Before Pahalgam attack, intel warned of possible tourist targeting: Officials

India Today04-05-2025

Days before the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, intelligence agencies had flagged the potential targeting of tourists especially those staying in hotels on the outskirts of Srinagar in the foothills of the Zabarwan range, officials in the know said Saturday. This prompted a heightened security presence in these areas with top police brass camping in Srinagar to oversee combing operations around Dachigam, Nishat, and adjacent areas.advertisementThese areas gained attention and security forces increased patrolling because of a terrorist attack on a construction site in Gangangir, Sonamarg in October last year in which seven people including a doctor were killed. The area is located on the other side of Zabarwan range overlooking the Srinagar city.
Despite a two-week operation, security forces conducted extensive searches on the outskirts of Srinagar based on the intelligence, but these efforts did not yield any breakthroughs and the operation was called off on April 22, the day when terrorists targeted tourists in Pahalgam area killing 26 of them. There were inputs to suggest that terrorists wanted to carry out such nefarious designs during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier last month to flag off the first train from Katra to Srinagar.advertisementDefinitely, Pakistan is not happy over the impending railway link that aims to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, the officials cited above said. However, they said the visit of the prime minister, earlier scheduled for April 19, was postponed due to adverse weather forecasts predicting high-speed winds in the Katra area. The officials made it clear that while weather conditions are the sole reason for the postponement, fresh inauguration dates are expected to be announced soon. The state and non-state actors sitting across the border never want the powerful visuals of flagging off the first train to get international attention and hence may have planned to overshadow the event with such barbaric killings, the officials said.On the Pahalgam attack, the officials said what is emerging was that two local terrorists had already mingled with the tourists and as soon as the first shots were fired, they herded the tourists to a food court complex, where two other terrorists, reportedly Pakistanis, fired and killed 26 of them. The aim of the attack seems to be creating fear among the citizens and possibly to lead to retribution attacks against Kashmiris elsewhere in the country, sources said. But quick action by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who talked to top brass in New Delhi, prompted the directions being given to state governments to make sure the Kashmiri locals in their respective states were safe, they said.advertisementThe officials have also reported a worrisome trend in the type of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir following the recovery of advanced weaponry like M-series rifles, sniper rifles, and armour-piercing bullets from encounter locations more and more, which are suspected to be leftover weapons and ammunition of NATO troops in Afghanistan. The authorities also warned against depending on the tourist arrivals in Jammu and Kashmir solely as a marker of peace and noted the case of former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who had used tourist arrivals as an index of normalcy in the past.Shortly after this statement, in May 2006, four tourists were killed, and six others injured when terrorists attacked a bus carrying tourists from Gujarat in Srinagar as it was reaching the Mughal Gardens.According to the officials, in a conflict zone, tourism should primarily be viewed as an economic activity rather than a barometer for gauging normalcy.Regarding reports about Baisaran not being granted clearance for opening to tourists, officials clarified that the area remains accessible throughout the year, except during the Amarnath Yatra or periods of heavy snowfall.advertisementThe Jammu and Kashmir administration had, in fact, issued a tender for Baisaran, which was awarded to an individual from South Kashmir last August for a three-year period at a cost of Rs 3 crore. The entire Baisaran meadow has since been fenced, and even a zipline facility has been established. On the practice of blasting houses, recently used in counter-terrorism operations, the officials said it had been halted at the request of the elected government of Jammu and Kashmir.New Delhi was advised to take note of the spontaneous protests in the entire Kashmir valley in the aftermath of Pahalgam killings on April 22 which were reminiscent of the public movements seen during the Nirbhaya case in New Delhi.Tune InMust Watch

"India following zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism": Rajnath Singh highlights Op Sindoor, calls for global unity

