The Perfect Tomato Candle Exists, Thanks to Carbone and Malin+Goetz

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. In case you weren't aware, it's tomato season. Every single person in my life knows this, because each year when the clock strikes midnight on August 1, I essentially turn into a giant tomato like some kind of strange Cinderella story. I have a playlist on my Spotify called 'tomato szn.' I spend every late-summer Saturday at the farmers market, picking up blushed fruits and deciding whether or not they have enough heft to slip into my tote bag. I even have a tiny little tomato tattooed on my wrist. This slice of the year is my favorite time—not just because I like eating tomato toast and making pomodoro, but because of what it symbolizes. Tomato season always returns. It serves as a respite. And honestly, the real magic of the season is that it only comes once a year, and briefly. Like everything that makes life better, it wouldn't be as good if it existed all the time. But still, every year in August, I find myself wishing that there was some way for me to catch tomato season in a bottle and save it for later—for any moment when I really needed it. Now, a new collaboration between Malin+Goetz and Carbone is getting me a little closer to that dream. Malin+Goetz has a tomato candle that I've long loved—it's an herbaceous spin on the fruit, like a whiff of the vine rather than the flesh. It's laced with fresh basil, green ivy, lavender, mint, mandarin, petitgrain, cedarwood, and green pepper. It comes in a classic clear vessel and has white wax. It's a fantastic scent, and one I treasured lighting last winter as a sort of shrine to the summer heat. But the brand's new Carbone collaboration, the tomato supercandle, is something special. It's like the difference between a July tomato (very good) and an August one (truly great), or perhaps the difference between a regular old plate of pasta with vodka sauce and Carbone's signature spicy rigatoni. This limited-edition candle is a work of art. It's small-batch, and the wax is a deep red color, like a tomato falling off the vine. It's housed in burgundy glass that resembles a pasta bowl. And its extra scent notes—black currant, pink pepper, and galbanum—add a new layer of depth, like a sauce that's been simmered just an hour or two longer to get a more intense flavor. I am someone who wholeheartedly believes in using your good things. Wear the nice clothes. Spritz the expensive perfume. Eat the good olive oil. But for this candle, I'm going to break my own philosophy and stow it away for later. I'll light it whenever I need a jolt of summer or a memory of a juicy, peak-August tomato in the dead of winter. And I know that it will help get me through any dark days ahead.

Transform Your Home: 44 Affordable Decor Products

Lego cherry blossoms to add to your already-cherished brick bouquet or to plop into that darling little vase that's been sitting empty on your desk forever because you've never been willing to commit to keeping actual blooms alive. Or faux peonies for anyone who has claimed them as their favorite flower since Blair Waldorf said they were hers (guilty). These will remain just as beautiful as the day you buy 'em because, duh, they're fake! A set of amber glass soap dispensers with Aesop vibes you can use to fool anyone lucky enough to use your guest bathroom — fill 'em with your favorite scent for a fraction of the cost but without skimping on style. A faux monstera plant that'll make it appear like you 1. have impeccable decorating skills and 2. you know how to take care of plants. Even if neither of these things are true, no one visiting your home has to know. Let them go on thinking you're a natural interior designer/gardener. A set of faux coffee-table books inspired by the fancy-schmancy Assouline travel series, except they're *a lot* more practical! They open with a magnetic lid to become secret storage compartments so that you can hide your stash of chocolate treats from your partner. A gold arched bookcase you'll look at with the same expression Belle had the moment she first laid her eyes on Beast's library. And, I mean, who would blame you? It's gorgeous, costs less than 100 bucks (!!!!!!!), has various tiers to display all your favorite odds 'n' ends, and will truly