A student of Government Higher Secondary School in Gundahur village in Kanker district, she shares the position with Naman Kumar Khuntia of Swami Atmanand Govt Utkrisht Eng Med School, Jashpur district.
Ishika, who hails from a modest family in PV (Paralkot Village)-51 village in the tribal-dominated and Naxal-hit Kanker district, said she aspires to become an IAS officer. But even now, the 17-year-old could be an inspiration to many.
Paralkot villages are located in the Pakhanjore area, where Hindu Bengali refugees from the erstwhile East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, were settled.
According to her family, Ishika was diagnosed with blood cancer in November 2023 when she was in Class 10th. The 17-year-old recently overcame cancer, but she will be under observation for the next 2-3 years, they said.
She could not take her board exam last year due to cancer, as she underwent treatment in a private hospital in Raipur. 'I want to pursue engineering and will opt for Maths in the next class. I will then prepare for the UPSC exam as I dream of becoming an IAS officer,' Ishka told PTI.
Throughout her treatment, Ishika did not let her ambition take a back seat and continued her academic journey with full determination. 'At times, I thought I would not be able to study further. But I didn't give up as I had trust in myself. It is important to have confidence in yourself,' said the teenager.
Her farmer father, Shankar Bala, said she was treated at Balco Medical Centre in Nava Raipur and was recently declared free from cancer. She will need to undergo routine check-ups for the next 2-3 years to avoid a recurrence, he said, adding that Ishika is the third among his five children.
'She defeated cancer with her willpower and courage. The entire family cared for her during her treatment and kept encouraging her to continue her studies. Her perseverance paid off, and she topped the board exam,' said the proud father.
Despite having modest means, Shankar said he would ensure the best education for all his kids so that they can have successful careers. The Chhattisgarh Board held the Class 12 board exams between March 1 and March 28 and the Class 10 board exams took place from March 3 to March 24.

Resounding success: TN kids who got cochlear implant grow up to crack UPSC, NEET

CHENNAI: You heard it right! Odds were aplenty, but they made it big. Yash Kumar and K Akshaya, who were both born with hearing impairment, are continuing to script success stories. It was sheer will power that helped Yash crack the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam, securing a national rank of 990. Probably the first person born with hearing impairment to clear the exam, he was a total stranger to the music of nature until 3.5 years when he underwent cochlear implant surgery at the Madras ENT Research Foundation in 2002. Ask Yash, the 26-year-old would say the high-paying job at Microsoft didn't impress him much, and the UPSC dream peped into his mind after seeing his father Rajesh Kumar, an employee of Small Industries Development Bank of India, work for PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi scheme, launched by the union government in 2020 during Covid-19 to provide affordable loans to street vendors to start business. 'When working for Microsoft I decided to do something for the under-represented and people with disabilities, and I started preparing for the UPSC and got selected for IAS,' says Yash. For Yash, Dr Mohan Kameshwaran, managing director and chief surgeon at the Madras ENT Research Foundation who performed the cochlear implant surgery on him, is like a parent figure. 'Today I can speak like any other person. If I could do half the work of what Dr Kameshwaran did, I would be happy,' says Yash. Akshaya, also born with hearing impairment, who bagged an MBBS seat at Government Madurai Medical College under persons with disability quota this year, is also a patient of Dr Mohan. 'I want to become an ENT specialist,' says Akshaya with a smile. Speaking to TNIE, Dr Mohan said though The Madras ENT Research Foundation started carrying out cochlear implant surgery in 1997, the patients had to spend around Rs 7 lakh to Rs 8 lakh from their pockets. 'It was in 2010 that the cochlear implant surgery was brought under 'Kalaignar Kaappitu Thittam',' he says. He also thanked late CM M Karunanidhi for bringing the implants under the scheme. 'If hearing loss is detected early and treated, the patients can develop speech quickly,' he added.

5.78 lakh children, 1.33 lakh women given de-worming tablets in Virudhunagar district

As part of National De-worming Day, de-worming tablet albendazole was distributed to 5.78 lakh children, aged 1 to 19 years, and 1.33 lakh women in reproductive age, between 20 and 30 years, in Virudhunagar district on Monday. Collector N.O. Sukhaputra formally inaugurated the distribution of de-worming tablets to the students of Government Higher Secondary School at Pattampudur near here. The Collector said that intestinal parasitic worms would cause anemia, malnutrition, physical and mental tiredness and hamper congnitive development. The de-worming exercise will protect the children from all these health issues. The Collector said that for functioning of the human body, a lot of energy is required. The physical development of the human body is caused by protein. Stating that the in-take of protein was one gram per every kg of body weight. 'The physical strength of the body is reduced when the in-take of protein is lower than this prescribed level,' he added. The intestinal parasitic worms would feed on the energy of the human body leading to malnutrition. These worms get transmitted through soil contaminated with faecal matter. Hence, anemia could be prevented by avoiding open defecation and keeping the environment clean. The Collector asked the teachers to ensure that the children consumed the tablets that are given to them. District Health Officer V. Yasothamani, who was present, said that the left-out children and women would be given the tablets during the mope-up exercise to be taken up on August 18. Block Medical Officer Dr. Arokiya Rubenraj, medical officers and teachers were present on the occasion.
