Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez made headlines on April 16 with a candid fan interaction on X, criticising political interference in the Pakistan Cricket Board and backing both rising stars and senior players as the national side navigates turbulent times.
During an open Q&A with fans, Hafeez addressed multiple issues facing Pakistan cricket, including board appointments, team selection, emerging players and the national team's direction.
Responding to a question about political influence in cricketing decisions, Hafeez remarked, 'The PCB chairman's appointment is always based on political background… I don't know about the rest,' hinting at the entrenched politicisation of leadership roles within the board.

On his own absence from coaching or mentoring roles within the PCB, the former team director replied with a cheeky nod to political phrasing: 'M minus one at the moment, and M loving it.'
Hafeez praised young batters Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub, calling them future stars. 'Abdullah Shafiq & Saim Ayub are future of Pakistan cricket. May they stay away from all distractions,' he posted.

Addressing Pakistan's inconsistent form, Hafeez reaffirmed his unwavering support. 'It hurts as a fan when Pakistan doesn't do well, but I support them unconditionally and always want the team to succeed.'
Asked about Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan's place in the squad, Hafeez defended their value. 'Babar and Rizwan are quality players… They just need to upgrade their approach and skills to become more impactful. They have the talent to do that.'
Look @babarazam258 & @iMRizwanPak are quality players & have played a super role as players to win matches for Pakistan. All they need to upgrade their approach & skills to become more impactful. They have talent to do that. https://t.co/AMnnH031lL — Mohammad Hafeez (@MHafeez22) April 16, 2025
In response to recent mockery of Rizwan's English-speaking skills, Hafeez responded firmly. 'Sad to see people shaming a star for his language ability. Very sad,' he wrote.
When asked what advice he would give to Babar Azam, Hafeez offered a concise note: 'Keep learning.'
Looking ahead to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, Hafeez named Saim Ayub among his picks for the opening slot, underscoring his belief in the youngster's long-term potential.

The professor also had some choice words for the much-maligned selection committee of the PCB, criticising their approach to player selection.
He stated that Pakistan cricket, as a whole, need to promote all-rounders.
Unfortunately our system at selection times don't promote all round ability & take trials only for specialist roles. We need to promote more all rounders if available https://t.co/RcatyCgc7Z — Mohammad Hafeez (@MHafeez22) April 16, 2025
Hafeez has been an outspoken figure on Pakistan cricket ever since his international retirement in 2021. He made headlines with his comments on 90s players and their criticism of current Pakistani team, claiming they left 'no legacy' behind.
The session offered fans a glimpse into Hafeez's unfiltered views, showing both his humour and concern for the direction of Pakistan cricket.

Australia's Hazlewood does not want to miss WTC final again

LONDON: A calf injury forced Josh Hazlewood to miss being part of Australia's World Test Championship win two years ago and the fast bowler is keen to avoid a second such heartbreak as they defend their WTC title next week. Hazlewood is vying with Scott Boland to claim the last slot in Australia's pace attack for the final against South Africa at Lord's from Wednesday. South Africa name Rabada in World Test Championship final squad The 34-year-old arrived late in England, after bowling Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title on Tuesday. 'I was quite close last time,' Hazlewood, who recently recovered from a should injury, said of the 2023 final he missed. 'But I feel in much better place this time around, and I think in any format, my numbers over the last two years have been pretty good, so I've got a lot to fall back on. 'Skill wise, I still feel like I'm bowling the best I have in my career and it's just a matter of the body holding up, which it has been in the last few months.' Pakistan to receive $0.48mn despite finishing last in ICC World Test Championship cycle Hazlewood was Bengaluru's most successful bowler in the IPL but he will need to shift from 20-overs cricket in India to a different format and the different English conditions. Adjusting the length would be particularly crucial, he said. 'In the IPL games, I was probably hitting around that seven-to nine-meters in the powerplay, and not really threatening the stumps as much as you want to in Test cricket, in particular here in England,' he said. 'So, it'll just be about pushing that length and touch fuller and still getting that zip through the keeper.'

Pak to make two changes for BD tour

The Pakistan team is expected to have two new additions for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series, which is likely to take place in July. According to reports, left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi and spinner Sufiyan Muqeem are likely to return to the national side. Shaheen last featured in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand in March this year, where his performance was below expectations — taking just two wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 10.23. Sufiyan, who also played in the same series, appeared in only one match but impressed with two wickets at a remarkable economy rate of just 3.00. Meanwhile, the door remains open for star batter Babar Azam regarding his inclusion in the national squad, as he has reportedly been assured of future opportunities. The preliminary schedule for Pakistan's T20I tour of Bangladesh has been finalised, with the team expected to arrive in Dhaka on July 18, sources confirmed on June 1. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has drafted the initial itinerary and shared it with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The T20I series will commence on July 20, followed by the second and third matches on July 22 and 24, respectively. All three matches are scheduled to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. This tour is not part of the ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP). The series was arranged following discussions between senior officials of the PCB and BCB on the sidelines of the ICC Champions Trophy preparations, which Pakistan is set to host later this year. For context, Pakistan's white-ball team recently entered a new chapter under the leadership of Mike Hesson, the former New Zealand coach. The 50-year-old made an immediate impact, guiding the team to a 3-0 T20I series whitewash over Bangladesh - Pakistan's first home series victory since December 2021. Hesson holds in-depth discussion with Shaheen The second day of the national training camp in Lahore saw seven players participate in the Wednesday morning session, including Shaheen Shah Afridi, Abdullah Shafique, Mehran Mumtaz, Khurram Shehzad, Haider Ali, Khawaja Nafi, and Ahmad Daniyal. Additional training also took place during the afternoon session, under the supervision of head coach Mike Hesson and the coaching staff specialising in bowling, batting, and fielding. According to sources, fast bowler Shaheen Afridi did not participate in ground drills. Having returned from abroad after the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Afridi arrived in Lahore on Wednesday morning, specifically to meet head coach Mike Hesson. The two held an in-depth discussion regarding future plans for the team. In a social media post, Mike Hesson expressed his satisfaction with the session at the National Cricket Academy, calling it an important opportunity for both coaches and players to familiarize themselves with one another. He shared images from the training session, emphasising its significance in building rapport within the squad. Babar Azam had attended the opening day of the camp, while Mohammad Rizwan will join on the final day. The three-day camp, involving 22 of Pakistan's top white-ball cricketers, commenced at the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) Ground, as announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday. Players were divided into three groups, reporting to camp on June 3, 4 and 5, respectively. The first group—comprising Babar Azam, Abbas Afridi, Saud Shakeel, Salman Mirza, Shahid Aziz, and Usman Khan—took part in various sessions on Tuesday under the guidance of the national team management, led by Hesson. According to sources, the PCB is using the camp to inform players about the team's future direction, while also assessing their fitness levels and recent performances. Furthermore, head coach Hesson is scheduled to meet with top-performing players individually to discuss the roadmap ahead for Pakistan's white-ball squad. Pakistan's white-ball team recently entered a new chapter under the leadership of Hesson, the former New Zealand coach. The 50-year-old made an immediate impact, guiding the team to a 3-0 T20I series whitewash against Bangladesh — Pakistan's first home series victory since December 2021. Following this series win, the team is expected to take a brief break before potentially returning to Bangladesh next month for another T20I series.
