Silver Airways cancels all flights at Orlando International Airport without notice, files bankruptcy
The Brief
Silver Airways abruptly canceled all flights at Orlando International Airport (MCO) over the weekend, leaving passengers stranded despite previously assuring continued operations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2024.
The airline had promised in a press release that tickets would remain valid and flights would operate as usual, but no official statement has been issued regarding the sudden cancelations.
Silver Airways, previously MCO's 27th largest airline, operated routes to Pensacola, Key West, The Bahamas, and Fort Lauderdale before halting service.
ORLANDO, Fla. - Those expecting to board a Silver Airways flight this weekend at Orlando International Airport (MCO) were left stranded after all arriving and departing flights were abruptly canceled.
The shutdown comes after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2024. A press release announcing the filing was released on the airlines website stating, "This decision will allow us to secure additional capital and undertake a financial restructuring that will strengthen our position as a competitive airline, ultimately benefiting you—our valued customers."
The press release also stated that:
All tickets remain valid, and we will continue operating as usual
You can book flights with Silver through our website or any other channel
United and JetBlue customers, including loyalty program members, will experience no disruptions to their bookings or services
Tickets purchased through any other airline or agency will be honored
The airline has not yet issued any statements regarding the canceled flights.
"MCO received notification yesterday afternoon that, effective immediately, all departing and arriving flights with Silver Airlines are canceled", GOAA spokeswoman Angela Starke emailed.
Silver Airways flew routes from MCO, Pensacola, Key West, The Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale and was previously ranked MCO's 27th biggest airline by passenger count.

Rite Aid store closures update: List of doomed locations keeps growing, now includes more than a third of all stores
As it prepares to sell off its remaining assets in the wake of a second bankruptcy filing, Rite Aid continues to move aggressively to close pharmacy locations that it no longer deems viable. The list includes pharmacies across 12 states, with California and New York being hit the hardest. Interested parties have until June 9 to object. Fast Company has reached out to Rite Aid to ask about the timeline of the closures. With this latest list, the pharmacy chain has now marked more than 470 stores for closure since the Chapter 11 process began about a month ago, comprising more than a third of Rite Aid's total fleet of 1,277 locations. The May 30 filing is its fourth notice of additional closures. Previous waves of closures were disclosed in earlier filings: May 5: 47 initial locations May 9: 68 additional locations May 16: 95 additional locations May 23: 151 additional locations Rite Aid had initially scrambled to sell off its prescription files amid concerns that a mass exodus of customers would diminish the value of its pharmacy assets. It quickly announced deals with CVS, Walgreens, Albertsons, and others. For most customers, that means their prescriptions will be transferred to an entirely different pharmacy and location. But only a handful of physical retail stores were included in those announcements, and the exact locations of those stores have yet to be released—leading to further uncertainty for Rite Aid customers and employees. Now time is running out for companies that may be interested in taking over additional Rite Aid locations before they close for good. Any such company was required to indicate its interest by last Friday. Bid submissions are due on June 18, with an auction planned for June 24 if necessary. In addition to physical stores, Rite Aid's remaining assets include the Thrifty ice cream brand, which is sold by third-party retailers in addition to being available at counters in many Rite Aid locations. Major healthcare business files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Biotechnology companies often encounter common challenges of long timelines for developing their products, the high costs associated with creating their innovations, and regulatory problems that must be solved to bring their inventions to market. Companies will amass huge amounts of debt over the years that's needed to develop medical devices, drugs, and other products, which can lead to financial distress and sometimes bankruptcy filings. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Over a 12-year period from 2011 through 2022, biotech firms filed fewer than 10 bankruptcies each year, but that changed beginning in 2023. Companies filed 13 petitions in 2024. Economic issues common to all businesses, such as rising costs of labor and products driven by inflation and rising inflation, played a role in distress over the last two years. AmplifyBio, which develops next-generation vaccines, medicine, and therapeutics, filed for Chapter 11 protection on May 17, 2025, seeking to sell all of its assets and liquidate through the bankruptcy process. The debtor's largest creditors included certain shareholders, including Battelle Services Co., owed $3.25 million; Battelle Memorial Institute, owed $1.89 million; and Kavra 14 LLC, owed $1.8 million. Distressed biotechnology company Synthego Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 5, seeking to sell its assets to its prepetition lender Perceptive Credit Holdings III L.P. in a bankruptcy sale with a stalking-horse bid calling for a credit bid of $74.4 million of debt owed to the lender, as well as a $12.5 million DIP financing. Austin, Texas-based biotechnology company Molecular Templates Inc., which develops cancer treatment drugs, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 20, 2025, with plans to hand its assets to its secured lender as part of a restructuring support agreement. And now, medical diagnostics company Capture Collective Inc., which is developing and commercializing medical testing equipment for early detection of radiation exposure, and two affiliates, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 27 to reorganize their debts, facing high litigation costs. Capture Collective was unable to resolve the contract disputes with claimants after the Covid-19 testing business ended. The company said high litigation costs had exhausted all of its remaining capital resources and made it impossible for the company to obtain new venture capital, according to information provided by RK Consultants. All litigation filed against Capture Collective and its affiliates is subject to an automatic stay while the bankruptcy case proceeds. Capture Collective is developing the radiation biodosimetry diagnostic test, MiRAD, a high-throughput, microRNA biomarker-based biodosimetry assay, which enables individualized clinical biomarker quantification in direct correlation with radiation exposure. Beloved Restaurant, The Ground Round, Thriving After Going Bankrupt 20 Years Ago
It's always sad when a favorite restaurant closes its doors after years in operation, but sometimes, those sad stories have happy endings. The restaurant business is a volatile one, and it's more common than not to see establishments, even ones that have been around for decades, close down. Sometimes, restaurants are forced to close because of the economy or competition, and other times, it's just because that business or brand has run its course. But, there's something to be said for nostalgia. Now, a popular restaurant chain that went bankrupt 20 years ago is thriving once again. It's quite a turnaround and shows what a little creativity can do. The Ground Round was a popular American restaurant chain founded back in 1969. It was huge in the 1980s but had some trouble decades later, so the Ground Round filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2004. So, for years, the Ground Round only lived in the hearts and minds of those who remembered it. Now, however, a Massachusetts couple is bringing that beloved brand back. That couple, Joseph and Nachi Shea, have reopened a Ground Round location in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. They regularly post on the restaurant's Facebook page with updates about its menu and hours. Joseph and Nachi purchased the branding rights to the Ground Round last year. Now, the restaurant is opening and welcoming customers. Joseph tells Marketplace, "We're just a husband-and-wife team. We don't have investors or deep pockets, we're bootstrapping this." 'People have brought in different menus," Nachi added. "They've brought in even employee manuals from the old one. We had a lady bring in her old suspenders from when she used to work at the original Ground Round here in town." So, will the couple expand past their one location and make the Ground Round a national brand again?
