Jordan: $3.6bln in money transfers via 'CliQ' in first 2 months of 2025
AMMAN: The number of transactions executed through the instant payment system (CliQ) from the beginning of the year up until the end of February reached 20.22 million transactions, with a total value of JD2.61 billion, according to data from the Jordan Payment and Clearing Systems Company (JoPACC).
The value of electronic payment transactions via CliQ decreased to JD1.28 billion during February, a drop of 4.3 per cent compared to January, where the value stood at JD1.33 billion.
Data reviewed by Al-Mamlaka TV revealed that 9.9 million transactions were executed in February, marking a 4 per cent decrease compared to 10.32 million transactions in January.
As for the user base, the number of CliQ users in Jordan rose to 1.74 million, an increase of 2 per cent in February alone.
According to the statistics, 96.3 per cent of platform users are of Jordanian nationality, with Jordanians comprising 1.6 million users, while users from other nationalities totalled 65,000, making up 3.7 per cent.
The data also revealed that the largest proportion of CliQ users in Jordan are males, accounting for 62.2 per cent, compared to nearly 35 per cent of female users, with the age group of 18 to 30 being the most active and frequent users of the service.
In terms of the nature of transactions, money transfers made up 85.3 per cent of the total transactions carried out via CliQ, while purchases via CliQ accounted for 14.7 per cent.
CliQ is the latest instant payment system in Jordan, launched by JoPACC in 2020. The system enables the sending and receiving of money between bank accounts in all participating banks, as well as to and from e-wallets in Jordan, in real-time.
These results reflect "significant" progress in the e-payment sector in Jordan, reinforcing the position of digital services as a secure and effective alternative to traditional transactions, and confirming the shift towards an advanced digital economy that keeps pace with global technological developments.
The total number of transactions executed through the CliQ instant payment system last year amounted to 83.9 million transactions, with a value of JD12.1 billion.

SRTA launches proactive plan for 5600 trips during Eid
Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. He noted that during the Eid al-Adha holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. Al-Othmani pointed out that these efforts are part of a plan to create a well-rounded public transport system that meets the growing need for travel during busy times like holidays. He noted that Route 22 will not be in service during the Eid holiday because the Souq Al Haraj market is closed. To make things easier for passengers, they have made some changes, including quicker arrival times and more ticket sales points at bus stations and inside buses, to minimize delays and crowding. To manage passenger flow, especially at the Jubail station, the teams have stepped up their preparations. They have increased the number of staff on duty and are providing the necessary support to ensure smooth operations. They are also allowing people to book bus tickets in advance and are keeping a close eye on how things are running to maintain a high level of service. Maritime transport During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, who is in charge of transport at the local authority, announced that there will be four daily trips. These boats will leave from the Aquarium Station in Sharjah and arrive at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, working together with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. The trips will run from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a boat leaving every two hours. Each journey will take about 35 minutes. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at the station at least 15 minutes before their departure to ensure a smooth boarding process. This service is designed to provide more transportation options for everyone and help connect different types of transport. Promoting tourism Al Jarwan shared that the Authority is working closely with the Omani transport company, Mwasalat, to run international route 203. This route connects Sharjah with Muscat, the capital of Oman, and offers two flights each day. This service is expected to encourage tourism between the two countries, especially during the Eid holidays. Passengers can board at Jubail station and travel to Al Athaiba station, making stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased online through Mwasalat Oman's website or at their service points. Public engagement Al Jarwan mentioned that during the Eid holiday, a special call center will be available 24 hours a day to help people book taxis. This includes different types of vehicles like regular taxis, family-sized cars, options for women, vehicles for those with special needs, and electric cars. You can make reservations by phone, through a smartphone app, or by visiting a website. The call center keeps an eye on all the bookings to make sure taxis arrive as fast as possible. It also welcomes feedback from the public regarding bus and taxi services, helps with reports of lost bags, and answers questions about the services offered across the emirate, including Sharjah City and other regions. He highlighted that the call center plays a vital role in connecting with the community, gathering and analyzing feedback to improve services in the future.

Turkey delivers T129 Atak helicopters to Somalia
Turkey has ramped up its defence support to Somalia in its fight against al-Shabab militant group this week, following a phone call between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Somali counterpart on Saturday. Sources familiar with the issue told Middle East Eye that Ankara delivered three T129 Atak attack helicopters to the Somali government this week. Ankara also simultaneously handed over two utility helicopters to the Somali navy, as part of a defence agreement signed between the two governments in February 2024, which mandated Ankara to establish a naval force for Mogadishu. Turkey has been training several Somali pilots to operate Atak helicopters for the past year. The shipment of the helicopters was delivered after the pilots completed their final stage of training. Open-source data shows that around six Turkish A400M and Qatari C-17A transport aircraft have arrived in Mogadishu over the past week, potentially transporting the helicopters. Erdogan also affirmed that Turkey's support to Somalia in counter-terrorism efforts would continue and be further expanded, according to a statement released by the Turkish presidency. The timing of Turkey's military aid suggests it aims to stabilise Somalia ahead of elections planned for 2026, which would be held through direct voting instead of tribal electoral system. Somalia has faced a resurgence of al-Shabab attacks in recent months. The group, which aims to topple the government, has intensified its militant campaign in the country. Al-Shabab has made significant gains in central Somalia, notably capturing villages south of the capital Mogadishu last month. However, the group made similar advances in previous years, later abandoning its positions due to military pressure from Somali forces.
