Researchers Can Spot A Baby's Intelligence By 7 Months, But Nurturing It Is Way More Important

Babies and small children are learning nonstop, and it is exhilarating (if sometimes exhausting) to observe.
You've seen it before, that first time that your child looks for the dog when he hears barking, or the first time he positions his blocks carefully so they'll stack higher without falling, or the first time that he recognizes the steps in a routine. It's incredible, and you probably shouted for your spouse, or posted on social media, or called a family member, to share how smart your baby is.
Although it's a commonly shared experience among parents, it remains true: there are genuine signs of intelligence that we can spot in our children. Researchers even claim that they can identify these signs by seven months old. However, parents should focus on nurturing intelligence, more than measuring it.
There's a popular quote that is often attributed to Albert Einstein (though there's no evidence he actually said it):
'Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.'
Whichever person initially said this has hit on a key point. We typically measure intelligence in IQ points, which define how capable a person is in certain specific problem-solving skills, logic, and reasoning, compared to the standardized 'norm.' Scientists generally recognize that IQ is a flawed metric. It's only a partial predictor of career success and is not an arbiter of success in relationships or overall happiness.
That said, IQ does measure a few critical skills and abilities, and there are early signs for some of these.
The most ethical way to test theories about the influence of nature and nurture (genetics and environment) in children is to study twins, particularly when they're raised separately. If identical twins (who share the exact same genes) are more likely to share a trait than fraternal twins, we know genes heavily influence it. If two kids with identical genes but raised separately have different traits, we can conclude that their environment had an impact.
In this case, a longitudinal study conducted at the University of Colorado examined traits associated with intelligence and how they correlated with intelligence testing as the individuals grew.
The key findings were that a handful of traits provided an early indication of later intelligence measurements.
These included the baby's skill at vocalization, tracking an object with his eyes, and what they call 'novelty preference' — the measure of how much a baby shows interest in new objects and faces over familiar ones, according to Parents.
However, the most essential finding of researchers is that these tests only predicted a small percentage of later intelligence, and even by age three, they could only predict about 20% of the variance between individuals.
In short, yes, you are seeing how smart your baby is. You're not wrong about that.
However, that intelligence doesn't automatically transfer from infancy to adulthood. Intelligence needs nurturing and support to grow with your child.
It's also not the sole measure of success in your child's life or your parenting. Raising a child who is capable and resilient is at least as necessary. A child who is mentally healthy and prepared will have a wealth of opportunities, whether or not they are the quickest learner in high school Algebra.
Parents can take heart in these signs of intellect and bask in them, but the important thing is that we move forward, encouraging our kids' intelligence and supporting their mental health and well-being.
When we measure IQ, we lean heavily on abstract thinking and problem-solving.
On a paper test, this might involve examining an image of a 3D object turned at different angles and identifying whether it's the same, which requires the ability to imagine how something looks from a different perspective. It can also include problem-solving questions, such as the ones where the solution involves combining a set of numbers in various ways to reach a specific total.
We can support these skills by helping our kids look at things from different angles, literally and figuratively. When we're reading a story, we can stop to ask how our child thinks that each character sees the situation. (The wolf and the three little pigs have very different perspectives!) When we see our child trying to figure out something — reaching for the sink, pouring from one container to another, stacking blocks — we can stand back and supervise without interfering, allowing them to experiment and learn for themselves what works. (Of course, this applies as long as their experimenting is safe!)
We can provide tools for exploration, like sensory kits, plastic cups of different sizes and shapes to pour from in the bathtub, blocks, and even sticks, leaves, and sand.
Most vitally, we can choose to reward curiosity and exploration, rather than stifling it.
Reading to our kids and encouraging them to love reading is one of the most important things we can do; statistics show that parents are spending less time sharing books with their children.
There's evidence that exposing children to music and encouraging them to create their own music helps improve memory, attention, and concentration. If you have access to music lessons, that's wonderful. If not, your kids can still tap out a beat and follow along with their favorite songs.
Allowing kids the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them is beneficial, too. It's good for anyone, but especially kids, to know that if they try and fail, it's not the end of the world, just the start of a new opportunity.
Most of all, supporting and loving our kids through whatever they try, and encouraging them to always keep trying, will help them find their path, whether that path is through academics or another interest.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in the United States, with age and family being primary risk factors. While healthcare professionals do not currently recommend cannabis and CBD as a treatment option for macular degeneration or other eye health issues, ongoing research suggests it may one day be a possible treatment option for some people with this eye condition. Do CBD treatments help with macular degeneration? About macular degeneration treatments There are two kinds of age-related macular degeneration. Dry AMD is more common. Treatment for dry AMD includes taking specific nutritional supplements and using low-vision aids. Wet AMD is not as common, but it's more treatable. Treatments include anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) eye injections and light therapy. Generally, cannabis use is linked to lowered eye pressure and is known to help lower inflammation throughout the body. Some people with AMD have reported anecdotal benefits from CBD use. This 2022 research in the United Kingdom (IK) does indicate that CBD may possibly lower the risk of this eye condition. However, there's not enough medical research overall to support CBD as a treatment for any type of AMD. In the UK study looking at people who'd used marijuana (including CBD) more than 100 times, they did see a lower risk for AMD. But the research also indicated people experienced higher rates of blood vessel loss, possibly leading to AMD development sooner for younger people. Research on this topic has also found that many forms of CBD can't be easily administered as treatments for eye conditions. For instance, CBD oils aren't the right consistency to be made into eye drops. Can you use CBD for other eye conditions? CBD is known to have an effect on eye pressure, which could be a meaningful benefit for acute or chronic eye conditions. For example, glaucoma is an eye condition that can lead to permanent vision loss, but it has a different cause than AMD. It's often caused by a buildup of eye pressure on your optic nerve (it sends visual information from your eyes to your brain). Lowering eye pressure could potentially lower the risk of glaucoma and help treat active cases. But research is conflicting and shows there may also be side effects of using CBD for glaucoma or other eye conditions, including mental health concerns, vision changes such as color blindness, retinal deterioration, and optic nerve damage. No enough research exists to support CBD as a treatment for eye pressure or as a way to lower the risk of either glaucoma or AMD. Results are conflicting. A 2018 study found that CBD (cannabidiol) eye drops increased eye pressure in rats. But the same study found that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) eye drops reduced eye pressure by up to 30%. Treatment of AMD and glaucoma isn't the only possible eye-health-related use of CBD. Research is also being done into the use of CBD to help treat: diabetic retinopathy eye inflammation corneal inflammation eye pain Additional research is needed to determine if CBD or THC could be used in glaucoma or AMD treatment and prevention. Right now neither is approved for managing these conditions. Traditional AMD treatments Traditional, scientifically backed AMD treatment regimens depend on the type of AMD you have. They may include. Anti-VEGF injections: These injections are the most common treatment for wet AMD. They stop the growth of eye blood vessels and can prevent and possibly reverse vision loss. Light therapy: Known as photodynamic therapy, this treatment type may also be used to target and destroy blood vessels. Nutritional supplements: A combination of nutritional supplements known as the AREDS2 formula has been shown to help prevent further vision loss due to dry AMD. However, these supplements aren't proven to lower the chance of AMD onset overall. Low vision aids: These can help with any vision loss you experience due to either form of AMD or another condition. They are an essential tool in managing dry AMD. An eye doctor can help you determine the best options for you. Options may include wearing glasses, using a magnifying glass, large print materials, and an array of computer programs or mobile apps. How can you prevent macular degeneration? AMD is tied to multiple risk factors, many of which you can't control including age and genetics passed down through families. However, you can practice habits to support good eye health, which benefits your eyes lifelong. These may include: Getting regular eye exams. Don't smoke or quit smoking. Getting regular physical activity. Eating certain foods that may help your eye health, including low cholesterol foods.

