Teenager arrested after woman, 86, killed while ‘using zebra crossing'
The family of Gloria Stephenson, from Silksworth, Sunderland, has paid tribute after she died on May 16 on the city's Burdon Road.
Northumbria Police said it was understood she was using 'a zebra crossing when she was struck by a black Sur-Ron electric motorcycle, travelling in a southbound direction'.
Her family said: 'It is with great sadness that our amazing mam, Gloria Stephenson, was tragically killed on the 16th of May.
'We are all devastated at the loss of our vibrant, active, beautiful, and intelligent mam, grandma, mother-in-law and great grandma.
'The press described her as an 'elderly lady' – however, we want to make absolutely clear that our mam was full of life.
'She was active, fit, healthy, and had years left to give her love and share her energy and zest for life with everyone who knew her.
'The family want to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who supported mam, and her daughter and grandson at the scene.'
Northumbria Police said the rider initially drove away from the scene but he was arrested later on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and the bike was recovered.
The teenager has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Sergeant Russell Surrey, of Northumbria Police, said: 'Our thoughts remain with all of Gloria's family and loved ones as they try to process what has happened.
'We will support them in any way that we can, as we look to get them the answers they deserve.
'I'd like to thank those who have been in touch to share information and footage with us so far – and would urge any further witnesses to contact us.'

Woman jailed over Snapchat video of dogs killing cat in Burnley
A woman who filmed herself causing her dogs to kill a neighbour's elderly cat has been jailed after posting a video of the attack on Snapchat. Alexandra Gregson was heard shouting "get that little cat" on the footage, which showed two dogs pouncing on the 15-year-old black and white female called Poppy. Gregson was identified after the cat's body was found in a bin near her home in Padiham, Burnley, on 30 April 2024, the RSPCA said. The 36-year-old, who was already in prison for unrelated offences, was jailed on 15 August for 10 months after pleading guilty to animal welfare offences at Burnley Crown Court. The RSPCA said the video showed the cat, which appeared "frozen with fear" being set upon by two dogs in a garden. A laughing Gregson could be heard shouting "get it Zola, get that little cat. Go on get it." A report from a vet, who saw the footage, stated: "The dogs do not appear to readily want to attack the cat but following the repeated commands from the owner they do."The woman laughs during the attack thus appearing to find the attack amusing and entertaining."Insp Miranda Albinson, who investigated for the RSPCA, said the video was "incredibly distressing to watch"."This must have been a terrifying experience for Poppy and would have caused her considerable suffering to be attacked and killed like this," she said. 'Sadistic' A post mortem of Poppy's body found she had suffered from a torn liver, there was blood within her abdominal cavity and bleeding lesions to her left kidney and stomach which the RSPCA said was consistent with "blunt force trauma".After Gregson was jailed, Judge Sara Dodd said: "It is perhaps hard to put into words how sadistic and persistent that episode was."Your dogs took a significant amount of encouragement before they began, let alone continued their attack on Poppy."They had absolutely no interest in that cat before you goaded them into attacking her." Tesco urgently recalls popular beauty product over ‘serious health risk' as shoppers warned ‘do not use'
TESCO has urgently recalled a a popular beauty product found to pose a serious health risk. Shoppers have been warned "do not use" the product, and return it to a store if purchased. The supermarket giant's Kind & Pure Facial Cleansing Wipes have been pulled from shelves due to detection of a microbiological risk they have been found to contain. Following testing, Pluralibacter gergoviae was detected in batches of the product. This makes the product potentially unsafe to use, particularly for those vulnerable or with a compromised skin barrier. The recall includes two types of the Kind & Pure cleansing facial wipes, which are sold in packs of 24. One is the Fragrance Free " Camomile & Rosehip + Pro-Vitamin B5" biodegradable facial cleansing wipes. The other is the Vitamin C " Grapefruit & Cranberry Extract" radiant facial cleansing wipes. Both of these wipes have been stated to pose a "serious risk" to consumers by the Office for Product Safety & Standards. They have failed to meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 or the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013. The Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria found within the wipes is known to cause severe infections in people with weakenes immune systems or chronic illnesses. It has been linked to respiratory diseases, infections such as those in the eye, and cause symptoms like weakness, fever, nausea, and vomiting. As part of corrective measures, the product regulator has advised: "If you have purchased an affected product, please do not use it. "Return your product to any Tesco store for a full refund. "No receipt is required." Those who have purchased either of the products are able to therefore get an automatic refund from Tesco stores. Recall of Tesco's facial wipes comes just after the supermarket chain also recalled three of their lunchtime favourites over fears of diarrhoea and vomiting if consumed. Three of their Pasta Salads were recalled in July over possible salmonella contamination, which has seen a significant rise in England. Included in the recall was Tesco's Basil Pesto and Semi Dried Tomato Pasta, Chicken and Chorizo Pasta, and Feta Semi Dried Tomato Pasta. The previous month, Tesco stores also recalled one of their cheeses which was found to be contaminated with a bacteria that causes meningitis and pregnancy loss. It was their popular Le Superbe Raclette swiss cheese, that was believed to contain listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne bacterium that can cause infection.
