NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte says US President Donald Trump deserves credit for pushing the 32-nation members to spend more of their gross domestic product on defence.
Rutte's praise of Trump's commitment to NATO came in a recent interview with The New York Times where he also highlighted the dangers of the current political climate and how World War III might be sparked.
The former Dutch Prime Minister suggested that Chinese leader Xi Jinping could attempt to seize Taiwan while simultaneously urging Vladimir Putin to launch Russian attacks on NATO territory.
"Let's not be naïve about this," Rutte said. "If Xi Jinping would attack Taiwan, he would first make sure that he makes a call to his very junior partner in all of this, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, residing in Moscow, and telling him, 'Hey, I'm going to do this, and I need you to keep them busy in Europe by attacking NATO territory.' That is most likely the way this will progress," he said.
SG Rutte has clearly gorged on too many of the magic mushrooms beloved by the Dutch. He sees collusion between China & Russia over Taiwan, and then a Russian attack on Europe. But he's right about one thing: he should learn Russian. It might come in handy in a Siberian camp

Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng has advised MPs to focus on asking questions that improve the lives of Singaporeans – and not to get caught up in a numbers game.
Seah, in an interview with the Straits Times, had noted the trend of more parliamentary questions being filed in the previous term which set new records on the number of sittings, ministerial statements delivered and other kinds of speeches. "I hope we don't get to a point where MPs are filing questions for the sake of clocking numbers – I think that is not necessary and not very productive," Seah was quoted as saying.
"Each hour spent in Parliament, if everyone turns up, is 100 man-hours... which is why we do want to make sure time is spent productively for everyone," he added.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong intends to propose Seah's election as Speaker when Parliament reopens on 5 September.

This ‘hole-in-a-wall' sourdough pizza spot opens just 4 days a week

Tiktok has all kinds of clickbaity videos and one particular reel showcasing Hole In A Wall Pizza along 63 Haji Lane piqued my curiosity. When we made our way there, I swore my 'excitement metre' was at a solid 8. But upon arriving, it plummeted to a 3. If I could add sound effects, it'd be a flock of crows cawing. There was actually an easel and a little booth with a guy taking orders outside the main Haji Lane Stretch. Ah well, not really much of a hole-in-a-wall experience, is there? Chances are, most folks just breezed by without a clue, so there's a real need to get the word out! Since we were already in the neighbourhood, we figured we'd sample a couple of their pizzas. The pizza takeaway booth shares the same space as The Halal Corner, and offers 5 different flavours of sourdough pizza, available exclusively for takeaway. Do note that they are only open from Thursday to Sunday, from 12pm to 9pm. After placing our order, we were told to walk around and return slightly later. After close to 20 mins, our pizzas were finally ready, only for the guy who took our order to to collect them from the window (that could've been us). The first on our list was the Pepperoni (S$15). It looks just like a typical pepperoni pizza, but upon taking a closer look, you'll spot clusters of sambal belado drizzled everywhere. One bite in, and the heat was already dancing on my tongue. Minutes later, I was sweating — forehead, scalp, the works. This, my friends, is a must-have for spice lovers! The crust was thin and crispy, and the pepperoni was scrumptious. We then moved on to the Chilli Duck (S$15). The moment I lifted up the cover, my nose was greeted by the familiar and fragrant whiff of the lemak sauce. A generous layer of golden lemak gravy covered the crust, crowned with paper-thin slices of smoked duck, shimeiji mushrooms, rocket lettuce, mozzarella cheese and chilli. Compared to the previous pizza, the Lemak Chilli Duck had a thicker layer of cheese. The combination of fragrant smoked duck, creamy spiced gravy, earthy mushrooms, and fresh rocket worked beautifully together. This one completely won my heart over. Don't get me wrong, the Sambal Belado Pepperoni was great and packed a spicy punch, but this pizza was on a whole different level. I'm going to be dreaming about it for a while! 13 best free spots to catch NDP 2025 fireworks: The Esplanade, Marina Barrage & more

