Lightning strikes Southlake and Colleyville homes during North Texas storms

CBS News06-05-2025

Monday's storms in North Texas caused concern for residents in Southlake and Colleyville after two homes were hit by lightning.
In Southlake, resident Shailendra Saksena captured photos of his neighbor's home on fire after it was struck by lightning. Saksena lives four homes away from the house that caught fire, near the intersection of Monte Carlo Drive and La Mans Lane.
CBS News Texas
"We lived in Fort Worth before, and we have never seen this kind of fire caused by lightning before," said Saksena, who has lived in the Carillon neighborhood for 10 years. "I saw the smoke coming out of the house, and then within 30 seconds or so, about four or five trucks and a police truck came."
On Tuesday, an insurance adjuster was at the damaged home surveying the property, which had extensive damage to the roof. Saksena said this is the third time a home on the same block has been hit by lightning in the last five years.
"It is really scary, but we don't know why," he said. "Something has to be down there, but the same road is being hit."
CBS News Texas Chief Meteorologist Scott Padgett said multiple factors can play into why an area is more likely to get hit by lightning than others. Padgett said lightning always looks for the highest point of contact it can find.
"With all these storms coming through, if they have really high rooftops, and they're the highest thing around the surrounding areas, they're going to attract that lightning more than a lower object that's close by," said Padgett.
Padgett added that it also depends on the severity of the storm. Saksena isn't taking any risks. He installed lightning rods on the top of his home after the last strike, and so did many of his neighbors to prevent future damage. Saksena hopes others who haven't will consider it, too.
"I'm not an expert, but I will say if you can afford it, please put the lightning rods, so at least you can be with some peace of mind," he said.

Hot, humid week ahead for North Texans

A hot and sunny week is ahead in North Texas with a chance of rainfall along a weak front by Wednesday night. Monday will be mostly sunny with highs in the mid-90s and winds from the southwest around 5 to 10 mph. The moisture content around North Texas is high, which is impacting the "feels-like" temperatures, or heat index value – though today's high is 94 degrees, the heat index is in the triple digits. CBS News Texas A few isolated showers and storms will be possible across East Texas Monday, but for the majority of the region, conditions will stay dry. Dry weather will stay in the forecast throughout next week. However, late Wednesday night, there is a risk of storms with a few reaching and surpassing severe limits. The primary risk is for damaging winds 60 mph or stronger. CBS News Texas A weak cold front will move through Wednesday night and stall Thursday to the south of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. This disturbance could cause additional storms at the end of the week for some locations. CBS News Texas The official start of the Summer Solstice is Friday. It sure will feel like the season, with temperatures slightly above average and sunny skies.

Flood watch in effect for Pittsburgh area, higher rain chances Tuesday

Plenty of rain is expected this week for the Pittsburgh area. One of the rainiest days will be Tuesday and it's now also a First Alert Weather Day due to the flooding risk region-wide. The Weather Prediction Center has a good amount of our area under a level 2 "slight" risk of flooding. There are four levels when it comes to their daily forecast, so this is a big thing. Tuesday's rain will start up right at midnight, with rain showers and isolated storms continuing to be fairly widespread through 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. We should get a little bit of a break from the rain for the rest of the morning before rain and scattered storm chances pick up for the afternoon. Similar to what we saw over the weekend, there will be a fairly big spread on how much rain communities see. Some may see less than half an inch of rain, but others may see more than two inches of rain falling in just a couple of hours. Today will be hot and steamy, and it looks like most, if not all, of your day will be dry. I have rain chances at just 40 percent today. Yesterday's rain chance was in the 70 percent range, and Tuesday's rain chance will also be up around 70 percent. Morning temperatures today dipped to the mid-60s, and highs are expected to hit the mid-to-upper 70s. It will be cloudy. Looking ahead, highs on Tuesday are hitting the upper 70s. Highs on Wednesday and Thursday will be in the mid-to-low 80s. Thursday will have a chance for severe storms as a cold front rolls through during the late afternoon. While Friday will see temperatures briefly dipping to the cool range, we will see a big warm-up heading into next week. I have next Sunday's high near 90 degrees with highs in the 90s next Monday and Tuesday.
