Under-construction Antilia Ghat in Shahad submerged; activist alleges structure linked to flood in locality
Only electric poles remained visible, while the ghat's steps, protection wall and planted trees were entirely underwater.
Social activist Sarita Khanchandani, who has long opposed the ghat, said the structure is illegal as per the state irrigation dept's order. She alleged that because of this construction, areas such as Tharwani Complex experienced flood this year.
In June 2024, the irrigation dept had declared Antilia Ghat illegal and directed Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) to demolish it. The ghat is being constructed by the public works dept (PWD) using MLA funds of BJP legislator Kumar Ailani to provide space for Ganpati idol immersions and a walking path for residents behind Regency Antilia housing society.

Delhi HC raps PWD for inaction on Karol Bagh traffic decongestion plan
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Public Works Department (PWD) for its inaction on a proposal by the Delhi Police to install boom barriers and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in Karol Bagh market to ease congestion. The PWD's counsel attributed the delay to a lack of funds. The PWD's counsel attributed the delay to a lack of funds. Unimpressed, the bench observed, 'It has taken months. Departments have been playing football with each other to decide where funds have to come from. It is absurd. We are here to advise the department? As to where they should get funds from to get boom barriers?' The court also recorded, 'We note with dismay that despite the letters of Delhi police written on 24/08/2024 … no adequate steps have been taken by the PWD.' It directed the PWD to file an affidavit indicating steps taken towards compliance with the police's letters dated August 21, 2024, and July 25, 2025. Additionally, the bench ordered the Delhi Police and the Transport Department to 'strictly ensure' enforcement of restrictions on the entry, loading, unloading, and parking of commercial vehicles in Karol Bagh between 10 am and 8 pm, as per a decision taken in a meeting on August 19. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was also asked to file an affidavit detailing whether anti-encroachment drives had been undertaken in the past three months.

Rajya Sabha passes IIM Amendment Bill 2025 amid Opposition walkout
New Delhi, Aug 20 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha today passed the IIM (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by voice vote amid a walkout by the Opposition. The bill pertains to the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. With this, the bill has received the approval of both Houses of Parliament, as the Lok Sabha had already passed it earlier. The Opposition staged a walkout over their demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, which was not accepted. Due to the uproar by the Opposition, the House was adjourned twice. When proceedings resumed at 2 PM, presiding Deputy Chairman Bhubaneswar Kalita called upon Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to introduce and move the bill for discussion and passage. As soon as Pradhan stood up to speak, Opposition members began demanding a discussion on the electoral roll issue and started raising slogans near the Chair. Kalita allowed Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to speak, but when Kharge attempted to raise the electoral roll issue, the Chair disallowed it, stating that no discussion on matters other than the bill would be permitted. In protest, the Opposition members raised slogans and walked out of the House. Following a brief discussion and the Minister's reply, the bill was passed by voice vote. Some amendments to the bill had been proposed by Opposition members, but due to their absence from the House, these could not be moved. The bill provides for the establishment of an IIM in Guwahati. Until the first Board of Governors is formed, the institute will be run by a person appointed by the central government. The estimated cost for this institute is Rs 5,500 crore. The bill also includes amendments to the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, declaring IIMs as institutions of national importance and providing for regulation of their functioning. Responding to the discussion, Pradhan said the bill fulfils a long-standing demand of Assam and that academic sessions would begin from this term itself. He added that student admissions and faculty recruitment would be done accordingly. He noted that this would be the 22nd IIM in the country, with a total cost of Rs 555 crore. Pradhan highlighted that India has become the world's fourth-largest economy and is on its way to becoming the third largest, attributing this progress to the skills of its youth and the contribution of national institutions. He accused previous governments of neglecting the Northeast. He said that while only 13 IIMs were established in the first 53 years since the inception of IIMs in 1961, the number has increased to 22 in the last 11 years under the Narendra Modi government. The Education Minister also mentioned that the UAE had requested India to establish IITs and IIMs there, in recognition of their achievements. As a result, such institutes have now been established in Abu Dhabi and Africa. Earlier, BJP's Geeta alias Chandraprabha initiated the discussion by saying that the pace of opening educational institutions has doubled since the Modi government came to power. She claimed that two new colleges and one new ITI are being opened every day in the country. YSRCP's Golla Babu Rao demanded that vacant faculty positions at the Visakhapatnam IIM be filled. Biju Janata Dal's Niranjan Bishi supported the bill and also raised the issue of filling vacancies in these institutions. AIADMK's M. Thambidurai raised the issue of student suicides in management institutes. NCP's Praful Patel welcomed the move to open an IIM in Assam and supported the bill. BSP's Ramji raised the issue of SC/ST students not receiving their PhD fellowships on time. He demanded that 50 percent of seats at the new institute be reserved for students from the Northeast. BJP councillors begin strike at JMC-H over corruption
1 2 Jaipur: Over 20 BJP councillors began an indefinite strike against JMC Heritage mayor Kusum Yadav, at the municipal corporation headquarters Wednesday, accusing the civic body of being neck deep in corruption and holding it responsible for poor sanitary conditions in Jaipur's Walled City area. Councillors sang hymns and offered prayers for the mayor and commissioner. Yadav, an independent councillor from ward 74, was made the mayor in Sept 2024 with support of councillors from BJP. In JMC Heritage, the current board has BJP in majority. "In the current board, fake land leases are being issued, and despite councillors informing the administration about the issue, no action is being taken. This is blatant corruption as land leases are issued only after all officials and the mayor sign it," said Subhash Vyas, a councillor part of the protest. Councillors demanded that a fair investigation must be conducted by an agency and wrongly issued leases must be cancelled.
