KL Aims To Lead ASEAN Cities In Solid Waste Management

Barnama24-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur aims to lead efforts among ASEAN capital cities in tackling solid waste management, with a strong focus on practical actions rather than mere declarations, said Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
As Malaysia chairs ASEAN this year, she noted that Kuala Lumpur is hosting key urban discussions, including the Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC 2025), where waste management is expected to be a top agenda item.
'Sometimes we have so many declarations, but we want to declare our action. We want to do solid waste (management), we also want to do mitigation, and we want to do maybe public spaces and nature-based solutions,' she said during an interview on Bernama TV's ASEAN Dari Kuala Lumpur Ke Dunia programme tonight.
Maimunah said Kuala Lumpur is pushing for a 'Kuala Lumpur Joint Leaders' Statement' among the mayors of ASEAN capital cities, with the goal of establishing an agreed action plan with timelines and commitments, which can be followed up at the next regional meeting in Manila, the Philippines.
MGMAC 2025, to be held in the Malaysian capital, is expected to gather up to 8,000 participants and will run alongside two other urban-focused events -- the ASEAN Mayors and Governors Capital Meeting and the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Forum.
Maimunah, who will chair the meeting, said it is not just a platform to showcase achievements, but also to share the challenges faced by Kuala Lumpur and other cities.
'This is the moment for us to take the opportunity, not only the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), but I think the whole of Malaysia and all stakeholders in Kuala Lumpur to take the opportunity to showcase all the struggles, all the achievements and the growth that we have, and also to share our challenges,' she said.
On Kuala Lumpur's position in the region, Maimunah said the city is comparatively ahead in terms of development planning and infrastructure.
'We have our plan, we have our good infrastructure, and then at the same time, we have the arts and culture, and Kuala Lumpur is also the hub of talent and investment,' she said.

STAR Meeting This Evening To Discuss Use Of AI, Worker Productivity

GENERAL PUTRAJAYA, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Special Task Force on Agency Reform (STAR) meeting this evening will, among other matters, discuss studies by the United Nations University (Tokyo), McKinsey, and JP Morgan's experience on increasing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and enhancing worker productivity. Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN), Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, said National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) Director Datuk Dr Mohd Zabri Yusoff has been tasked with presenting an initial report on the university's study. 'This evening, the STAR meeting will convene in Putrajaya, and I have asked the INTAN Director to present the report submitted by the university. We will deliberate on the matter, and within two weeks, provide feedback to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,' he told Bernama and RTM after attending the Fly the Jalur Gemilang programme organised by the Malaysian Information Department. Earlier, Anwar reminded the government machinery to be cautious of the 'AI Productivity Paradox' in implementing the country's digital transformation. The phenomenon, he said, refers to the situation where significant investments in AI and digitalisation do not necessarily translate into higher productivity. Citing studies by the United Nations University (Tokyo), McKinsey, and JP Morgan's experience, Anwar said only three to seven per cent of AI adoption has a measurable impact on workers' productivity or income. He said this is a cause for concern as the government's digital transformation and AI agenda is intended to boost output and productivity. However, the 'AI Productivity Paradox' indicates that productivity gains are not guaranteed despite technological investments, he added. The prime minister has instructed Shamsul Azri and all department heads to study the issue and provide preliminary recommendations to address the challenge.

Egypt Rejects Participating In Displacement Of Palestinians

An aerial view from a Jordanian military aircraft shows the Gaza Strip, before humanitarian aid is airdropped over it, in Gaza, August 17, 2025. REUTERS/Alaa Al Sukhni CAIRO, Aug 18 (Bernama-WAFA) -- Egypt has reiterated its categorical rejection of the displacement of the Palestinian people and called on countries not to participate in this heinous crime. According to the Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA), the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that it "is following with deep concern the recent reports of Israeli consultations with some countries regarding accepting the displacement of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip to their territory. This is part of an unacceptable Israeli policy aimed at emptying the Palestinian land of its inhabitants, occupying it, and liquidating the Palestinian cause." bootstrap slideshow The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified in a statement issued on Sunday that Egypt, through its contacts with countries that have reportedly agreed to receive the Palestinian people, has indicated its rejection of these reprehensible plans. Egypt reiterated its categorical rejection of any Israeli plans aimed at displacing the Palestinian people from their historic land, whether in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, under any pretext, justification, or label, whether the displacement is forced or "voluntary" through policies of starvation, land confiscation, settlement, and making life impossible on Palestinian land. Egypt also affirmed that it will not accept or participate in such displacement, considering it a historical injustice with no moral or legal justification. It will not allow it, as it will inevitably lead to the liquidation of the Palestinian cause. It called on all peace-loving countries of the world to refrain from involvement in this immoral crime, which contravenes all principles of international humanitarian law, constitutes a war crime and ethnic cleansing, and represents a clear violation of the four Geneva Conventions. It also warned of the historical and legal responsibility that will fall on any party involved in this heinous crime, and the political consequences and repercussions it may have with regional and international dimensions. -- BERNAMA-WAFA
