Celebration at Cristiano Ronaldo household! Al Nassr star's eldest son gets maiden Portugal U-15 call-up

Mint06-05-2025

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo's eldest son Cristiano dos Santos has been called up to the Portugal U-15 football team for the first time on Tuesday. The development of Dos Santos getting selected in the youth national team was shared by the Al Nassr star who took to Instagram to share the exciting news.
Like his father, the 14-year-old Dos Santos currently plays for Al Nassr youth team in Saudi Arabia. He also had spells at Juventus and Manchester United - Ronaldo's former clubs.
Portugal U-15 will face the likes of Japan, Greece and England at the Vlatko Markovic youth tournament in Croatia scheduled to be held from May 13 to 18. Beaming with pride, Ronaldo wrote on Instagram, 'Proud of you, son.'
Dos Santos's made a move to Al Nassr from Manchester United in 2023 after Ronaldo left the Old Trafford following a fall out with then Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag.
Prior to that, Dos Santos represented Juventus at the youth level. Following his move to Al Nassr, Dos Santos impressed everyone in the Saudi Arabian youth division. He has also been at Real Madrid academy.
According to a BBC report, Dos Santos has scored as many as 58 goals in a season during his time with Juventus. He has also played alongside former Manchester United great Wayne Rooney's son, Kai, at the Old Trafford during Ronaldo's second stint with English giants.
Notably, Dos Santos is also eligible to play for the United States - his country of birth - and Spain because of Ronaldo's residency when his father was playing for Real Madrid.

Australia's experience in England will help them in WTC final: Harbhajan

As the ICC World Test Championship final 2025 inches closer, the cricketing world awaits a classic contest between defending champions Australia and a determined South African outfit. The summit clash at Lord's promises high-quality cricket, tense moments and individual brilliance. While South Africa have shown remarkable growth under Temba Bavuma, many believe Australia still carry a crucial edge — thanks to their familiarity with English conditions and past success in big-match scenarios. Former cricketers and current JioStar experts Aakash Chopra and Harbhajan Singh shared their insights on Star Sports and JioHotstar ahead of the marquee clash. They pointed to key factors like Pat Cummins' all-round value, Australia's mental strength, and the threat posed by match-winners like Travis Head and Nathan Lyon as possible deciders in this much-anticipated final. Cummins' all-round presence a major asset Aakash Chopra believes Pat Cummins stands out not just for his bowling but for his multi-dimensional impact on the game. He noted that Cummins has a knack for breaking partnerships at crucial stages and contributes with the bat down the order as well. Chopra underlined that Cummins' leadership plays a central role in keeping the opposition under pressure throughout the match. Australia's experience in English conditions will count Harbhajan Singh pointed out that Australia's familiarity with English conditions, owing to frequent tours and past WTC finals, gives them an edge. He remarked that having played high-stakes cricket in England, especially the Ashes, the Aussies know how to adapt and strategise better than most. He felt this experience would be invaluable against a less-exposed South African side. Handling pressure sets Australia apart According to Harbhajan, what separates Australia from others in global events is their composure under pressure. He observed that their ability to remain calm and decisive during crunch situations is a key reason behind their unmatched success in ICC tournaments over the years. Key roles for Lyon and Head The veteran spinner also highlighted Nathan Lyon and Travis Head as players to watch. He felt Lyon could exploit South Africa's relative weakness against spin, while Head's aggressive batting could be game-changing if he finds rhythm. Both, he noted, are capable of shifting momentum rapidly in Australia's favour.

