Senior citizen falls for online job scam, loses over RM90,000

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim had visited a website with the address on July 16, and after signing up, was tasked with performing tasks to earn commissions. 'He was later added to a WhatsApp group named 'Ureed 480' and instructed to make multiple payments. 'Over the course of the scam, the victim made 16 online transactions to 16 different bank accounts as directed, totalling RM91,720.76,' he said in a statement today. He added the victim lodged a police report on Monday, with police investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Alexson also revealed that from Jan 1 to Aug 18 this year, the Kuching Commercial Crime Investigation Division has opened 34 investigation papers involving similar modus operandi, with total losses amounting to RM1,426,479.77, including this latest case. He urged the public to exercise caution when dealing with unknown individuals on social media platforms.
