Man charged after allegedly throwing soju bottle at bus, injuring passenger in Singapore

SINGAPORE, July 9 — Singapore authorities have charged Quztaza Kamarudin, 38, with performing a rash act after he allegedly hurled a glass soju bottle at a bus window, injuring a female passenger. Straits Times reported that Quztaza is accused of throwing the bottle from a pedestrian walkway while SMRT service 190 was travelling along Orchard Road at about 6.40pm on July 5. 'The driver of the bus stopped the vehicle and checked on its passengers,' said deputy managing director of SMRT Buses Vincent Gay, adding that passengers were then transferred to another bus to continue their journey. The Singaporean's alleged act left a hole in the window of the double-decker bus. The bottle struck a 57-year-old passenger, causing multiple lacerations to her left cheek. She was conscious when taken to hospital. Images on Xiaohongshu showed a gaping hole in the upper deck window, with cracks across the remaining glass. Photos circulating online showed the bus parked near The Heeren shopping mall. Police said officers from Tanglin Police Division arrested Quztaza on July 8. The case will be mentioned in court again on July 16. Anyone convicted of performing a rash act faces up to one year in jail, a fine of up to S$5,000 or both.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte says US President Donald Trump deserves credit for pushing the 32-nation members to spend more of their gross domestic product on defence. Rutte's praise of Trump's commitment to NATO came in a recent interview with The New York Times where he also highlighted the dangers of the current political climate and how World War III might be sparked. The former Dutch Prime Minister suggested that Chinese leader Xi Jinping could attempt to seize Taiwan while simultaneously urging Vladimir Putin to launch Russian attacks on NATO territory. "Let's not be naïve about this," Rutte said. "If Xi Jinping would attack Taiwan, he would first make sure that he makes a call to his very junior partner in all of this, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, residing in Moscow, and telling him, 'Hey, I'm going to do this, and I need you to keep them busy in Europe by attacking NATO territory.' That is most likely the way this will progress," he said. SG Rutte has clearly gorged on too many of the magic mushrooms beloved by the Dutch. Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng has advised MPs to focus on asking questions that improve the lives of Singaporeans – and not to get caught up in a numbers game. Seah, in an interview with the Straits Times, had noted the trend of more parliamentary questions being filed in the previous term which set new records on the number of sittings, ministerial statements delivered and other kinds of speeches. "I hope we don't get to a point where MPs are filing questions for the sake of clocking numbers – I think that is not necessary and not very productive," Seah was quoted as saying. "Each hour spent in Parliament, if everyone turns up, is 100 man-hours... which is why we do want to make sure time is spent productively for everyone," he added. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong intends to propose Seah's election as Speaker when Parliament reopens on 5 September.