take your home decor to the next level. A luxurious faux-fur rug worthy of a spot in a grand old castle that has been carefully preserved since the 1800s. Or, ya know, next to your bed so your tootsies will be nice and warm when you finally convince yourself to get up and start your day. A statement checkered cutting board with a high-end feel to it without the cost. Hosting book club? Break this baby out and craft the most chic charcuterie board anyone has ever seen — so beautiful it might rival the too-hot-to-handle main character in the novel you're supposed to be discussing. An outlet light for anyone who has accidentally walked into a wall when getting up in the middle for a glass of water — this lil' gadget will subtly light your way without the need for a bulkier option. A super absorbent floral dish drying mat to bring pretty vibes into your kitchen and to your least favorite chore (doing the dishes, siiiiiiiigh). Black matte-steel cabinet pulls you can easily swap in place of your current ones to bring a more modern feel to the vanity you inherited when you moved into your place. A waterproof, stain-resistant faux marble granite adhesive that'll give your old desk an entirely new life or upgrade your ratty bathroom counters into ones you'd admire on Pinterest. Stainless-steel-effect contact paper you can use to give your outdated appliances a Cinderella-like makeover., Bibbidi, bobbidi, BOOM: fresh and modern kitchen at your service. A wall-mounted coat rack to serve as both a lovely lil' piece of wall decor and lend a helpful hand to hang your accessories — as if you needed another excuse to buy a new coat. Prismatic window film, because once in a while everything actually CAN be filled with magic and rainbows! This film will also provide you with some privacy while adding color into the room when the sun hits *just* right. Or stained glass–like window film for anyone with one of those tiny bathroom windows who is just begging for a lil' revamp. This will be so easy to incorporate into your home and, now that the sun has finally returned, will breathe new life into your space. A set of cylindrical wineglasses with a delightful Crate & Barrel vibe that'll feel like a major upgrade from the ones you somehow inherited from your older sister when you moved into your first apartment — these beauties are *yours* and will make any space feel like home sweet home. A mixed set of flower-shaped coupe glasses featuring eye-catching colors and a vintage feel to 'em that you might not even want to hand drinks out in them when guests are over in fear of one being dropped — but good news, at this price point, you *ABSOLUTELY* can (and should). A set of simple picture frames you can fill with your favorite printed photos (how chic would they look in black and white?!) or with art prints you've had your eye on foreverrrrr. A handmade ceramic fried egg spoon rest to pay tribute to your habit of having breakfast for dinner several times a week. Egg sandwiches at 6 p.m.? Sign me up, Chef! It's also dishwasher safe for easy cleaning (heck, yeah!). A set of velvet pillow covers you'll love for the way they'll feel oh-so-soft on your skin when you face plant directly into your pile of pillows at the end of a long day. They're also super easy to swap out when you inevitably get the itch to redecorate your room (again). Faux wool pillow covers that'll make you want to cancel all of your plans so you can stay home and hug these instead while watching Wicked for the zillionth time. Sounds *~thrilifying!*, doesn't it? Plus a trendy knotted throw pillow you can hug close to your chest while watching the drama unfold during the latest season of Big Brother (when it's not being used as fancy decor, of course). A mini Keurig machine for anyone who has been looking for a fun, but affordable, way to add a delightful pop of color to their kitchen counter and certainly doesn't have the time or patience to make a carefully crafted coffee each morning. Flower vase fridge magnets for anyone who simply doesn't have the space in their kitchen for a full-size planter but longs to bring some florals into their space. Polly Pocket herself couldn't come up with a cuter solution than these cuties!!! The flowers and the vases arrive packaged separately, so you can pretend you're a teeny tiny