WHAT HAPPENED?
Son's leadership had been a defining presence at Spurs, guiding the team with grace and grit while being supported by vice-captains Romero and James Maddison. Now, with the transfer of Son to LAFC confirmed, Frank has revealed the Argentine centre-back as the new leader of the team ahead of Tottenham's Super Cup clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta in the summer of 2021, fresh from being crowned Serie A's 'Best Defender' for the 2020-21 season. Since arriving in north London, Romero has notched over 100 appearances in all competitions. He has formed a formidable partnership with Micky van de Ven at the heart of defence, with the duo instrumental in Tottenham's Europa League triumph last season.
WHAT FRANK SAID
Explaining his decision to hand the armband to Romero, Frank said: "I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero, and he's going to be our captain. He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season. I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way, and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team."
The Spurs boss also outlined his plans to establish a leadership group within the squad, a core of four to five players who can share the burden of responsibility.
"I want a leadership group as well," he said. "Of course, one will wear the armband and be the captain, but I would like to have as many leaders as possible, four to five in the leadership group who can help, because it's the same with me, I can't do everything on my own and need a superb coaching staff around me. I will name that leadership group after the window to give me time to assess everything."
WHAT NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM?
Spurs are set to kick off their competitive campaign with a shot at silverware, facing Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final at Stadio Friuli on Wednesday evening. With PSG boasting attacking firepower that can dismantle any defence, Romero will be tasked with marshalling his backline and leading by example. The timing to take on the armband couldn't have been more apt.

Liverpool set to put ULTIMATUM on senior player's future

The competition for places in Liverpool's squad is just as feisty as you expect it to be. Every summer, before the recruitment plan is decided for the transfer window, the Liverpool academy talents get their chance to impress Arne Slot for a chance of playing in the first team. The last pre-season campaign led to Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni being called-up as full-time members of the senior set-up and we'll see how perform then playing at a more intense level. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Youngsters are normally gifted this chance because the squad has lost a player in that position and the cost of bringing someone else in is too high. Most other squad roles are so competitive that there is no pathway from the academy to the first-team available. It's a pretty tightly run operation. Beyond that, certain players in the first team, that can't nail down a starting role are utilised in countless different positions, making them useful to Slot in the aggregate. Anyone who fails to make a positive impact in the squad across the season will have questions to answer of themselves. Gomez will be set an ultimatum One of those latter players is Joe Gomez, a player whose commitment to the Reds should never be in doubt, but whose future is going to be under intense scrutiny if he's unable to get out of his slump. While the Englishman might well be just as frustrated as the fans are when it comes to his injuries, the fact is that his fitness is increasingly becoming a problem and the situation is getting untenable. Of course, the defender's struggles aren't anything new, he tore his ACL in 2015, had extensive achilles problems in 2016, had ankle surgery in the 2018/19 season and he had patellar issues in the 2020/21 season. His misfortune with fitness has been well-documented in his 10 year stay with us. But the what seems to have been the most damning thing for his Liverpool career so far, is that since he picked up an injury in pre-season, with Gomez one of the three centre-halves the Reds currently have, the decision has been made to try and bring in two new defenders this summer, not just one. That will give Arne Slot five options to fill the two centre-back roles in the starting XI, meaning one of them is almost guaranteed to not feature in a match, unless they're shoehorned into a different place. One of the main reasons why Gomez has been able to stay at Liverpool for so long has been his ability to perform his defensive duties at left-back, right-back or centre-back, whenever he's needed. In times of an injury crisis, he was a player who could compose himself well enough to deliver for the team, regardless of how much football he had played at the time. He's an experienced veteran for us. But now that his own injuries are starting to impact him more and more - 28 games missed last season - the club now feels as though a new player must be brought in. Gomez is now a luxury. Since getting injured earlier this summer, it has now been reported that he is back in training, although for how that will be is still to be understood. But while we all love the player and hope desperately that he'll score a goal at some point this season, he's likely on borrowed time now. Having five centre-backs signifies an ultimatum for someone and it's likely to be Gomez. Of course, Ibrahima Konate might choose to run down his contract this season and leave for free, while it's not out of the realms of possibility that he could leave this summer or in January to give Liverpool a fee. So the likely additions of Marc Guehi and Giovanni Leoni could be to cover all bases, in case the Frenchman decides not to sign a new contract, but if Gomez isn't involves this season, he might well be offered a testimonial and sent on his way, so both parties can go their separate ways. He's contracted until 2027, so he doesn't necessarily have to go anywhere soon, but Liverpool's actions suggest that a decision will have to be made on his future soon and it's likely he'll leave.

