shenzhen-listed home furnishing company, expected a net loss of at least 46 million yuan in the first six months of this year, adding to a loss of 540 million yuan in 2024. The challenging environment has driven some out of business. Guangzhou-based furnishing brand Liangjiaju announced end of operations this month, while the once-popular renovation services provider Zhufaner informed clients in June that it's unable to fulfill orders as scheduled due to financial difficulties. China's furniture retail sales growth has slowed significantly from before the pandemic, with expansion at low single-digit in the past two years compared with more than 10% annual increase between 2016 and 2018, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. Shares of Easyhome dropped as much as 3.4% Tuesday after the company confirmed the death of its chairman. The stock has slumped more than 17% so far this year.
