In a meticulously planned and unprecedented military operation, the United States on June 21 executed a large-scale airstrike on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, targeting the highly fortified Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities, bypassing Iran's dense air defense network, which includes older generation Russian-made surface-to-air missiles. The US strikes included the first-ever use of 30,000 pound (14,000 kilograms) GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator , also known as bunker busters, in combat.According to The New York Times and multiple defense sources, the US operation combined the stealth capabilities of six B-2A Spirit strategic bombers, each valued at roughly $2 billion, with the precision of submarine-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles . The bombers flew non-stop for 37 hours with multiple aerial refueling to cover the over 7000 miles (approx 11,400 kilometers) from the Missouri airbase to the target areas, marking a new chapter in the U.S. effort to halt Iran's nuclear ambitions. The centerpiece of the airstrike was the deployment of 12 GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker-buster bombs, dropped exclusively by the B-2A Spirit bombers on the Fordow nuclear enrichment facility. Each MOP weighs approximately 30,000 pounds (13,600 kilograms) and is engineered to penetrate up to 200 feet of earth or 60 feet of reinforced concrete before detonating, making it one of the most powerful conventional bombs in the U.S. arsenal. The MOP's warhead is encased in a high-performance steel alloy designed to maintain structural integrity upon impact, enabling it to destroy deeply buried and hardened targets that conventional munitions cannot reach. In addition to the MOPs, the Natanz and Isfahan sites were struck by a barrage of 30 submarine-launched BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles, known for their precision and reliability. The Tomahawks were complemented by two additional GBU-57A/B MOPs dropped on Natanz, underscoring the strategic importance of that site in Iran's nuclear program. The six B-2A Spirits, operated by the U.S. Air Force 's 509th Bomb Wing, launched from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri on a mission lasting approximately 37 hours. The bombers refueled multiple times mid-air to cover the vast distance to Iran and back, demonstrating the B-2's extraordinary range and endurance. The stealth design of the B-2, featuring radar-absorbing materials and a low radar cross-section comparable to a small bird, allowed the bombers to penetrate Iranian airspace undetected, evading sophisticated surface-to-air missile defenses protecting the Fordow site. Each B-2 bomber can carry up to two GBU-57 MOPs due to the bomb's massive size, and the aircraft's internal weapons bays are optimized for stealth and payload delivery. The B-2's bat-like aerodynamic shape and advanced automation systems reduce pilot workload during such complex missions, enabling precise targeting of hardened underground facilities.Fordow: Built 300 feet beneath a mountain and shielded by Russian-supplied air defenses, Fordow is considered the crown jewel of Iran's nuclear program. It houses approximately 1,000 centrifuges used for uranium enrichment and has long been a challenge for airstrike planners due to its depth and fortifications. The use of multiple MOPs aimed to obliterate this key site, which President Trump declared 'gone' after the strikes.Natanz: Iran's main uranium enrichment facility, Natanz, was targeted with a mix of Tomahawk missiles and two MOP bombs. The strikes focused on above-ground infrastructure and underground cascades of centrifuges, aiming to disrupt Iran's uranium production capabilities.Isfahan: This site, involved in uranium conversion and fuel production, was hit primarily by Tomahawk missiles, damaging critical buildings but reportedly without radiological leakage.

US braces for 'low-level' cyberattacks by Tehran

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel WASHINGTON: US officials are warning businesses to brace for potential Iranian cyberattacks following American airstrikes on the country's nuclear sites, an event that experts say could draw a relatively small response from hackers.A bulletin from the Department of Homeland Security warned that Iranian hackers routinely target American technology, and that such activity is poised to occur after the US military operation. The message said that DHS hadn't identified any specific imminent threat."Low-level cyberattacks against US networks by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely, and cyber actors affiliated with the Iranian government may conduct attacks against US networks," according to the bulletin issued Sunday. It also warned of potential retaliatory violence from extremists in the hackers have been accused in recent years of targeting banks, a Saudi oil company and US elections. The country has repeatedly shown a willingness to use cyberattacks against adversaries with stronger cyber capabilities than itself, including Israel, according to a 2024 threat assessment by US intelligence Iran's top military general on Monday said that the American strikes on its nuclear sites had given Iran a free hand for retaliatory measures. Still, while Iranian cyberattacks could disrupt specific targets, John Hultquist, chief analyst at Google's Threat Intelligence Group, warned that the country frequently fabricates or exaggerates its capabilities "in an effort to boost their psychological impact.""We should be careful not to overestimate these incidents and inadvertently assist the actors," he said.

This CRA chat was supposed to help; Canadians say it's just another headache

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel A new online chat service introduced by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to reduce pressure on its overloaded phone lines is now drawing fresh criticism from taxpayers due to limited staffing and poor accessibility. Launched in October for users logged into their CRA online accounts, the chat service was intended to offer a more efficient and smoother way for Canadians to get help with certain tax the CRA has trained fewer than 100 staff to operate the chat, a stark contrast to the 4,000 full-time-equivalent employees it assigns to its call chat is also only available from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET, a narrower service window than CRA phone lines. And unlike many customer service platforms, the chat does not provide an estimated wait time, often leaving users confused when no response comes or when the system simply states that the queue is Ombudsperson François Boileau said his office is hearing frequent complaints about the online chat. 'It's not a surprise for us hearing that taxpayers are having trouble accessing the CRA's online chat service,' he told The Globe and the chat tool uses artificial intelligence to answer basic questions, such as how to apply for benefits. More complex inquiries are directed to live agents, but agent availability is users connect outside business hours or when all agents are busy, they receive a message stating the queue is unavailable, without knowing it is a pilot program with limited growing criticism, the CRA has not publicly indicated that the chat is still in testing. CRA spokesperson Sylvie Branch confirmed that the agency is 'continuing to re-evaluate online chat to find the right balance between this service offering and the telephone lines.'Contact centers, including both traditional call lines and the new chat, have remained the top source of complaints submitted to the Office of the Taxpayers' Ombudsperson for the past two fiscal also report receiving inaccurate, incomplete, or unclear responses even when they do reach an ombudsperson had earlier urged the CRA to allow users to request a callback online, similar to a feature already available through Service Canada . However, the CRA has not implemented the change, citing technical agency has taken some steps to improve service, including authentication passcodes to speed up call times and AI chatbots to handle simple queries.