florist while setting them up on your fridge. A miniature mid-century modern LED fireplace for anyone who has always wanted one of these beauties in their home but doesn't quite have the space to install one just yet (keep that dream alive, my friends). A curtain of twinkle lights to help you transform any space into a cozy nook where you can sip on a cup of tea, crack open a book, or unwind from a long day. A chic glass candle in a stunning jar that'll look gorgeous no matter where you decide to place it in your home — and it has a wooden wick to make any room of your house feel like there's a snuggly crackling fireplace in it. To all my fall-loving friends, our time is nearly here, hang tight! An incredibly soft chenille throw so when you wrap yourself up like a burrito to watch Gilmore Girls, you'll feel like you're living in the lap of luxury. A faux leather tissue box cover that'll transform your cardboard one into one worthy of a fancy resort like the White Lotus (but without the murder and drama). A handmade moon phase garland you'll want to promptly hang above your bed — it'll make your cozy little room feel like one of those highly rated boutique hotels where your fave influencers seem to spend all of their time. A curved shower curtain rod that'll make your shower feel waaaay bigger! And, let's be honest, no one likes when the steam pushes the shower liner into their space and leaves 'em feeling like they were just tickled by a ghost. A duvet set complete with a buttery soft cover and two shams that'll make you want to lounge in bed for days (if only). Whatever color you choose will look (and feel!) divine and will help transform your room into one out of a home makeover show. And a bed skirt featuring a scalloped edge I'd like to think The Little Mermaid would lovingly add to her bed to remind her of home now that she's no longer sleeping in a clamshell under the sea. It'll make your bedroom feel way more put together without the need to fully redecorate or buy all-new bedding — easy-peasy! A roll of geometric peel-and-stick wallpaper that'll give your walls the modern upgrade they deserve — anyone who sets foot in your home will think "WOW!" and be blown away by your chic Wes Anderson–aesthetic. You can also use it to revamp bookshelves, drawers, cabinets, and more! A lovely 5-inch ceramic planter adorned with a panther design you'll want to show off to everyone that enters your home — it has a drainage hole in the bottom so if you dare to plop a living plant in it you'll be fully equipped! An ornate, arched mirror with gorgeous details to bring some serious elegance into your bedroom and set you up to make a cheeky joke like "if it's not baroque, don't fix it" if your partner ever suggests getting a new one. It's *quite* similar to one from Anthropologie but costs a whoooole lot less (a big win for your wallet). Flower-shaped drawer knobs for anyone looking to add some garden-like whimsy to their bathroom, bedroom, or kitchen — let spring time flourish in your home all the time, not just in April and May! A table lamp with a luxurious leather base to bring some light *and* style to whichever room you place it in. It comes in a bunch of fun colors that'll go nicely with any home's vibe. An aesthetic mirror that'll make applying your makeup in the morning that much more thrilling — pop it on your dresser or in your bathroom for an elevated (but inexpensive!) look. A tiered plant stand to provide your plants with a stabilized home instead of scattering them all around your apartment — it'll also make it WAY easier to water 'em! A set of wall-mounted floating shelves that'll provide you with some extra storage place to display some cute knickknacks or plants above your commode. A glass mushroom lamp because scattered lighting/creating a mood is very much having a moment right now. Don't break the bank on one from Urban Outfitters and West Elm when you might just change your mind about it when trends shift again! This one is lovely, unique, and comes in a bunch of colors that'll go with your space. And stunning patterned taper candles you can count on to bring a smile to your face whenever you glance at them atop your mantle. They're too pretty to leave sitting in your Amazon wish list — add 'em to your cart, it's what you and your home decor deserve.