New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday asserted that India has demonstrated a successful strategy to defeat terrorism, laying out five key positions on how the global community can uproot such activities, and assured retaliation against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism while showing zero tolerance against this menace. In an article titled 'We've shown how to defeat terror,' published in an English Daily, Singh reflects on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India's subsequent response through Operation Sindoor, emphasising the nation's resolve under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'Under the leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi, India is following a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. Fighting against terror is not optional but it's our collective duty. It's high time the global community unites to uproot this menace from its roots. Read my article... where I reflect on India's fight against terror and the path forward for the world,' the Defence Minister stated in a post on X. In another post, he further added that terrorism was a whip to humanity, referencing another article published in another Hindi Daily, noting the need for global unity and measures to take effective action against terrorism. 'Terrorism is a scourge on humanity. India's stand under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very clear, and that is of zero tolerance. In my article... I have stressed the need for global unity against terrorism and discussed the measures available to the global community to take effective action against terrorism,' Singh stated in another post on X. In the early hours of May 7, Indian Armed Forces successfully hit nine terror camps using special precision munitions in a coordinated operation called Operation Sindoor, destroying four camps in Pakistan, including Bahawalpur and Muridke, and five in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The strikes on all nine targets were successful, which targeted top Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) leaders involved in sponsoring terrorist activities in India. Following the attack, intense clashes took place between India and Pakistan, with Pakistan's attempted drone attacks on Indian cities along the International Border and Line of Control (LoC) and shelling along the LoC. India also retaliated with targeted strikes on Pakistani military installations, causing significant damage. After which, a cessation of hostilities between the two nations was agreed on May 10. J-K: A month after Operation Sindoor, residents in Samba return to work; situation calm on border

Samba (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 7 (ANI): As a month has gone by since 'Operation Sindoor', residents in Samba expressed faith in the Indian Army and said that the situation was peaceful at present and people have returned to work. A resident in Samba said, 'We are living 2 km away from the border. We have faced severe losses, and parts of drone entered our kitchen. Our windows were shattered. Now there is peace. Earlier, we were extremely frightened. PM Modi has provided a lot of benefits. He has announced the formation of new border battalions for Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, there was continuous shelling. We will be extremely relieved once PM Modi provides us with bunkers.' He further said that they had full confidence in the Indian Army and all the drones were neutralised. 'Now the people have started working in the fields again. There is no fear,' he added. Another resident living 3 km away from the border said that the situation is now very peaceful. 'The Indian Army and BSF had destroyed the drones in the air. Now, development work is in progress. People have started working in fields,' he added. Another resident said that the terrorists' launch pad should also be dismantled in future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that Pakistan 'saw its doomsday' on the night of May 6 during Operation Sindoor, a deep strike mission that he said left the Pakistan Army and terrorists stunned. Addressing a public gathering in J-K's Reasi, PM Modi said, 'Remember, exactly one month ago, on the night of May 6, Pakistan saw its doomsday. Now, whenever Pakistan hears the name of Operation Sindoor, it will remember its shameful defeat. The Pakistani Army and terrorists had never thought that India would attack terrorists hundreds of kilometres inside Pakistan in such a way.' He said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the strength of Aatmnirbhar Bharat and praised the armed forces for their trust in 'Make in India.' 'You have seen how Operation Sindoor has shown the power of Aatmnirbhar Bharat. Today, the world is discussing India's defence ecosystem. There is only one reason behind this. Our army's trust in Make in India. Every Indian has to repeat what the army has done,' he said. He also urged the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to actively participate in Mission Manufacturing, announced in this year's Budget. 'I want to ask the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to join this mission. Your ideas and skills will take India's economy and security to new heights,' he said. The Prime Minister also announced financial assistance for families affected by border shelling. He said houses fully damaged by cross-border shelling would receive Rs 2 lakh, while partially damaged houses would be given Rs 1 lakh. 'The suffering of more than 2,000 families affected by shelling is also our own suffering. Now, those houses which have suffered heavy damage will be given Rs 2 lakh, and those partially damaged will receive Rs 1 lakh more,' he said. (ANI)
