Escaped lion shot dead in Turkey after attacking worker
ISTANBUL - A lion that escaped a theme park near the Turkish resort of Antalya was shot dead on July 6 after attacking a man, the local governor and media reports said.
The lion, reportedly named Zeus, escaped his enclosure at the Land of Lions animal theme park in Manavgat, some 60km west of Antalya in the early hours of the morning, the local governor said in a statement.
According to BirGun newspaper, the lion then attacked agricultural worker Suleiman Kir, who was asleep in a pistachio field with his wife.
Mr Kir then tussled with the lion before it ran off. He was injured but not badly and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
'We were covered with blankets to protect ourselves from mosquitoes and when the prayer call sounded, I tried to stand up but I couldn't,' he told the newspaper.
'Suddenly I felt something touch my left foot and when I eventually managed to get up, I saw it was something huge – I thought it was a dog.'
In a video posted online, he described the moments wrestling with the lion.

'We called for help but there was no one around. As the lion was biting my calf and my neck, I grabbed him around the neck and began to squeeze, and he backed off. At that moment, the security forces came,' he said.
'If I had not been strong, I wouldn't be here right now.'
Antalya's governor said in a statement that the lion had been tracked down and shot dead.
'It was not possible to catch the escaped lion alive because it posed a danger to people and the environment so it was shot,' he said, indicating that an investigation had been opened into the incident.
BirGun newspaper said there were around 30 big cats at the Land of Lions. AFP

The watch owner met the two youths and allowed them to inspect the watch, which was valued at about $47,800. They negotiated and agreed on a price of $46,000. But once again, Nigel and Lucian did not steal the watch and instead said they would think about it. When Nigel told Tan they did not follow through with the scheme , the latter promised to increase his and Lucian's share of the sales proceeds. The two youths met the watch owner again half an hour later. After Lucian was allowed to wear the watch for Nigel to take photographs of it, they ran away from the meeting point in different directions. The watch owner chased but failed to catch them , and called the police. Subsequently, Lucian passed Tan the watch and Tan transferred $5,000 into Nigel's girlfriend's bank account. Nigel did not withdraw his share. Lucian withdrew $1,750 from the sum in the account. Both of them were later arrested. DPP Tung called for Nigel to be sentenced to reformative training, while his lawyer from the Public Defender's Office Vadi PVSS pushed for probation, which would not leave a criminal record. A probation officer had deemed Nigel not suitable for probation based on factors including his previous brushes with the law , for which he received conditional warnings. Mr Vadi said Nigel's previous conditional warnings were not a finding of guilt. '(For) this particular offence, he was under a very unfamiliar circumstance. The stepfather is there hovering over him and making him do certain things. 'He's no hardened criminal. He chickened out... he didn't want to do it (at first),' said the lawyer. District Judge Carol Ling found him suitable for a minimum of six months' reformative training instead of probation. She told Nigel that every action comes with consequences. But she added: 'It doesn't define who you are, it doesn't determine who you're going to be. There will be fresh chapters of your life written after this.'

Originally set to reach Incheon at 7.50pm (6.50pm in Singapore) on Aug 13 , AirAsia flight D7 506 reportedly touched down at Gimpo, 35km from Incheon, at 8.08pm after circling in the air. According to passengers on the flight, after the captain announced they had arrived at Incheon, people stood up to retrieve their bags from the overhead compartments, but some looked out of the windows and checked their phones to find they were at Gimpo. 'Everyone panicked. It seemed the cabin crew didn't know we had landed at Gimpo until passengers told them,' Ms Lee Mi-hyun, a passenger in her 40s who was returning from a trip to Malaysia with her husband and eight-year-old daughter, told The Korea Herald. ' One crew member even said she needed to call her parents, who were waiting for her at Incheon International Airport.' What caused the flight to divert to Gimpo was 'turbulence' over Incheon Airport, where it refuelled before departing for Incheon about two hours later at 10.17pm, according to the Korea Airports Corporation. No water was offered and there was almost no food left on board, leaving passengers with children upset. Some even said they would rather get off at Gimpo before the plane departed for Incheon,' she said. The captain and crew apologised over the public announcement system as the plane headed to Incheon, where it landed at 10.59pm, said Ms Lee. Some passengers criticised the airline for failing to provide a clear explanation of the situation. 'During the two hours before we departed for Incheon again, there was no clear explanation of what caused the landing error or any effort to reassure passengers,' another passenger surnamed Ryu, 39, told The Korea Herald.
