Netflix confirms live-action ‘Solo Leveling' with Byeon Woo-seok as Sung Jinwoo
The series, based on the massively popular web novel and webtoon, follows the story of Sung Jinwoo, a low-ranked Hunter who gains extraordinary powers after a near-death experience.
Solo Leveling, originally written by Chugong in 2016 and illustrated by Dubu for Redice Studio, has become one of the most successful webtoons ever, racking up over 14.3 billion cumulative views globally on KakaoPage. It remains the No. 1 title on the platform for both web novel and webtoon formats.
Byeon Woo-seok, best known for his breakout roles in 20th Century Girl and Lovely Runner, will take on the role of Jinwoo, an E-rank Hunter who becomes humanity's greatest weapon against monstrous forces unleashed from supernatural Gates.
The Netflix adaptation will be co-directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, the duo behind acclaimed films like Ashfall and Castaway on the Moon. Production is a collaboration between Netflix, Kakao Entertainment, and Sanai Pictures.
The Solo Leveling franchise recently expanded into anime, with its first season sweeping the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, winning nine categories including Anime of the Year and Best Action. In a separate announcement, global music star J Balvin was revealed to be voicing a character in the upcoming Solo Leveling Season 2 — Arise From the Shadow.
With the webtoon's massive fanbase and Netflix's international reach, the Solo Leveling live-action adaptation is expected to become a major addition to K-drama and fantasy action programming worldwide.

Will ‘KPop Demon Hunters' get a sequel?
Following its June 20 release, KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become a global sensation. The animated Netflix fantasy, about a K-pop girl group who moonlight as demon hunters, has racked up over 56 million views and dominated the top 10 in 93 countries. With such success, fans are wondering: will there be a sequel? While Netflix hasn't officially greenlit KPop Demon Hunters 2, the film's creators and cast are eager to continue the story. Co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have hinted at deeper lore yet to be explored. 'There are a lot of questions left unanswered and areas that are not explored,' Kang told Variety. 'We had to make choices, but there's so much more story there.' The film ends on a hopeful but open note. Rumi, who embraces her half-demon identity, helps restore peace with the help of bandmates Mira and Zoey. Still, the sacrifice of the Saja Boys' leader Jinu and his soul merging with Rumi opens the door for new conflicts and emotional twists in a sequel. Cast members Ji-young Yoo, Arden Cho, and May Hong are all on board. Yoo told Mama's Geeky, 'I'll be honestly a little bummed if we can't do a sequel,' while Cho said she'd be 'heartbroken' if it didn't happen. With high viewership and a chart-topping soundtrack, the demand is clear. Now fans just need Netflix to make it official.

Virgin River makes history with season 8 renewal
Netflix has officially renewed Virgin River for season 8, making it the longest-running original scripted series still in production on the platform. The announcement comes just days after production wrapped on season 7, which had been filming in British Columbia from March to June 2025. With this early renewal, Virgin River surpasses both Grace and Frankie and Orange Is the New Black, which each concluded after seven seasons. The series is now expected to reach 84 episodes by the end of season 8. Season 8 will consist of 10 episodes, continuing the show's established format. While season 7 is expected to premiere in late 2025 or early 2026, filming details and release timing for season 8 have yet to be confirmed. Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith previously teased the possibility of spin-offs and universe expansion, including a backdoor pilot focused on younger versions of Mel's parents. The creative team has expressed enthusiasm for extending the story beyond the current characters and arcs. Actor Tim Matheson, who plays Doc, noted Netflix's support and the show's modest budget as key reasons for its longevity, stating that the series could 'go on and on.' Virgin River premiered on Netflix in 2019 and has maintained strong audience numbers through its blend of small-town drama and romance. Its steady performance and cost-effective production have positioned it as a long-term success story within Netflix's original programming lineup. Season 8's renewal secures Virgin River's place in Netflix history, solidifying its legacy as a flagship drama on the platform.

Joe Locke to make West End debut in ‘Clarkston' after wrapping ‘Heartstopper' film
Joe Locke will make his West End debut later this year in Clarkston, following the completion of filming on Netflix's Heartstopper movie. The play, written by Samuel D. Hunter, explores the lives of two young men who meet while working at a Costco in small-town Washington. Locke expressed his enthusiasm for the role, describing Hunter's writing as 'deeply human and honest' and sharing his excitement to bring the story to London audiences. The UK premiere of Clarkston will be directed by Jack Serio, with Locke starring alongside Ruaridh Mollica and Sophie Melville. Dates and venue details are expected to be announced soon. The play, first staged in Dallas in 2015, follows Jake (Locke), a young gay man from Connecticut who relocates after being diagnosed with Huntington's disease. He forms a connection with Chris (Mollica), who has a strained relationship with his mother (Melville). The production will mark Hunter's first West End staging of the play, which he describes as a story about 'love and friendship in the midst of an unknown future.' Locke, who appeared in Disney+'s Agatha All Along and starred on Broadway in Sweeney Todd in early 2024, shared that the West End opportunity is particularly meaningful, having grown up visiting London theatre with his mother. Filming for the Heartstopper movie, which serves as a closing chapter to the series, is nearing completion, with Locke stating that the team is enjoying the process and looking forward to sharing the final chapter with audiences.
