Sandeep Kataria, first Indian global CEO of Bata, steps down after 5 years

Sandeep Kataria, the global CEO of Bata Corporation and the first Indian to hold the position at the Swiss footwear giant, has resigned after a five-year tenure at the helm, The Economic Times reported on Monday.
An official announcement is expected later this week, with succession planning already underway, the report added.
Kataria, 55, is expected to remain with the company for the next six months to support the leadership transition. While details of his next professional move have not been disclosed, it is understood that he is departing to explore new opportunities.
From India CEO to global head
An alumnus of IIT-Delhi and XLRI Jamshedpur, Kataria joined Bata in 2017 and headed Bata India for three years before taking on the role of global CEO in 2020. During his tenure, he played a key role in modernising the company's 130-year-old brand, advancing digital transformation, and leading strategic shifts to ensure continued relevance in a changing retail and footwear landscape.
Under his leadership, Bata refined its positioning across major markets in Asia, Africa and Europe. He also led the company's shift to a more agile global supply chain model, with India becoming a strategic hub for design, sourcing and manufacturing.
Bata legacy and India growth
Founded in 1894 in Zlín, in what is now the Czech Republic, Bata remains a family-owned global footwear business. In 2004, it consolidated its operations and moved its global headquarters to Lausanne, Switzerland. Today, the company sells around 150 million pairs of shoes annually under nearly 20 brands, including Bata, Power, North Star and Weinbrenner.
Kataria's departure comes at a time when the footwear industry has been undergoing significant shifts. During his tenure, Bata had to respond to changing consumer preferences, with a noticeable move away from formal shoes toward casual and athleisure styles. These trends were especially pronounced in India, one of the company's largest international markets, where lifestyle changes and relaxed dress codes have reshaped demand.
Bata India is the country's largest footwear company by revenue and volume. The company also experienced strong growth under Kataria's leadership. Between FY21 and FY25, revenue rose at a compound annual growth rate of 20 per cent, to ₹3,554 crore from ₹1,707 crore.
The brand now sells around 50 million pairs annually through a network of over 1,960 stores across India. It operates four manufacturing facilities and is recognised as Asia's largest shoe producer.
Bata India FY25 results
Despite strong growth in recent years, FY25 delivered a mixed performance. Bata India reported a 46 per cent increase in full-year net profit to ₹330.66 crore, but annual revenue remained flat at ₹3,488.79 crore, reflecting broader demand headwinds. In the fourth quarter, net profit declined by nearly 28 per cent year-on-year to ₹45.92 crore, while revenue dropped by 1.2 per cent to ₹788.21 crore.
Nevertheless, the company managed to grow volumes and improve key inventory metrics. Efforts around inventory management, merchandising and store rationalisation contributed to operational efficiencies. During the year, Bata India added 19 franchise stores focused on town and semi-urban expansion.

33,17,82,137 Cr Dispute: Cricket Board Terminates Kings Franchise, Heres Why

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has suspended the Chittagong Kings franchise of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after terminating its agreement with the former owners, SQ Sports Enterprise Ltd., due to persistent financial violations. The BCB revealed that the franchise owes over 46 crore taka, which includes unpaid dues from the 2012 and 2013 BPL seasons, outstanding payments from the 2025 season, and accumulated interest spanning 12 years. 46 Crore Taka in Indian Rupees = 33,17,82,137.60 Indian Rupee SQ Sports consistently failed to fulfill its financial and contractual responsibilities, including franchise fees, taxes, and player and staff salaries. Despite numerous reminders and legal actions since 2013, payments were not made. A settlement agreement signed in September 2024 also went unfulfilled, leading the board to cancel the deal on July 22, 2025, and pursue further legal measures. During the 2025 BPL season, the Kings failed to pay head coach Shaun Tait's full salary, as well as the wages of players and support personnel. Even former brand ambassador Shahid Afridi was not paid the entire amount owed, which SQ Sports' Samir Quader Chowdhury described as a private issue. The franchise also faced payment disputes with host Yasha Sagar, resulting in legal notices and counter-statements during the tournament. 2025 Season Despite off-field troubles, the Chittagong Kings had a successful 2025 BPL season, finishing second in the league stage with eight wins and four losses, earning 16 points and a strong net run rate of +1.395. A highlight came on January 16, when Graham Clark's explosive 101 off 50 balls led to a 45-run victory over the Khulna Tigers. After an early defeat in the league, the Kings hit their stride and carried momentum into the playoffs. They lost Qualifier 1 to Fortune Barishal by nine wickets but bounced back thrillingly in Qualifier 2, with Al Islam's last-ball four clinching a nail-biting 164-run chase against Khulna's 163. The Kings reached the final and posted an imposing 194/3, but Barishal chased down the target with three wickets remaining, denying Chittagong their first title. Chittagong Kings have seen various international cricketers like Moen Ali, Chris Gayle, Angelo Matthews etc dawning their jersey.

Enterprises see AIs main value in better decision-making rather than as an automation tool: Survey

New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) All large enterprises covered in a survey see the main value of artificial intelligence in improving the decision-making process rather than its use as a pure automation tool, a business-to-business publication firm CIO&Leader said on Friday. Generative AI deployments have grown five times since 2023, transforming creative processes from marketing content to software code, and by the end of 2025, 30 per cent of IT services will be fully automated by AI, the State of Enterprise Technology Survey 2025 said. The survey is based on insight received between May and July 2025 from over 350 chief IT officers or chief technology officers of enterprises having an annual turnover of over ₹ 5,000 crore. "100 per cent of enterprises cite better decision-making through insights as their top AI priority, reflecting AI's role as a cognitive enabler rather than just an automation tool," the report said. According to the survey, 98.4 per cent of enterprises prioritise cost reduction and process efficiency and operational agility or business resilience for AI adoption, showing the technology is valued for both immediate returns and long-term adaptability, while 96 per cent see AI's value in customer experience enhancement, as it offers personalisation, service automation, and interaction insights. "93 per cent of enterprises will increase AI and analytics investment in 2025, with more than half projecting significant budget hikes," the survey said. The use of AI in IT operations has made it the most mature use for the technology, as 41 per cent of enterprises are using it for functions such as automation, anomaly detection, and ticket triage. AI adoption in Finance (31 per cent) and customer service (28 per cent) is being driven by forecasting tools, chatbots, personalisation, and self-service analytics. Over 90 per cent of enterprises see data security and privacy as top barriers to AI adoption, followed closely by data quality issues. Over 85 per cent of enterprises prefer building AI capabilities internally, with 51 per cent rating it as their "most likely" approach. "The investment intent is crystal clear: Indian enterprises want AI embedded into the fabric of decision-making. The challenge is ensuring that these investments mature into governed, measurable programmes rather than isolated experiments," CIO&Leader, executive editor and research lead Jatinder Singh said.
