Gary Lineker claims BBC departure was ‘a case of quit or be quitted'
The 64-year-old left the BBC early following a post about Zionism which featured a depiction of a rat, historically an antisemitic insult, which he apologised for, saying he stands 'against all forms of racism'.
The presenter will no longer front BBC coverage of the 2026 World Cup or the FA Cup next season as had been intended, with his last episode of Match Of The Day coming on May 25.
Speaking about his departure, Lineker said: 'That's what changed after that. I made a mistake and I immediately took it down and apologised, which I thought should have been enough.'
He went on to say that he believed he had complied with the BBC's impartiality rules as he had looked at the war in Gaza 'without a vested interest'.
Lineker added: 'I've got no skin in the game. I'm not Muslim, I'm not Palestinian, I'm not Israeli, I'm not Jewish. I come from a place of complete impartiality. And then it becomes about truth.
'People talked about me being antisemitic. I'm not anti-any group of people. Any race, any colour. But I am anti the killing of children.'
The former England striker went on to say he did not blame director-general Tim Davie for his exit, adding: 'Tim Davie I know and I get on well with. I know how difficult it is for him with what's going on.
'Do I dislike people at the BBC? Not the people that I know.'
At the time of Lineker's departure, Davie said in a statement that the pair 'agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season', after the former presenter 'acknowledged the mistake he made'.
Davie added: 'Gary has been a defining voice in football coverage for the BBC for over two decades. His passion and knowledge have shaped our sports journalism and earned him the respect of sports fans across the UK and beyond. We want to thank him for the contribution he has made.'
In his own statement, Lineker said that 'stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action'.
The ex-Barcelona player went on to say in The New World interview that he has toned down his use of social media following the incident.
He explained: 'Social media's changed a lot. People say to me 'when did you start having a view on things?', and I say 'well I've always had a view but social media gave me the platform'.
'Perhaps I wish it hadn't. I've come off X completely. I only use it to promote a podcast now. It's just become horrible. Nasty.'
Lineker also runs Goalhanger Podcasts which produces podcasts such as The Rest Is Football, The Rest Is History, The Rest Is Politics, and The Rest Is Entertainment, and the Leicester-born star revealed in the interview that his company would soon produce a science podcast.
The Rest Is Football podcast, which Lineker presents alongside former footballers Micah Richards and Alan Shearer, moved from the BBC to British internet sports streaming platform DAZN following Lineker's BBC exit.

Although the Secretary of State for Culture wasn't watching, one particularly riled reviewer from The Telegraph was. To show how seriously the BBC takes the allegations against the presenters, they have edited out their jokes. "Disgraced presenters might still be permitted to do continuity and exposition, but under no circumstances must they do banter. "Instead, they talk earnestly about the contestants' backgrounds and the food they are cooking. It is an intriguing idea, that after a scandal you could still be Ernie but not Eric. "Given the normal level of wit on display, not having Wallace and Torode's jokes might have been a mercy, but the result is oddly flat. MasterChef is well-suited to being craftily chopped up, as the drama is usually constructed in the edit anyway, but the new series lacks pizzazz. More info Vincent Simone, the 46-year-old dancer who graced the BBC 's Saturday night staple Strictly Come Dancing from 2006 to 2012, anticipates that the show will continue to air for at least another decade. The programme, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, has amassed immense popularity and Vincent believes this will ensure its longevity on our screens. In an exclusive chat with BANG Showbiz, Vincent confidently stated: "I think it will carry on for at least another 10 years. I mean, I don't see why not. "We meet all the Strictly fans who come and see our own shows and they just love it too much. It's the best excuse to get together, families or friends, a bunch of ladies, and they just gossip about the show, they just get entertained from amazing dancing or, you know, fit celebrities." (Image: BBC) He continued: "There is everything in that show and every year you have the variety because you get 16 new celebrities joining the show so it's going to be fresh. You can't say, 'Oh it's always the same thing', yes, they might do the same dances but every person is so individual, especially when they have character and personality. "It's an amazing show. I can't see it ever ending but I will say at least another 10 years just by meeting the fans at the stage door afterwards, they're just obsessed with the show. They will always watch it, no matter what." Vincent believed the timing was perfect to depart Strictly when he announced his exit in 2013 but disclosed that he would welcome a comeback to the programme, especially after witnessing his mate Ian Waite flourish on Dancing with the Stars - the Australian edition of the show, reports the Mirror. The Italian performer explained: "When I left, I thought that was the right time. I was super busy and it go the point where it was seven years in a row, it got to the point where I just needed a change. I did get my change with West End shows and so many other things. "I think now with age, like Ian is taking part in the Australian version. He loves it, he's doing really well. When you watch him dancing with these celebrities on the Australian version you think, 'Oh my gosh'. For me, because he's my friend, but for me he still has it. He could easily be on Strictly the UK version and I like to think that I could do the same because I could bring my personality and my dancing. So I wouldn't mind that as a challenge at some point." JB Gill drops HUGE hint that JLS star has signed up for Strictly
JB Gill has dropped a huge hint that a JLS star has signed up for Strictly, as he opened up on the new series. The 38-year-old was a finalist in the popular BBC series last year, being pipped to the post by comedian Chris McCausland. 5 5 5 Now, JB has opened up to The Sun about the new series, telling us that he actually knows a couple of the contestants. The star said: 'Without spoiling anything for anyone, I actually know a couple of the contestants who are going to be on it.' Quizzed as to whether or not they'd be his JLS bandmembers, JB went on: 'Well I don't think Oritsé is doing it, and Marv would do it but he'd probably forget his routine by the time it got round to Saturday.' There has been a lot of speculation as to whether or not the remaining two JLS stars will take part, with both Marvin Humes and Oritsé Williams yet to do the show. Aston Merrygold took part in 2017 and was partnered with Janette Manrara. He was considered a favourite to win, but was shockingly eliminated in week seven. JB expressed his disbelief that it had nearly been a year since he'd taken part in the dance contest, with it set to return in the autumn. Speaking on behalf of car insurance brand Tempcover, JB continued: 'I'd encourage people to have fun on the show as ultimately that's what it's all about. It is a competition, yes, but you're learning a new skill and it helps not to take it too seriously. 'You're never going to be a professional in the amount of time you've got to learn the style of routine and the dance. I had fun and I never ever imagined getting to the final, especially with all the challenges I had last year.' JB took to the dancefloor with Lauren Oakley in the end, despite initially being partnered with Amy Dowden. But yeah, it's great working with Tempcover, because everyone plays it differently and certainly over the years when I first started driving I played shotgun with my mates and the JLS boys too.'
