Mizoram CM inaugurates trauma care facility at Aizawl Civil Hospital
The facility was constructed at the cost of over Rs 5.7 crore, of which Rs 1.21 crore was funded by the Centre, according to officials.
The facility includes a reception and triage area, treatment and observation rooms, imaging (X-ray/CT scan), a minor OT/resuscitation room, and rooms for medical staffers, they said.
Speaking on the occasion, Lalduhoma said that the facility will serve as a vital centre for timely trauma response and critical care for the people.
He stated that the government was also undertaking further expansion of the hospital, including the construction of new blocks A and B at an estimated cost of Rs 88.33 crore.
Additional services such as cardiac care, kidney dialysis, and IVF will also be introduced to meet growing healthcare demands, he said.
The chief minister said that Mizoram's doctors are highly skilled, and the government is committed to providing the facilities and infrastructure they need to deliver effective care, particularly for economically weaker sections.
He also assured that the trauma care facility will continue to be upgraded based on practical needs and feedback from health professionals.
Health Minister Lalrinpuii reaffirmed the department's dedication to advancing health services and thanked the chief minister for his continued support.
Aizawl Civil Hospital Trauma Facility construction had been delayed due to a land dispute and the COVID-19 pandemic.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to contest general election, says party leader
Khaleda Zia, the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former premier, will contest the upcoming general election, her party leader said on Wednesday. BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo said the 79-year-old party chief is doing well and she will contest the election, the Daily Star newspaper reported. 'She will be elected from Feni because she is now in good health,' Mintoo told reporters after a views-exchange meeting organised by the Feni district administration. On his discussions with Zia's son and acting BNP chairman Tarique Rahman, who is in London, Mintoo said that they believe the election will be held in the first week of February. 'I think, considering the current situation of the country, the election may be held even before February. Because there is a pending case in the Supreme Court regarding the caretaker government. If a caretaker government is introduced, the election must be held within 90 days,' he was quoted as saying by the paper. Zia returned to Dhaka from London in May after four months of medical treatment. She went to London in January for advanced medical care and was admitted to The London Clinic. Zia has long suffered from liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, heart problems, diabetes, and arthritis. The BNP chairperson was lodged in the Old Dhaka Central Jail on February 8, 2018, after the Dhaka court sentenced her in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the then Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government temporarily released Zia from jail after 776 days through an executive order, suspending her sentence on March 25, 2020, with conditions that she would stay in her house and not leave the country. On August 6 last year, after the ouster of the Hasina regime, Zia was freed by an order of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. In March, Bangladesh's Supreme Court upheld a High Court ruling that acquitted Zia in a corruption case in which she was sentenced to seven years in jail by a lower court. Zia now stands acquitted in both the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust cases, in which she had previously been convicted and sentenced. She served as the prime minister of Bangladesh from March 1991 to March 1996, and again from June 2001 to October 2006.

Mizoram to establish super speciality cancer & research centre with JICA funding amid rising cancer rates
Synopsis Mizoram, facing India's highest cancer incidence, is building a Super Speciality Cancer & Research Centre in Aizawl with JICA funding. The project, estimated at Rs 700 crore, aims to address the urgent need for advanced cancer care within the state, reducing the burden of out-of-state referrals. A loan agreement was signed in February 2023 with repayment starting in 2033. ET Bureau Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a high-level meeting to review progress on the proposed Mizoram State Super Speciality Cancer & Research Centre, which will be constructed at Zemabawk, Aizawl, with funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Government of India's External Aided Project (EAP). Mizoram has the highest incidence of cancer in India, with an alarming 189.7 new cases per 100,000 population annually, compared to the national average of 98.5. Due to the lack of advanced cancer care facilities within the state, many patients are referred outside Mizoram for treatment, placing a heavy financial burden on the government and families alike. Cancer types most commonly found in India in order of number of cases include Breast, Stomach, Cervix, Lung, and Esophagus. While Mizoram's most prevalent cancers list are—Esophagus, Lung, Stomach, Breast, and Cervix—highlight the urgent need for a dedicated comprehensive cancer care centre within the state. For the Mizoram State Super Speciality Cancer & Research Centre Rs 700 crore is estimated with Rs 560 crore expected to be covered by a JICA loan. The Loan Agreement between the Government of India and JICA was signed in February 2023. The loan carries an interest rate of 1.5% and is scheduled for repayment starting 2033. The planned infrastructure includes, a state-of-the-art cancer hospital building, nuclear medicine block, Staff quarters, advanced medical equipment to be installed.
