India to form parliamentary friendship groups

India will soon set up parliamentary friendship groups with different countries to step up articulation of its views and stand on the global stage while projecting a united political face , a development that comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor Taking cue from the recent visits of multi-party delegations to several countries, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday said he will hold consultations with leaders of all parties in the upcoming session for setting up parliamentary friendship groups."The work has already started. Several countries have requested us to establish such groups, which they already have. Now it will be in a formal manner with representation from several parties," Birla said on the sidelines of the conference of the estimates committees of Parliament, states and legislative bodies.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 23 (ANI): Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Operation Sindhu to bring back Indians from conflict-affected Iran and Israel. He also praised PM Modi for giving a befitting reply to Pakistan through Operation Sindoor. 'It is a huge thing that the PM is doing to bring back our people from Iran, where a war is waging right now. People are returning back in thousands of numbers. Similarly, during Ukraine-Russia war, PM Modi brought back Indian students from there... I extend heartfelt gratitude to him for this... We are proud of PM Modi, who also gave a befitting reply to Pakistan with Operation Sindoor,' Shinde told ANI. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita said on Sunday that the Indian government has scheduled three additional evacuation flights from Iran over the next two to three days as part of Operation Sindhu. Speaking to reporters after receiving a new batch of 285 Indian nationals evacuated from the conflict-hit Iran at the Delhi Airport, Margherita said that 162 Indian nationals who had crossed into Jordan from Israel would be repatriated 'within a day or two.' 'We have scheduled to have three more flights from Iran in the next two to three days. In the same way, we are in constant contact with Indian nations in Iran as well as Israel... 162 Indian nationals have crossed the border to Jordan, and within a day or two, they will be brought back to India,' the minister said. The group of 285 evacuees, who arrived on a special flight from Mashhad, included people from several states such as Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. 'Special evacuation flight has arrived in New Delhi Airport... carrying 285 Indian nationals... Mainly from 10 states... Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra... The total number now stands at 1713,' Margherita added. On early Sunday, United States, under Operation Midnight Hammer, targeted three key nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan in Iran. Iran condemned the attacks, calling them a violation of international law and vowed to continue its nuclear program. Tensions between Israel and Iran escalated on June 13 when Israel launched Operation 'Rising Lion,' targeting Iran's nuclear infrastructure. Iran responded with retaliatory strikes. (ANI)

Tharoor lauds PM Modi's
New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): Prime Minister's Office on Monday shared an article by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on India's global outreach following Operation Sindoor in which he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a prime asset for India on the global stage, but deserves greater backing'. 'Lok Sabha MP and former Union Minister Dr. @shashitharoor writes- Lessons from Operation Sindoor's global outreach,' PMO said in a post on X. In his article in The Hindu newspaper, Tharoor said that aftermath of the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, and India's resolute response through 'Operation Sindoor', presented a critical juncture for the nation's foreign policy. 'While the immediate military action was decisive, the subsequent diplomatic outreach was equally, if not more, vital in shaping global perceptions and consolidating international support,' he said. Tharoor led an all-party parliamentary delegation to Guyana, Panama, Colombia, Brazil and the United States and said the visit offered him a unique vantage point to reflect on the lessons learned from this intensive period of public diplomacy. He said the visits by all-party delegations underscored that when it comes to national security and confronting terrorism, India speaks with one voice. He said while the all-party delegations provided clarity on 'Operation Sindoor', a parallel, and equally crucial, aspect of the outreach was to underscore Pakistan's continued links to terrorism. The former Union Minister said that beyond the immediate crisis management, the tour served as a powerful reminder of the enduring relevance of soft power diplomacy. He also lauded the name 'Operation Sindoor' 'The very name 'Operation Sindoor' proved evocative, its cultural resonance helping to explain the depth of the outrage and the resolve it represented. From the widespread embrace of yoga to the global appeal of Bollywood, India's traditions offer a unique pathway to connecting with diverse audiences...,' he said. Congress leaders have in the past disagreed with some of Tharoor's views. Party leader Udit Raj had earlier termed him a 'super spokesperson' of the BJP. Party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala had said what Thaoor had spoken on surgical strikes was factually incorrect. Responding to queries, Tharoor had said last week that he had a difference of opinion with some in the party leadership but added that Congress, its values, and its workers are dear to him. (ANI)