Tennis duo soar to national title on Wimbledon's hallowed lawns

Kent's Anna Daniel and Veronique Vera were delighted to lift silverware on the manicured lawns of Wimbledon as they enjoyed an unforgettable experience at SW19. Daniel, 28, and Vera, 35, who represent Kent at tennis and live in Crystal Palace, featured in the national finals at Play Your Way to Wimbledon, powered by Vodafone, which is the UK's largest individual mass participation tennis competition and is delivered in partnership with the LTA and the All England Club. Thousands of players took part in the qualifying stages this year, leading to county and regional finals in June and July, with the winners progressing to the national finals on Wimbledon's Aorangi Courts last week. Daniel and Vera, who described Jannik Sinner as their tennis idol, claimed victory in the women's doubles competition on the famous grass courts of Wimbledon and revealed it was an experience they will never forget. Daniel said: "It's crazy, absolutely crazy. We said at the beginning just enjoy it, take each game and each point as it comes. We didn't expect [to win] at all. 'I competed two years ago but didn't get past the round robin stage, so this is a very different experience going further.' Vera added: 'I never thought I would be playing here. I played a lot of tennis as a kid and you obviously always think about Wimbledon, even if it's not the actual Grand Slam, just being here is amazing. 'It's very surreal to play here, also because we don't usually play on grass so it's a really nice feeling.' This year's tournament delivered over 10,000 playing opportunities with thousands of singles and doubles players taking part at 800 venues, leading to county and area finals in June and July, with the winners progressing to the national finals on the All England Club's Aorangi Courts from 3 – 9 August 2025. The competition aims to broaden playing opportunities and to inspire people of all ages and abilities to play tennis and follow in the footsteps of their tennis heroes by competing for a chance to play on Wimbledon's iconic courts. In addition to 14 and under singles, 18 and under doubles and adult doubles draws, the categories also included wheelchair (adult and juniors), learning disability and visually impaired competitions. The national finals also saw the return of popular para-standing and deaf tennis exhibition matches held during the week. World No.1 wheelchair doubles partners and Vodafone ambassadors Alfie Hewett OBE and Gordon Reid OBE were in attendance to cheer on the players at SW19 and offer their experience and advice. 'We would have loved to have had something like this when we were younger and playing'' said Hewett. 'Play your Way to Wimbledon is a massive event for someone to pick up a racket for the first time or start playing again if they haven't for a while. 'It's about being active at grassroots level, making friends and new tennis partners and that is the beauty of events like this.' Reid added: 'We want tennis to be available and accessible to everybody and get as many people as possible enjoying the sport. 'This event encapsulates that perfectly and we're proud to be a part of it.'

Slot says Liverpool set to sign teenage Italian defender but won't comment on Guehi

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed on Thursday an agreement reached with Parma to sign teenage defender Giovanni Leoni. Slot, however, refused to discuss any potential deal for another center back — England international Marc Guehi — and said any comments would need to come from his club, Crystal Palace. The 18-year-old Leoni previously played for Padova and Sampdoria before impressing at Parma after joining in the offseason of 2024. He is an Italy Under-19 international. 'The clubs have agreed (on) a deal but he hasn't signed for us yet,' Slot said of Leoni, 'so the moment when he signs for us, I can go into more detail.' On a possible deal for Guehi, who has one year left on his contract at Palace, Slot was more circumspect. He didn't mention the player's name specifically but did say 'unfortunately he was the captain of the team who we lost against last Sunday' — referring to Liverpool losing to Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday. 'If you want to have any talks about him, you should go to Palace and (manager Oliver) Glasner and ask his opinion about it,' Slot said at a news conference ahead of the first match of Liverpool's Premier League title defense, at home to Bournemouth on Friday. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press
