Former Wales wing Louis Rees-Zammit announces return to rugby after leaving NFL

The 24-year-old made 32 appearances for Wales before announcing in January 2024 that he would retire from rugby union in order to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL via its International Player Pathway Program.
Rees-Zammit said in a post on Instagram: 'I've got an exciting announcement to make! I've decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby!
'It's been a great experience, but it's time to come home. I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season.
'There's only one thing that's on my mind, that's coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can't explain how excited I am!!
'There'll be more news to come soon but for now, see you soon rugby fans.'
The news is likely to come as a welcome boost to recently-appointed Wales head coach Steve Tandy, who takes over a side that only ended an 18-match losing streak that lasted almost two years with a hard-fought win over Japan last month.

Patrick Mahomes' mom fears he'll suffer a major injury despite years of good health for the Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been blessed with a relatively clean injury history so far in his NFL career - a rarity among signal callers in the league. But this good luck and health has not eased any worries for his mother watching him on in the stands. In a reel posted to Instagram on Saturday, Randi Mahomes opened up about the fear that she has as a parent of an injury to her son. 'Let me tell you as a mom: to this day, it's hard for me to watch the football games completely,' Randi revealed. 'I am pacing and I am playing with grandkids... I'm doing anything I can do not to just really focus on every single play because it is a fear that I have. 'I don't normally speak about it, but at the same time, I keep thinking it's gonna get easier to watch. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Randi Mahomes (@randimahomes) 'And we had injuries, and so, it's something that I always tell them to like focus on your body, listen to your body, listen to your coaches and the doctors also. 'We all know that football is a contact sport and it's something that I've accepted. Every player's team when it comes to injuries anyone on any team gets even a little bit hurt. I lose my breath for a moment and I'm praying for each and every one of them.' Patrick hasn't gone his entire career injury free, but the injuries he has picked up have not been major ones. The worst injury he's had in the NFL so far is a patella dislocation that he sustained in Week 7 of the 2019 season against the Denver Broncos. Even then, an MRI didn't show any major damage and Mahomes was back playing within two weeks. He has sustained injuries in the playoffs - notably a concussion and a turf toe injury in the 2020 season that required no missed time (Mahomes did get surgery to fix his turf toe problem after losing Super Bowl LV). Then, in 2022, Mahomes suffered an ankle sprain in the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars which required him to miss most of the first half. Backup quarterback Chad Henne managed to keep the Chiefs in the game and Mahomes eventually returned - tossing a game-winning touchdown pass. Prior to his pro days, Mahomes fractured a bone in the wrist of his non-throwing hand while playing quarterback at Texas Tech. Despite the injury, he continued playing the final five games of the season.

'Fantastic' Porthcawl could host Women's Open again

R&A chief executive Mark Darbon says Royal Porthcawl will be considered to host another Women's Open after holding a "fantastic" competition over the Yamashita won the event in south Wales, holding off the challenge of England's Charley Hull and Japanese compatriot Minami Katsu to finish two shots despite impressing with its infrastructure and facilities - and attracting more than 47,000 spectators - Darbon says the links course is not currently in the running to host the men's Open Championship."We have had fantastic feedback on the golf course and the player set-up and facilities more broadly," said Darbon, who added that crowd numbers were "above expectations". "This is a wonderful links golf course, a real test, and they played it in some tricky conditions through the week."This is a great venue. At the AIG Women's Open we are really focused on giving these wonderful athletes a stage [on which] to perform and that requires fantastic venues."We are very proud of that pool of venues and this has been a great week on that front."We think venue choice is really critical and we have had a great week here, so I certainly think it could be considered for the future."We have named venues for the next couple of years and we'll continue to assess things, but this is an important venue for the R&A." Darbon praised the working relationship with the town, golf club and government bodies."I think this is the largest women's sporting event ever in Wales and that's something we are incredibly proud of," he said."Venues are really important to us. This is not the first R&A championship hosted here. We have had senior Opens and some of our significant amateur championships here. So it's a venue that is very much in our thinking."But while Royal Porthcawl has hit the mark for women's, seniors' and amateur golf events, it faces fierce competition to even be part of the conversation to host the men's blue riband Open Championship."Look, it's not being considered at the moment," Darbon admitted."We are very happy with the pool of venues we have got for the Open Championship, in no small part because of the scale of infrastructure that's required these days to stage a modern Open Championship."We are looking at one incremental venue maybe as part of that pool of options and that's over at Portmarnock [in the Republic of Ireland], but largely we are really happy with the venues we have."We love coming here with our championships, but the scale of the modern Open I think presents a challenge for the men's competition."

NFL legend Jared Allen suffers embarrassing wardrobe malfunction at Hall of Fame induction ceremony

NFL legend Jared Allen was left red-faced over the weekend after suffering a humiliating wardrobe malfunction while being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Allen, a five-time Pro Bowl and four-time All-Pro defensive end, received his gold jacket on Saturday as he was honored for his memorable 12-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers. Yet after being presented with the jacket in Canton, Ohio, the 43-year-old went to perform his signature 'calf-roping' sack dance on stage - and quickly regretted it. In a hilarious video which has gone viral on social media, Allen gets down on one knee and tears the pants of his suit in the midst of his celebration. As he returns to his feet the football icon quickly realizes that his pants have been ripped while walking off the stage with his family. The Vikings, with whom he spent six seasons, captured the embarrassing moment and shared it on X, writing: 'Yes, he really hit the calf-roping celly in his gold jacket'. Yes, he really hit the calf-roping celly in his gold jacket 🙌🙌 — Minnesota Vikings (@Vikings) August 2, 2025 Allen started his NFL career with the Chiefs, who selected him with the 126th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2004 draft. He quickly became a vital player in Kansas City, where he spent four seasons before heading to Minnesota. The ex-Idaho State star spent the bulk of his career with the Vikings, before he enjoyed brief stints with the Bears and Panthers. He chose to hang up his cleats at the end of the 2015 season. Over the course of his 12 years in the league, Allen registered 136 sacks - the 12th highest in NFL history. At the time of his retirement he was in the top 10 of the all-time list. As well as the ex-Viking, Eric Allen, Antonio Gates and Sterling Sharpe - the older brother of fired ESPN host Shannon Sharpe - were enshrined into the Hall of Fame at the weekend. Sterling was presented with his gold jacket by brother Shannon, who was inducted himself 11 years ago. It was his first public appearance since being fired by ESPN last week in the wake of his settled $50million rape lawsuit.
