Local all-star orchestra pays tribute to iconic director David Lynch at Great American
Capelle still occasionally sets backsides in motion as the leader of local all-star R&B revue Marc & the Casuals, in recent years the busy keyboard/trumpet player has focused his attention on another far more ambitious project: the Red Room Orchestra. The ensemble was initially formed to perform the music featured in "Twin Peaks," the surreal '90s television show by iconic director Lynch that saw a revival with "Twin Peaks: The Return" on Showtime in 2019.
Lynch's unique cinematic creations have always put music in the spotlight, from the singing Lady in the Radiator from the director's 1977 debut Eraserhead and the bizarre visage of Dean Stockwell lip synching to the Roy Orbison hit "In Dreams" in his Oscar-nominated breakthrough Blue Velvet through his use of both '50s and modern rock in Wild at Heart and Lost Highway during the '90s. Lynch made music a cornerstone of "Twin Peaks" and its 1992 cinematic prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, collaborating with his longtime composer Angelo Badalamenti on original songs like the hit "Mysteries of Love" sung by Julee Cruise -- who would release a full album of Lynch/Badalamenti tunes and appeared in both the series and film. Sadly, both Cruise and Badalamenti passed away in 2022. The film world was gripped with grief after the beloved director died on January 15 following a long battle with emphysema at age 78.
In the summer of 2017 after an initial more stripped-down performance in the Chapel bar with a smaller ensemble, Capelle gathered a high-powered group of San Francisco musicians including Dirty Ghosts guitarist Allyson Baker, Persephone's Bees guitarist Tom Ayers, drummer Todd Roper (Chuck Prophet, Cake), percussionist Larry Mullins (aka Toby Dammit, who has played with Iggy Pop, the Residents, Swans and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), bassist Peter Straus (the Dwarves), singers Karina Denike (Dancehall Crashers, NOFX, the Cottontails), violinist/vocalist Dina Maccabee and saxophonist Tom Griesser (New Morty Show, Brass Monkey, the Cottontails) to play the music of "Twin Peaks" and more Lynch-related offerings at the music venue, taking the stage with an expanded group that was christened the Red Room Orchestra in front of a packed house for a transporting night of atmospheric music.
The positive reception of that show would lead the group to partner with SF Sketchfest in 2018 for the first time to perform soundtrack-related music at the Chapel. The first night -- scheduled to coincide with a tribute to "Twin Peaks" featuring cast members from the original show held at the Castro earlier in the day -- featured onstage appearances by many actors from the series including Sherilyn Fenn -- who helped judge an Audrey Horne dance contest -- and actual song performances by "Twin Peaks: The Return" star and local product Chrysta Bell (who brought down the house with her rendition of the Jimmy Scott song "Sycamore Trees" from the original series), James Marshall and Ray Wise, who stepped into his Leland Palmer character to sing "Mairzy Doats."
Since then, the group has presented additional nights of music paying tribute to the creative musical curation of director Wes Anderson -- playing the songs used for his films Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and more with a variety of special guests -- the soundtrack to the Cohen Brothers' cult favorite The Big Lebowski and the music from Paul Thomas Anderson's breakout film, the '70s porn industry period piece Boogie Nights. For the 20th anniversary edition of SF Sketchfest, the ensemble paid tribute to the iconic punk film Repo Man with a bracing evening of hardcore classics that included appearances by director Alex Cox as well as major soundtrack contributor Tito Larriva and Circle Jerks bassist and cast member Zander Schloss. Last year, the group celebrated two films with tribute nights to the 1987 comedy cult classic vampire flick The Lost Boys (complete with an appearance by guest saxophonist Tim Cappello, who performed a show-stopping cover of the Call's "I Still Believe") and the 1971 Hal Ashby comedy Harold and Maude in addition to a special evening of music and scene readings with Special Agent Dale Cooper himself, Kyle McLachlan.
While this year's SF Sketchfest was the first in years not to feature one of the group's soundtrack or "Twin Peaks" tributes -- the group is instead played a special show spotlighting the music of legendary Canadian sketch comedy show "The Kids in the Hall." However, the SF Sketchfest has partnered with Noise Pop to bring the RRO back to the Great American to celebrate the life of David Lynch. The group will perform songs from the director's work alongside a few of Lynch's personal favorite tunes in what is sure to be a heartfelt and emotional tribute to the visionary director. The show will also serve as a benefit for "Twin Peaks" actor Carel Struycken ("The Giant" in the series), who lost his home in the Eaton Fire.

Tumbarumba Edges Prince Of Power Late In R.A. 'Cowboy' Jones
Tumbarumba Edges Prince Of Power Late In R.A. 'Cowboy' Jones originally appeared on Paulick Report. Wathnan Racing's Tumbarumba dug in gamely in deep stretch to outfinish Prince of Power and capture the fourth running of the $200,000 R.A. 'Cowboy' Jones Stakes at Ellis Park. Trained by Brian Lynch and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Tumbarumba covered the mile in 1:35.38 over a fast track. In the early stages of the race, fleet-footed Frosted Departure seized the early lead tracked closely by Prince of Power and This Is Uscar. As the field hit the backstretch following a quarter-mile in :23.63, even-money favorite Tumbarumba was positioned a few lengths back in fourth but began his move on the far twhourn by tipping in the clear from his rail draw. After a half-mile in :46.05, Prince of Power ranged up outside the Frosted Departure as Tumbarumba was forced three-wide. Entering the stretch, Tumbarumba found his best strides down the center of the track while This Is Uscar squeezed through along the rail and Prince of Power battled between. In deep stretch, it turned into a two-horse battle between Tumbarumba and Prince of Power with Tumbarumba prevailing by a hard-fought neck. 'He's always willing to fight,' Gaffalione said of Tumbarumba, a 5-year-old Oscar Performance gelding out of the Street Sense mare Naive Enough. 'He is a fun horse to ride and I look forward to riding him every time. Everything played out like we needed. I got him out down the backside and let him come with his best run late.' Tumbarumba, bred by Coteau Grove Farms, returned his backers $4.24. This Is Uscar held the third spot, followed by Frosted Departure and Three Technique. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Aug 10, 2025, where it first appeared.

