Supportive legal framework needed for new tech

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo speaks at the ASEAN-GCC Economic forum 2025 at Mandarin Oriental hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, —AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star.
KUALA LUMPUR: Having a supportive legislative framework in place is essential towards building an ecosystem that can accommodate new and advanced technologies, says Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo (pic).
Apart from ensuring adequate technological infrastructure, he said there is a need to review legislations that may potentially pose challenges in implementing new technological solutions.
Gobind said there is currently a unit in the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO) looking into such matters and discussions on which laws may require amendments are already being held with various stakeholders.
'We have to be prepared to face these problems and deal with them when necessary, so we can build an ecosystem not just in terms of infrastructure but also a ready legislative framework that lets us move ahead,' he told reporters after the Asean-GCC Economic Forum.
Citing the example of autonomous vehicle networks, Gobind said that in Malaysia, any vehicle on the road must have a licensed driver behind the wheel so as to adhere to legal requirements.
'When we talk about autonomous vehicle networks, we are looking at how cars can move on their own.
'We have also already seen autonomous buses in Putrajaya. The question is how we can prepare the legal framework for this,' he added.
It was reported last year that an autonomous electric bus service trial will be rolled out in Putrajaya.

From Gaza to South China Sea: Malaysians laud Anwar's bold Asean diplomacy

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Chairmanship of Asean this year has been hailed as a diplomatic success, marked by strong joint statements reflecting unity among member states, especially in addressing pressing global humanitarian and regional security issues. Even the general Malaysian public praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's bold leadership, particularly on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. His firm stance, they noted, garnered support from Asean leaders, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China, culminating in a unified statement condemning violence against civilians. Pensioner Minati Hamir, 70, said she fully supports the government's unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights of Palestinians who have long suffered under prolonged conflict. "As Asean Chair, Malaysia has a powerful platform to push for more effective regional diplomacy and global awareness campaigns. "Support for Gaza must extend beyond Muslim nations. This is a humanitarian crisis that demands action and solidarity from all nations that uphold justice, regardless of religion or ethnicity,' she told Bernama when contacted. Minati, who is also a former school principal, also called on the government to broaden awareness campaigns, particularly among the younger generation, so the atrocities and suffering in Gaza are never forgotten. Sharing her sentiments, Anni Holilah Syahuddin, 23, a public university student, expressed hope that the recent summit resolutions would lead to peace in Gaza. "The bloodshed feels endless. I hope their decades-long suffering will finally end with liberation from Israeli occupation,' she said. Lauren Yee, 35, a private sector employee, congratulated the Prime Minister for his effective diplomacy as Asean Chair, especially in managing complex regional issues such as tensions in the South China Sea. "As Malaysians, we hope peaceful resolutions can be achieved through diplomacy, particularly since China is one of our key trading partners. In today's uncertain global economy, maintaining regional stability is crucial,' she said. Yee also expressed confidence in Anwar's ability to navigate international affairs with diplomacy and credibility. "We need wise, credible leadership to maintain regional cooperation and stability. Asean may be small geographically, but we must project unity and strength in the face of global geopolitical challenges,' she added. Meanwhile, Lim San Shien, 25, a Government's Unity Ambassador and National Bahasa Melayu Icon, said Malaysia's successful hosting of the Asean Summit reaffirmed Asean Centrality, positioning the region as a hub of peace, security, and robust economic cooperation. "This summit also addressed youth issues. I hope young people, as the future of Asean, will be further empowered through initiatives that develop talent, encourage dialogue, and enable skills-sharing,' he said. Lim pointed to the launch of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Asean 2045: Our Shared Future as a significant outcome - a roadmap for deeper bilateral and multilateral cooperation across sectors, including economics and socio-cultural development. "Malaysia must mainstream Asean's values, identity, and unity, and show that we can navigate complex geopolitical and geo-economic environments together,' he added. The Prime Minister, in his exit press conference after the conclusion of the summit, credited the success of the 46th Asean Summit to collective effort and team spirit across government and society. Anwar said the smooth organisation of the preparatory meetings, the summit and related summits from May 23 to 27 was the result of exceptional commitment from government machinery and the public's shared understanding of Malaysia's regional role as Asean Chair 2025 under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'. - Bernama

AGC to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Muhammad Shafee

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Hj Abd Razak, his lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah will hold a Press Conference.' At Putrajaya Palace of Justice—Low Boon Tat / The Star KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) will initiate contempt of court proceedings against prominent lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah over his public remarks likening proceedings at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to a "Nazi Germany-style hearing". It said the remarks, made in the context of an ongoing case, constituted a serious and improper attack on the dignity, authority and independence of the judiciary. "While lawyers are entitled to challenge judicial decisions through proper legal channels, making public statements that tarnish the image of the court or undermine public confidence in the administration of justice is unacceptable in our legal system. "The Attorney General views this matter seriously as one that involves constitutional and institutional importance," it said in a statement on Friday (May 30). The AGC emphasised that contempt proceedings will be pursued to uphold the rule of law, preserve the integrity of judicial processes as well as protect the judiciary from unfounded allegations and undue public pressure. The statement was issued in response to recent media reports and a statement by Messrs Shafee & Co on Friday regarding the use of the term "Nazi Germany" during a press conference held outside the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Thursday (May 29). Muhammad Shafee was responding to a question regarding a court order that temporarily stayed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's judicial review proceedings concerning the existence of an additional document that would allow him to serve the remaining six years of his prison sentence under house arrest. – Bernama

Job scams a key issue under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair in 2025, has pledged to take decisive action against transnational job scam syndicates, placing the issue at the forefront of its regional agenda. Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Wisma Putra, in a statement on Friday said it takes the issue of job scam syndicates seriously. The ministry expressed its sincere appreciation to the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) as well as other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and members of the media, for their continued efforts in drawing attention to the plight of Malaysians who have fallen victim to job scam syndicates across the region. 'Malaysia remains fully committed to working closely with ASEAN counterparts and all relevant stakeholders, including civil society, to strengthen preventive measures, enhance regional collaboration, and ensure protection for all victims,' added the statement. The Foreign Ministry said it has taken concrete steps to raise the matter with fellow ASEAN Member States, including at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Langkawi in January and the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit earlier this week. At the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat held in Langkawi in January, ministers reaffirmed their joint commitment to addressing transnational crimes, including people smuggling, trafficking in persons, drug trafficking, cybercrime, money laundering, and the rising threat of online scams. During the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting, held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, Malaysia stressed the urgent need for decisive regional action in tackling cross-border crimes. As a result, ASEAN ministers agreed to review the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime (2016-2025) to strengthen regional coordination and ensure that its successor documents address emerging and evolving criminal threats. In the 46th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN leaders also expressed strong determination to intensify cooperation under the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC), with an emphasis on law enforcement collaboration to combat online scams and trafficking in persons.