Australia announces playing 11 for WTC 2025 final; Cameron Green included

Australia have unveiled a balanced and experienced playing 11 for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025, set to begin on June 11 at Lord's, London. With a clear intention to defend their WTC title, skipper Pat Cummins confirmed a line-up that blends stability with strategic flexibility. The biggest headline is the return of all-rounder Cameron Green, who is set to make his comeback in whites after recovering from a back injury. Marnus Labuschagne, traditionally a No. 3 batter, is set to open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja, showcasing Australia's adaptive approach. According to Cummins, this change was designed to give the batting order more depth in the middle. Labuschagne to open, Green returns to Test fold In a notable tactical move, Australia will promote Marnus Labuschagne to partner Khawaja at the top. While he has never opened in Tests before, the team management believes his composure suits the challenge at Lord's. Cameron Green's inclusion adds heft to the batting line-up and offers a valuable seam option alongside Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Cummins himself. Cummins noted that Green has recovered well and looked in rhythm during training, making his selection a straightforward decision. Green last played a Test during the 2024 summer before undergoing surgery. Hazlewood preferred over Boland in pace unit Australia have opted to field Josh Hazlewood ahead of Scott Boland for the final seamer's slot. Hazlewood's greater experience in English conditions and recent form tipped the scales in his favour. Cummins acknowledged the difficulty in leaving out Boland but stressed the need to go with the 'best possible combination'. Webster retains spot, Lyon to lead spin attack Beau Webster keeps his place in the 11, offering flexibility with his ability to bowl both seam and off-spin. Nathan Lyon will shoulder the primary spin duties, playing his second WTC final after a pivotal role in the 2023 triumph. Australia playing 11 for WTC 2025 Final: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

Brazil one win away from securing FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification

Ancelotti's changes to shore up the defense at Ecuador worked. Defender Alexsandro had an impressive game on debut and veteran midfielder Casemiro helped block the hosts. More changes are expected on Tuesday, the day Ancelotti turns 66. Striker Richarlison lost his place in the starting lineup to Matheus Cunha during training, and teenager Estvo is expected to make way on the left wing for Raphinha, who was suspended last week. Ancelotti is also expected to replace midfielder Gerson with winger Gabriel Martinelli. We had the necessary time on those days to prepare both matches, a little less against Ecuador. The team is fresh, we will have every tool to do well tomorrow, Ancelotti said Monday. Raphinha gives us very important mobility. That could be key to unblock tomorrow's match. Casemiro enjoyed success with Ancelotti at Real Madrid, but has said his return to the national team after more than a year's absence is due to his performances at Manchester United. I'm glad to be back and back playing well, I want to stress that," Casemiro said. I am not here because I know the coach, but because I deserve it. This was undoubtedly one of the most important years of my career. Paraguay will be a tough challenge for Brazil. Since coach Gustavo Alfaro took over, the Paraguayans have been unbeaten for nine matches. Alfaro has already equaled Paraguay's record for qualifying points set by coach Paulo Csar Carpegiani in the campaign for the 1998 World Cup in France. More South American teams could qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Second-place Ecuador can do it by winning in Peru on Tuesday. Fourth-place Brazil or third-place Paraguay could secure a spot at next year's global tournament with a win in Sao Paulo as long as Venezuela loses at Uruguay. If Venezuela draws, either team could also qualify with a win if defending champion Argentina, which has already qualified, beats Colombia. The most anticipated match of the round is in Sao Paulo, where Carlo Ancelotti will make his home debut as Brazil coach. Brazil, which had a 0-0 draw with Ecuador last week, is two points behind Paraguay in the standings. Lionel Messi's Argentina takes on Colombia in Buenos Aires in a match where coach Lionel Scaloni will continue adding depth to his squad. South America's last two qualifying game days are in September. The top six teams earn direct spots for the World Cup next year in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The seventh-place team goes into an international playoff. Eyes on Venezuela As the only South American team that has never made it to the World Cup, Venezuela will be under extra pressure at Centenario Stadium against fifth-place Uruguay. A win for Venezuela and coach Fernando Batista will almost lock up seventh place and boost its chances of fighting for a direct spot. A Venezuela defeat could give Bolivia a chance to bid for the international playoff position. We have three finals in which we can't overlook, we can't fail. We are ready for that," Batista said. We are focused on getting the most possible points. Uruguay has endured a shaky patch with no wins in its last four qualifiers. A home victory against Venezuela is key for the team to regain confidence. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa, who has been clashing with Uruguay players since the Copa America last year, took some blame for the poor performance in the 2-0 loss at Paraguay. I truly feel responsible for the situation of the team because the problem is the lack of creation of scoring opportunities, and my position before this problem is to propose solutions, Bielsa said. I have players who are special in their clubs, but can't do it in the squad I have ... I have no option (but) to recognize my lack of efficiency." Uruguay remains without key midfielder Federico Valverde, who is injured, and striker Darwin Nez, who is suspended.
