Scots to ‘foot the bill' for Sizewell C, SNP claims

Yahooa day ago
Scotland has become an 'afterthought' for the UK Government, the SNP has claimed, as those north of the border are set to 'foot the bill' for Sizewell C.
The nuclear power plant is set to cost £38 billion, according to an announcement on Tuesday by UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, with a levy to be placed on energy bills to help cover the cost.
Mr Miliband said the charge would be limited to an average of around £1 per month.
The SNP-led Scottish Government has long been against new nuclear power and has said it would block plans north of the border through the devolved planning system.
16 years ago I identified Sizewell as a site for new nuclear power.
Today I am delighted that Sizewell C has finally been given the green light.

Speaking in the wake of the announcement, the SNP's energy spokesman at Westminster Graham Leadbitter said nuclear power was 'extortionate, takes decades to build and the toxic waste is a risk to local communities'.
'Just months ago, the Labour Government rubbished the £38 billion figure for Sizewell C, yet today Ed Miliband snuck out a statement that confirmed they've lost control of this project before spades are even in the ground,' he said.
'To make matters worse, Scots will be left to foot the bill with a levy on energy bills – you simply couldn't make it up, yet Anas Sarwar and Scottish Labour back this extortionate and wasteful plan that energy-rich Scotland will pay for through the nose.'
Mr Leadbitter also hit out at the spending of the UK Government south of the border compared to Scotland, pointing to the closure of the Grangemouth refinery with the loss of 400 jobs.
'Be it Prax refinery, British Steel or Sizewell C, when it comes to projects south of the border it seems the pot of cash never runs out,' the SNP MP said.
'Meanwhile, Grangemouth has been shut down and Westminster's fiscal regime has ruined Scottish energy jobs – Scotland isn't just an afterthought, it's barely a thought at all.
'It is absurd that energy-rich Scotland is home to fuel-poor Scots and that while energy bills go up, Scottish energy jobs are going down – that's directly as a consequence of Westminster policy, and the further squandering of cash on expensive nuclear won't change that.'
But Mr Miliband talked up the scale and ambition of the project as he announced it, with the UK Government taking a near-45% stake.
'It is time to do big things and build big projects in this country again – and today we announce an investment that will provide clean, homegrown power to millions of homes for generations to come,' he said.
'This Government is making the investment needed to deliver a new golden age of nuclear, so we can end delays and free us from the ravages of the global fossil fuel markets to bring bills down for good.'
New Sizewell C investors include Canadian investment fund La Caisse with 20%, British Gas owner Centrica with 15%, and Amber Infrastructure with an initial 7.6%.
It comes alongside French energy giant EDF announcing earlier this month it was taking a 12.5% stake – lower than its previously stated 16.2% ownership.
The total investment, which is split between equity funding from investors and debt financing, exceeds the target construction cost of £38 billion, therefore acting as a buffer in case costs overrun.

Greencore feels glow of warm UK weather

UK group Greencore has raised its profit forecast for the year after a 'strong" quarter helped by the weather and new contracts. Greencore said its revenue was 'particularly strong' in the 13 weeks to 27 June, the company's third quarter. Revenue increased 9.9% to £511.1m ($691.8m) supported by 'favourable summer weather' and 'new business wins". As a result, Greencore has upgraded its adjusted operating profit forecast for the full year to £118m-121m ($159m-$163m) from a projection of £114-117m. Greencore reported its volume growth was 'encouraging across most categories' in the third quarter, especially in sandwiches, sushi and ready meals. Overall manufactured volume grew 3.6% and underlying volume growth was 1.9%, ahead of the wider grocery market growth of 0.7%, the company added. The news comes as Greencore is awaiting UK competition clearance for its proposed £1.2bn ($1.63bn) acquisition of fellow UK convenience-food manufacturer Bakkavor Group. Greencore CEO Dalton Philips said: "The Greencore team has delivered another outstanding performance in Q3, with particularly strong volume momentum, aided by favourable summer weather and new business wins. 'As we enter our seasonally important Q4, our focus remains on maintaining momentum in our business. He added: 'We look forward to completing the value-creating acquisition of Bakkavor in early 2026, subject to regulatory approval, and will continue to update on progress in due course." Coca-Cola Company to use cane sugar in new Coke product

The Coca-Cola Company is planning to launch a new Coke soft drink using cane sugar, the company's CEO James Quincey confirmed yesterday (22 July). Speaking on a company results call for its second-quarter 2025, Quincey said: "Yes, we're going to be bringing a coke sweetened with US cane sugar into the market this fall, and I think that will be an enduring option for consumers." Last week, US President Donald Trump said the company had agreed to use cane sugar in its namesake drinks in the US. In a post on social media outlet Truth Social, Trump said: 'I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL cane sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so.' The company's classic Coca-Cola Original drink is made with high-fructose corn syrup in the US. The product is made with sugar in countries including the UK and Australia, while it contains cane sugar in Mexico. Quincey told analysts yesterday the company already uses cane sugar in several of its products in the US, such as lemonade, teas and some of its coffee and Vitamin Water brands. "We are definitely looking to use the whole toolbox, the whole toolkit of available sweetening options to some extent, where there are consumer preferences," he said. "We know our success rate [is], substantially above the industry. But it's still a question of it takes time and commitment to build something new." There has been growing scrutiny of the recipes of food and beverages sold in the US since President Trump took office in January. US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has accused the country's food and drink industries of 'poisoning' Americans. He has also described high-fructose corn syrup as 'just a formula for making you obese and diabetic'. In the three months ended 27 June, the Fuze teas maker saw net revenues grow 1% and 5% organically to $12.5bn. Gross profit was up 3.5% at $7.8bn, while operating income jumped 62.6% on the same period in 2024 to $4.2bn. The group booked small declines in unit case volumes in Latin America, Asia Pacific and North America, where they dropped 2%, 1% and 3% respectively. The company's Bottling Investments segment, which holds its consolidated bottling operations, saw unit case volumes dip 5% in the second quarter. Coca-Cola attributed the drop to "a decline in India and the impact of refranchising bottling operations." Operating income also dropped 39% in this business. Total consolidated unit case volumes dipped 1%. "Coca-Cola Company to use cane sugar in new Coke product" was originally created and published by Just Drinks, a GlobalData owned brand.