This year, Singapore is pulling out all the stops to commemorate its 60th birthday, which includes the annual National Day Parade on 9 August. If you plan to give it a miss but still want to join in the festivities, the main fireworks display usually starts at 8.15pm. The annual Show segment will combine performances at the Padang with building light projections and fireworks across the city skyline. On 10 Aug, 5 Heartland Celebration sites at Bishan, Punggol, Yishun, Geylang and Bukit Gombak will host live fireworks. Check out our list of the 13 best free spots in town to catch the 2025 NDP fireworks. The Esplanade offers unique vantage points for viewing the fireworks because of its waterfront area that offers a direct line of sight to the fireworks display over Marina Bay. It has distinct features such as the Roof Terrace and Waterfront Promenade. The Roof Terrace provides an elevated, unobstructed view of the fireworks, while the Waterfront Promenade offers a breezy, scenic experience with the Marina Bay Sands as a backdrop. Compared to the crowds at Marina Bay, the Esplanade provides a more relaxed and less congested environment for enjoying the fireworks, making it suitable for families and those seeking a more comfortable viewing experience. The Esplanade is easily accessible and has nearby amenities like shops and restaurants, adding to the overall convenience for visitors. 1 Esplanade Drive, Singapore 038981 +65 6828 8377 Daily: 12pm – 3am | | The Lawn @ Marina Bay is a popular spot for viewing the fireworks due to its open space, central location and relatively unobstructed views of the displays, especially those at the Marina Bay. It offers a more relaxed atmosphere compared to other bustling viewing areas. The grassy area provides ample room for people to spread out, making it comfortable for families and groups. Situated in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD), it's easily accessible and has a good vantage point without the dense crowds of other popular spots. It's near shops and eateries, and there is a mall, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, within walking distance. This makes it convenient to grab refreshments before or after the show. 8A Marina Boulevard, Singapore 018984 Daily: 24 hours | The Marina Bay Promontory is a hot spot for watching fireworks due to its open space, unobstructed views of the Marina Bay skyline and proximity to the fireworks display. It's a large, grassy area where you can find a spot to set up with loved ones and enjoy the show. Being a large, open area, the Promontory allows for comfortable viewing even when crowded. It's close to the action and easily accessible with the Bayfront MRT Station a 3-minute walk away. This makes it a convenient spot for families. The atmosphere, combined with the fireworks, skyline and waterfront, makes it a memorable experience like no other. 11 Marina Boulevard, Singapore 018940 | | The Helix Bridge is a popular spot for viewing NDP fireworks because of its proximity to Marina Bay and its unique design. This allows for excellent views of the fireworks display. The bridge's illuminated structure and pedestrian-friendly design make it a great vantage point to watch the fireworks against the backdrop of the glittering Marina Bay city skyline. The double-helix structure of the bridge is not only visually appealing but also provides a unique perspective for viewing the NDP fireworks. The bridge connects Marina Centre and Marina South. This makes it easily accessible for those who reside in the Marina Bay area. Bridge connecting Marina Centre and Marina South | | The Marina Barrage offers a unique vantage point for viewing the NDP fireworks due to its expansive rooftop and elevated position. This provides a wide, unobstructed view of the Marina Bay skyline and the fireworks display. Its location allows for both a panoramic perspective and the opportunity to enjoy the reflections of the fireworks on the water. Unlike some closer viewing spots, Marina Barrage offers a slightly more distant perspective. This allows you to appreciate the scale of the fireworks display and the city skyline. The spacious rooftop is also perfect for families to spread out, enjoy picnics, and make it a memorable experience together. Marina Barrage is easily accessible by public transport. 8 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore 018951 +65 6514 5959 Daily: 24 hours | | The Merlion Park is a standout spot for watching fireworks in Singapore. The park centres around the Merlion statue, Singapore's mascot (fish body and lion head), symbolising the city's maritime origins and strength. Fireworks exploding behind or over the statue create dramatic, scenic scenes, with the Marina Bay Sands and the skyline brilliantly silhouetted. Positioned at the mouth of the Singapore River, Merlion Park offers an unobstructed, wide-angle view of the waterfront and pyrotechnic displays. Steps in front of the statue allow spectators to sit and gaze eastward into the bay. This is where the fireworks are launched. Located near Raffles Place MRT, Merlion Park is very accessible by public transportation. It's also in proximity to other attractions and eateries, making it convenient for an evening out. 1 Fullerton Road, Singapore 049213 +65 6736 6622 Daily: 24 hours | | 10 best NDP songs to listen whenever you are in a National Day mood The Meadow at the Gardens by the Bay is a popular spot for viewing the SG60 fireworks because it offers a spacious, open area with unobstructed views of the Marina Bay skyline where the fireworks will be launched. It's also one of the designated celebration sites for the NDP and related festivities. This makes it a vibrant place for experiencing the event. Moreover, the Meadow is also hosting the 'Ties That Bloom' National Day concert. This further enhances the NDP atmosphere and makes it a focal point for SG60 celebrations. Compared to other viewing locations, The Meadow offers a more serene and nature-focused setting for enjoying the fireworks. Being in the Gardens by the Bay, it's a convenient location. The nearest MRT is a short 15-minute walk away. 31 Marina Park, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore 019191 +65 6420 6848 Daily: 5am – 2am | | The Bayfront Event Space is a popular choice for viewing the SG60 fireworks because of its unobstructed views of Marina Bay, proximity to the parade route, and accessibility via public transportation. It's part of a broader celebration area with interactive experiences such as carnival festivities and live screenings, making it a vibrant hub for National Day. Like the Meadow, the Bayfront Event Space is one of the designated NDP celebration sites. This ensures a dedicated and well-managed area for enjoying the fireworks and festivities. 12A Bayfront Avenue, Singapore 018970 Daily: 24 hours | | The open field beside Junction 8 in Bishan is a good spot to view fireworks because it's designated as one of the locations for the Red Lions' freefall jumps and for fireworks displays during the National Day Heartland Celebrations. The open space at Bishan provides an unobstructed view of the aerial displays, making it ideal for spectators. Situated next to Junction 8, a well-known heartland shopping mall, the open space provides convenient access to amenities such as food and restrooms for spectators. 9 Bishan Place, Singapore 579837 +65 6631 9931 (CapitaLand) Sun: 4pm – 9pm | | The open field beside One Punggol offers a good vantage point for viewing fireworks because of its unobstructed view of the sky, especially if the fireworks are launched nearby. Being an open space, it provides a clear sightline, minimising obstructions such as buildings or trees that hinder the view. Additionally, it's likely to be a less crowded location compared to more popular spots closer to the Marina Bay site, making it a more pleasant experience. The field is large enough to accommodate a crowd comfortably, making it a good spot to watch the fireworks display. Drop by the One Punggol Hawker Centre afterwards for grub. 1 Punggol Drive, Singapore 828629 +65 6600 5292 (OnePunggol) Sun: 4pm – 9pm | | If you reside in the North and don't wish to travel to Marina Bay, the open field next to FutsalArena @ Yishun is your best bet. Michelin Bib stalls join in Raffles City's reopened food court