Locarno Says Farewell to David Lynch With Tribute Film ‘An Unfinished Room…'
The dream world of David Lynch was back on a big outdoor screen in Switzerland, at least for a few minutes, on Wednesday evening, namely in the form of a short film entitled An Unfinished Room… The Locarno Film Festival presented the emotional, heartfelt and surprise tribute and farewell to the cinema legend on the opening night of its 78th edition on Wednesday, courtesy of Lynch mentee Duwayne Dunham, who has worked as a director (Twin Peaks: The Return) and editor (Twin Peaks, Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart), and collaborators. Before the Locarno 2025 opening film unspooled, artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro set up the surprise homage without mentioning Lynch by name, saying the tribute was in memory of a creative who 'left an indelible mark' on cinema. 'He touched all our souls, he touched all our emotion,' Nazarro continued. 'His contribution to beauty, dreams, and art will never be forgotten. And tonight, we celebrate him with this tiny, wonderful masterpiece, An Unfinished Room…' More from The Hollywood Reporter Golshifteh Farahani Gets Locarno Honor From Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Calls Cinema a "Refuge" in a "Dark World" Gaumont Marks 130 Years With Academy Museum Retrospective Neon Nabs Japanese Video Game Movie Adaptation 'Exit 8' With excitement on Locarno's Piazza Grande square palpable, the movie then started on the big screen. The film featured words spoken by Lynch, discussing such things as his painting and film work and more, as well as scenes from such Lynch favorites as Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, and The Elephant Man, along with What Did Jack Do? It also included footage of Lynch painting and making music. The film was edited by Dunham, with its creative producers' credits listing Dunham, S.E. Feinberg, and David Negron. When the Twin Peaks theme started playing near the end of the short film, and the words 'David Lynch 1946-2025' showed up on the dark screen, the Locarno festival audience burst into enthusiastic applause. Dunham is also in Locarno to world premiere his Legend of the Happy Worker, 'a fable for our time,' starring Josh Whitehouse, Thomas Haden Church, and Colm Meaney out of competition. The director and some of his actors and creative team were shown on the big Locarno outdoor screen on the Wednesday opening night as they were arriving and walking the red carpet. Ethel Cain ‘Never Explored' Romantic Relationships Until 27: ‘Love Was My Final Frontier'
Hayden Anhedönia has had full creative control over the life and times of Ethel Cain, the driving vehicle of her musical output. Her upcoming album Willoughby Tucker is the latest extension of the Ethel Cain universe and operates as a prequel to her previous release Preacher's Daughter. It takes place in 1986 during the summer, warm months, during which the teenage character falls in love for the first time. The record was a way for Anhedönia to work through her own complicated emotions around love during pivotal coming-of-age years, but filtered through her real-life experience of entering her first relationship at the age of 27. 'Love was always my final frontier,' Anhedönia told The Guardian in a recent interview. 'I never explored it. I never processed anything. I never progressed past the idea of love that I had as a teenager.' This proved to be a roadblock as she delved deeper into the album creation process. The prequel, she said, was necessary for tying up some loose ends within the story and herself. 'That Ethel's entire story began with the love that she had for this boy … It felt like it needed telling,' she added. 'And come hell or high water, it was going to get told. It was practically seeping out of me.' More from Rolling Stone Ethel Cain Apologizes for Offensive Old Posts: 'Any Way You Feel About Me Is Valid' Ethel Cain, Sophie Thatcher, Beach Fossils Join Campaign to 'Abolish ICE' Ethel Cain Says She Hunted Down Synths From the 'Twin Peaks' Soundtrack to Make 'Nettles' The musician tried to keep the line between herself and Ethel separate, telling herself that 'it's all fictional,' she said. 'But sometimes I'll catch a lyric and it'll resonate exactly with how I'm feeling. And I remember that it's coming from me.' It was a grueling process, but coming out on the other side of it, Anhedönia realized that she had taught herself a lot, or at least Ethel did. 'I see Ethel Cain as a piece of me that I separate from myself and discard, so that I can make good decisions in life,' she said. 'If Preacher's Daughter was my learning experience of what not to do with trauma and healing, Willoughby Tucker has been my experience of what not to do in love.' She added, 'Ethel Cain lived and died loving and praying to be loved back. The entire Preacher's trilogy is centred around love. Love lost, love gained, love perverted, love stolen. Love is everything to us. It doesn't matter what you love or who you love, but that you love something – and that love is what propels you forward every day. For better or worse, I think that is a beautiful thing.' Earlier this month, Anhedönia addressed another extension of her healing journey after she admitted to using racial slurs in old social media posts made when she was trying to be as 'inflammatory and controversial as possible,' she said in a statement. 'All I can say is that I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart, to anyone who read it then and to anyone reading it now. Any way you feel about me moving forward is valid,' Anhedönia wrote. 'As I move forward through my life, I aim to use my platform for good, for change, and for progress. I believe it's important to atone not through words alone, but through actions.' Willoughby Tucker is set for release on Aug. 8. It follows the singer-songwriter's latest album Perverts, a standalone release that arrived in January.
