Somanath, reflecting on his association with Dhawan and ISRO's historic missions, highlighted the importance of academia-industry collaboration in driving innovation. He shared insights into India's upcoming human space programme and urged educational institutions to play a key role in national technological advancement.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including Panjab University (PU) vice-chancellor Renu Vig and former PU V-C Arun Kumar Grover.
Somanath also delivered a lecture at Panjab University under the PU Colloquium Series, titled 'Space Sector in India: Opportunities for Business and Startups.' He spoke on the Indian Space Policy, 2023, which has opened the sector to foreign investment and private enterprise. Highlighting missions like the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, reusable launch vehicles, and Mars exploration plans, he underlined India's aim for a sustained human presence in space by 2047.
He also demonstrated how ISRO's technologies are transforming agriculture through tools like Krishi-DSS and satellite-based insurance systems.
The former ISRO chairman also highlighted the role of satellite data in monitoring tropical cyclones and prediction, issuing forest fire alerts, and disaster management.
'Platforms such as Bhuvan, the Indian Geo-Platform of ISRO, are providing web-based geospatial services for agriculture, forestry, disaster response, and governance, benefitting states like Punjab and Haryana,' he said, adding that India's shift from a government-funded model to a stakeholder-based space ecosystem has triggered a wave of innovation, with private satellite manufacturers, small launch vehicle developers, and data service providers gaining momentum.
This expanding ecosystem, he argued, is expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits, job creation, and global market participation.He also called on universities to actively participate in building a self-sustaining space research and industrial ecosystem.

'As I sit on the plane to come back to India, I have a mix of emotions running through my heart. 'Having received incredible love and support from everyone during and after the mission, I can't wait to come back to India to share my experiences with all of you. Shukla, who was part of the Axiom Mission-4 that lifted off from Florida on June 25, had been training in the US for over the past one year. The private space mission, which had three other astronauts as well, docked at the ISS on June 26. Shukla returned to Earth on July 15.

Shubhanshu Shukla returns to India to a warm welcome
NEW DELHI: Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla returned to India early Sunday after his historic visit to the International Space Station (ISS). Shukla, who has been in the US training for the Axiom-4 mission to the ISS over the past year, was welcomed at the airport by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and ISRO Chairman V Narayanan. Shukla's backup astronaut, Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, also returned to the homeland. Shukla is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and travel to his hometown, Lucknow He is also expected to return to the capital to participate in the National Space Day celebrations on August 22-23. Parliament To Hold Special Session On Shubhanshu Shukla's Space Mission
As the Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla was given a grand welcome as he arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi in early hours of Sunday, the Lok Sabha will hold a special discussion on India's space journey and Shukla's historic mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), according to a notice issued by the Lower House. The House will debate on "India's first astronaut aboard the ISS -- critical role of space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047", a subject that can possibly end the deadlock in Parliament to hail India's new milestone in space journey. Shukla landed in New Delhi following his two-week long mission aboard the ISS in June-July, where he was received by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh as well as several citizens of the country who hailed his return to the country after completing a successful space mission stint. In June, Shukla became the second Indian to go to space -- after IAF wing commander Rakesh Sharma -- as part of the Axiom-4 mission to the ISS. He returned to Earth on July 16. Alongside Shukla, the Ax-4 mission marked the return to human spaceflight programme for India, Poland and Hungary in more than four decades. Representing the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Shukla's return with all the learnings and experience from the Ax-4 mission is an important step for the Gaganyaan mission and setting up the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (the Indian Space Station). In her address to the nation on the eve of the Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu mentioned Shukla's feat and said, "I am sure that Shubhanshu Shukla's space journey to the International Space Station has fired a whole generation to dream bigger. It will prove extremely helpful for India's upcoming human space flight program, 'Gaganyaan'." The Department of Space described Shukla's mission as one of "strategic importance" and India's resolve to emerge as a serious contender in human space exploration. During his address on the 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Shukla's historic visit. "Every citizen of the country is seeing the wonders of the space sector and is filled with pride. And our Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the space station. He is also coming to India in a few days. We are also preparing for Aatmanirbhar Bharat Gaganyaan on our own in space. We are working towards building our own space station on our own," he said.