Earlier this week, San Diego startup Gallant announced $18 million in funding to bring the first FDA-approved ready-to-use stem cell therapy to veterinary medicine. If it passes regulatory muster, it could create a whole new way to treat our fur babies. It's still an experimental field, even though people have been researching stem cells for humans for decades. Seven-year-old Gallant's first target is a painful mouth condition in cats called Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS), which Gallant says could receive FDA approval by early 2026. The field has shown some encouraging early results. Studies on dogs with arthritis showed improvements in pain and mobility, with some benefits lasting up to two years. But when researchers tried similar treatments for kidney disease in cats — that's another condition Gallant wants to tackle — the results were more mixed. What makes Gallant's approach different is convenience. Most stem cell treatments today require harvesting cells from the patient or donors with matching tissue, whereas Gallant's therapy uses ready-to-use cells from donor animals, even if they are a different species. Investors clearly see potential here. The funding round was led by existing backer Digitalis Ventures, with participation from NovaQuest Capital Management, which previously invested in the first FDA-approved human stem cell therapy. The company has an interesting backstory. Gallant's founder, Aaron Hirschhorn, previously sold DogVacay to its biggest rival in the dog-sitting marketplace, Rover. Hirschhorn passed away in 2021; Gallant is now led by Linda Black, who joined as its president and chief scientific officer from nearly the beginning. Massive Review Finds No 'Safe' Level of Processed Meat Consumption

We know that processed meat isn't particularly good for us, having already been linked to dementia, diabetes, and cancer, but how much of it counts as a 'safe' level of consumption? According to new research, there's no such thing. US researchers reviewed over 70 previous studies (involving several million participants in total), analyzing the relationships between ultra-processed food and three health issues: type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and colorectal cancer. Associations for processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fatty acids were looked into, and it was the processed meat that came out with the worst results – even if the amount eaten is only small. "The monotonic increases in health risk with increased consumption of processed meat suggest that there is not a 'safe' amount of processed meat consumption with respect to diabetes or colorectal cancer risk," the team from the University of Washington in Seattle writes in their published paper. Related: It's important to put the research into context. The associations found are relatively weak, they don't prove direct cause and effect, and the analyzed studies relied on self-reported dietary habits (which may not be completely accurate). However, the study has several strengths too – it uses a Burden of Proof method, which is more conservative when assessing impacts on health. The results tend to be minimum values, which means they likely underestimate the true health risk. What's particularly notable here is that minimal increases in consumption still raised risk levels. "Habitual consumption of even small amounts of processed meat, sugary drinks, and trans fatty acids is linked to increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease and colorectal cancer," University of Washington nutrition biologist Demewoz Haile told CNN. For example, the equivalent of one hot dog a day was associated with at least an 11 percent greater risk of type 2 diabetes, and at least a 7 percent greater risk of colorectal cancer, compared to eating no processed meat at all. For beverages, an extra can of sugar-sweetened pop a day was linked to a 8 greater risk of type 2 diabetes, and a 2 percent greater risk of ischemic heart disease, compared to not drinking anything sugary. For trans fatty acids, a small daily amount was associated with a 3 percent increase in risk of ischemic heart disease, compared with zero consumption. "This information provides critical data for public health specialists and policymakers responsible for dietary guidelines and potential initiatives that aim to reduce the consumption of these processed foods," write the researchers. While the study has limitations, its scale and conservative methodology make it worth taking note of. This is backed up by a commentary in the same journal, which does note the role of ultra-processed foods in improving food accessibility and shelf life, particularly in areas with limited access to fresh food. The message from the research team is that cutting out ultra-processed foods as much as possible is the best option for our health. The research has been published in Nature Medicine.