Netflix wanted to beat Disney in family animation. 'KPop Demon Hunters' is its best chance

"We want to beat Disney in family animation," then Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in an interview in September 2020. At the time, anyone would say that was a tall order. Disney has almost a century of experience of producing animated films, dating back to 1937's "Snow White." Since then, the studio has produced hits that many kids would be familiar with. Think "Cinderella," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Sleeping Beauty." Add to that Pixar's "Toy Story," "The Incredibles" and "Inside Out" and it's not hard to see that Hastings had his work cut out for him. And then came the massively popular "Frozen," the animated musical that was not only the highest-grossing animated film of all time from 2013 to 2019, but whose merchandise and songs were in every toy store, Disney theme park, and car media system when the kids wanted their 30th replay of "Let it Go." But now, Hastings — now Netflix executive chairman — may finally have his goal in sight. That comes in the form of "KPop Demon Hunters," a family-friendly animated musical adventure about a world-famous K-pop group trying to save the world from demons. How it's done (done, done) The film, released on June 20, has made streaming, music and movie history on the platform. It has become Netflix's most-viewed animated film of all time, and its second-most viewed movie ever. According to numbers from Netflix, the film has amassed more than 184 million views since its release. The film's success also extended to music charts. On Tuesday, the song "Golden" from the film topped the Billboard Hot 100 , the ninth song associated with K-pop to conquer the Hot 100 — and the first by female lead vocalists, according to Billboard. In the U.K., "Golden" became the first K-pop song to hit No. 1 on the Official UK Singles Chart in 13 years, following PSY's "Gangnam Style" in 2012. Statistics that Spotify provided to CNBC revealed that the movie's soundtrack has counted over 46 million monthly listeners as of Tuesday, and the album has topped Spotify's Weekly Top Albums Global Chart for every full week since its release, barring a dip to No. 2 for the week of July 17. "KPop Demon Hunters" was released with a single trailer, a far cry in terms of marketing compared with "Squid Game 3," which was out a week later and had a slew of publicity events, social media marketing, and even live appearances from the actors promoting the series. Iltaek Hong, lead editor at Spotify Korea, told CNBC that "K-Pop is more than just music. It's a rich cultural experience built around sound, storytelling, performance and deep artist-fan connections." "That's exactly what K-Pop Demon Hunters captures, and it's why both the film and its music have resonated so strongly with global audiences," he added. Going up, up, up But animated musical movies are not new, so what makes "KPop Demon Hunters" stand out? What fueled its millions of views, week after week? Bernie Cho, president of South Korean artist services agency DFSB Kollective, explained that while the film did not have much marketing on traditional media, it was gaining popularity on social media. KPop Demon Hunters was art imitating life that was imitating art. President, DFSB Kollective Bernie Cho "The movie played into the K-pop playbook of viral videos, of infectious memes, user-generated content. People basically promoted the movie because of its originality and its authenticity. No different than a K-pop boy band or a girl band," he said. The film has spawned hundreds of shorts on YouTube, from highlights to dance challenges, and even covers of the soundtrack by active K-pop idols. Spotify's Hong said that level of interaction is what makes K-pop unique and the film's soundtrack stand out. "It's not just being listened to, it's being lived." "K-pop Demon Hunters was art imitating life that was imitating art," Cho quipped, referencing the plot point of how Huntr/x — the K-pop group in the movie — draw their power to seal demons from their fans. Cho worked on the film as a music licensing consultant. In an illustration of that full circle, Billboard even came out with their list of top 5 covers of "Golden" from K-pop idols. Director Maggie Kang had said the K-pop groups in the movie were inspired by a multitude of artists, and Cho said, "You have K-pop artists that inspired the movie, now reinterpreting their favorite parts, their favorite scenes, their favorite dance moves, their favorite tracks." Gonna be, gonna be, golden "It is a potential gold mine. Can Netflix mine all that gold out? That's the question." director of insights and content strategy, Greenlight Analytics Brandon Katz But it's not about the views and streams alone — "KPop Demon Hunters" gives Netflix "their first real, organic, mega hit animated franchise," said Brandon Katz, director of insights and content strategy at Greenlight Analytics. That gives them the opportunity to show that the platform can develop and expand this intellectual property at the same level of Disney, he added. For starters, Netflix has moved quickly to extend the longevity of the film's influence. The studio has announced a "sing-along event" for U.S. and U.K. audiences in selected theaters later in August, and the merchandise page for "KPop Demon Hunters" has 187 products, more than Squid Game 3's 139 products. An exclusive report from The Wrap on July 31 revealed that Netflix has more plans, and is considering two sequels, a short film and a stage musical for the franchise. It is important to develop he emotional ties an audience has with a piece of IP, Katz said, "because the more emotionally invested they are in a franchise, the greater the likelihood that they'll spend money on it." "KPop Demon Hunters" has been Netflix's "biggest home run" in original animated movie-making, Katz said. The way Netflix responds to this phenomenon — such as how it crafts a long-lasting franchise across multiple distribution pathways and how it captures consumer spending — will be critical to maximizing the potential of the film, he added. "It is a potential gold mine. Can Netflix mine all that gold out? That's the question."