The reopening of The Food Place at Raffles City brings a 20-stall array that's bound to satisfy your cravings. The crowds were at an all-time high as I took in all the new stalls that had set up in the new storefront. A concept by Food Republic, The Food Place aims to combine Michelin-recognised brands with food court prices. Among these renowned names is Mon Kee Café, responsible for authentic Hong Kong cha chan teng-style recipes. They are especially famous for their scrambled egg rice, featuring various cooked meats enveloped within a layer of fluffy egg. The Scrambled Egg Rice with Homemade Sweet Sauce (S$8.50) was a plate of true indulgence. The soupy sauce was drizzled generously, coating the entirety of the omelette. Paired with the thick slices of char siew, each bite was a balance of sweet and savoury. I love how the scrambled eggs were still slightly moist, adding a velvety texture as they mix with the rice. A dish like this can only be called comforting! Ever wondered what stars like Jay Chou, Alan Tam and Bosco Wong enjoy during lunch? Well, come for a taste of Ju Xing Fish then! They're the first sauerkraut fish express concept by Ju Xing Home: a Hong Kong restaurant awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand for 6 years since 2018. This Sauerkraut Fish Soup (S$13.80) features crunchy grass carp. The sour and slightly spicy soup whets the appetite. I was pleasantly surprised by the texture of the fish. It was meaty and light, enhanced by the acidity of the soup. Smash burger fans, you're going to love this one. Smash by BurgerLabo brings their juicy, umami-rich burgers to The Food Place's reopening. The Smash Burger (S$16.80) was filled with pickled onions, two thick beef patties, and a creamy sauce. It also came with a side of salted fries that were fried to crisp perfection. Seared on a griddle till a crust is formed, the minced beef turns an appetising caramel brown. So, if you're not sure of what to eat, why not pop by The Food Place? You're bound to find something that tempts you when you arrive!
