In the heart of a revolution, where hope clashes with despair, "Bougainvillea" tells a powerful story of resilience and transformation.
Directed by Yasser Faiz, the film is set to world premiere at the 6th MENA Film Festival in Canada, running from January 25 to 30.
"Bougainvillea" captures the final harrowing days before the fall of Sudan's leader.
The film follows Shama, a young activist arrested on her way to a protest and thrown into a dark cell with four women who have been imprisoned for months. Together, they endure cruelty, their shared suffering growing into a bond of solidarity.
As a silent newcomer joins them, the tension heightens, but despite the darkness, their dreams of love keep their spirits alive. When the revolution succeeds, their newfound freedom brings unexpected challenges as they face the true cost of survival.
"Bougainvillea" draws its name from a hardy, vibrant flower that thrives even in harsh environments, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of Sudanese women.
At its core, the film is a poignant reflection on their role in the 2018 Sudanese Revolution. Women were not merely participants but leaders of the uprising, embodying its rallying cry for freedom, peace, and justice.
Discussing the story behind "Bougainvillea" and the film's emphasis on authenticity, Faiz said, 'The extraordinary role of Sudanese women in public life and political activism, which reached its peak during the December 2018 Revolution, inspired me to create this film.' His dedication to authenticity led him to conduct interviews with former female political detainees, exploring the emotional and psychological dimensions of their experiences.
The Sudanese women's revolution marked a defining moment in global feminist history, with their voices and chants reverberating through the streets.
"Bougainvillea" carves space for these voices, shining a light on women whose battle for justice did not end with the revolution's triumph but continues in the struggle for lasting change.
This short film stands as a cinematic tribute to the strength of Sudanese women, whose dreams of a just future bloom brightly, even in the darkest corners of history.
