HM gives audience to UK Foreign Secretary
Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik gave an audience at Al Barakah Palace on Sunday to David Lammy, the United Kingdom's (UK) Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
The audience reviewed the historical and strategic relations between the two countries, as well as the Omani-British partnership that boosts economic diversification in the Sultanate of Oman.
David Lammy, UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs lauded His Majesty the Sultan's modern development policies and their tangible impact across the country, reaffirming the British government's keenness to bolstering cooperation and investment in various fields.
His Majesty the Sultan expressed his appreciation for the bilateral cooperation and coordination between the two countries' governments, welcoming the current partnership pathways and their future prospects.
The UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs also touched on several regional and international developments, listening to His Majesty's perspectives on these matters. The visiting minister expressed interest in the ceasefire efforts in Gaza and the pursuit of peace and stability, as well as ongoing US-Iranian negotiations through Omani mediation to reach a new agreement concerning Iran's nuclear program for peaceful purposes.
The meeting was attended by Sayyid Badr Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, Sir Oliver Robbins, Permanent Under-Secretary at UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Dr Lianne Sanders, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Sultanate of Oman.

UK-bound Air India flight with 242 aboard crashes in western India
Ahmedabad – A London-bound Air India passenger flight carrying 242 people crashed Thursday shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in the western Indian state of Gujarat, local authorities said. The aircraft went down in a residential area of Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad, after departing at 1.39 p.m. local time (0809GMT). Emergency services rushed to the scene, and fears of casualties remain high, though officials have not confirmed any numbers yet. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the aircraft was carrying 242 people, including two pilots and 10 cabin crew members. According to the DGCA, the aircraft issued a Mayday call to the air traffic control (ATC) shortly after takeoff but did not respond to further communications. Air India confirmed the crash, stating that Flight AI171, bound for London Gatwick, was involved in 'an incident' after departing Ahmedabad. Of 242 people aboard, the airliner said 169 were Indian nationals, plus 53 UK citizens, seven from Portugal and one was from Canada, in addition to two pilots and 10 cabin crew. The Indian Civil Aviation Ministry said it has established an Operational Control Room to coordinate all details. Massive rescue and relief operations are going on and authorities have deployed personnel to clear the debris, while the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has closed all its operations in the wake of the crash. Gatwick Airport officials said the aircraft had been scheduled to land in London at 6.25 pm local time (1825GMT). Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed 'profound sorrow' over the crash. 'Our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families,' he said in a statement. 'We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and provide all necessary support and care.' Indian lawmaker Yusuf Pathan called the crash 'shocking' and offered prayers for the safety of those onboard. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the crash was 'devastating.' 'My thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time,' he said on X. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy also 'deep sadness' over the plane crash. 'The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support,' Lammy said on X.

Uzbek President receives Omani Minister in Tashkent
Tashkent- President Dr Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan received H E Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, in Tashkent on Wednesday. During the meeting, Al Yousef conveyed the greetings and best wishes of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to the Uzbek President. He reaffirmed the deep-rooted fraternal ties between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Uzbekistan. The minister also extended his congratulations to President Mirziyoyev on the historic qualification of the Uzbekistan national football team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup – the country's first-ever appearance on football's biggest stage. He described the achievement as a moment of pride not only for Uzbekistan but for the entire Central Asian region. Al Yousef welcomed the Uzbek government's decision to grant Omani citizens a 30-day visa exemption, describing it as a positive step towards enhancing tourism, cultural exchange, and commercial ties between the two nations. He further noted that Oman Air plans to launch direct flights to Tashkent in the near future, aiming to strengthen connectivity and facilitate people-to-people contact. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 5th session of the Omani-Uzbek Joint Committee for Trade and Economic Cooperation, in conjunction with high-level roundtable discussions and the 4th Tashkent International Investment Forum. The visit aims to expand cooperation and identify joint investment opportunities across key sectors. MoC inked to fund employment programme
MUSCAT: The Ministry of Labour (MoL) on Wednesday signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) with 'Security and Safety Services Corporation' to the tune of RO 1,207,300 to provide employment-linked training for 923 Omani job-seekers. The MoC was signed by Sayyid Salim bin Musallam al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Labour for Human Resources Development, and Said bin Sulaiman al Asmi, CEO of Security and Safety Services Corporation. The MoC explores suitable job vacancies for the job-seekers, identify necessary skills, supervise the performance of the trainees, check their dedication to quality standards and assess the extent to which they gain insights from the training programme. The MoC stipulates the preparation of periodic reports to measure the success of the project, monitor common challenges and propose development plans. It provides training for Omani job-seekers in the field of fisheries-related security, safety and control, and equipping them with the skills necessary to perform their job duties. — ONA
