U.S. sprinter Fred Kerley to contest anti-doping provisional suspension
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced the suspension on Tuesday. Three missed drug tests or whereabouts failures over 12 months are deemed to be a violation.
According to the organization, a whereabouts failure occurs when athletes fail to provide, or update, their location to be reached for out-of-competition testing. The sanction is two years of ineligibility or a reduction to at least 12 months, depending on their level of fault.
"(Kerley) strongly believes that one (or) more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location," read a statement from the office of Los Angeles-area attorney Howard L. Jacobs. "Fred will not comment further at this time out of respect for the process, and looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel."
The statement was posted to Kerley's X account on Tuesday.
Kerley won the bronze medal in the 100-meter at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a silver in the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He also has won five total medals at the past four world championships in either individual or relay events.
A 30-year-old Texas native, Kerley pulled out of the USA Track and Field Championships last month, citing a difficult year.
"The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles. Taking some time out to get back on track. No USATF Champs this year. Thanks to all my supporters," he posted.
Kerley was arrested in Florida in May and charged with touch or strike battery after his former girlfriend alleged he struck her in the face with a closed fist.
At the time, his attorney told The Athletic that Kerley was arrested without a "thorough investigation."
"Fred never battered anyone," Richard L. Cooper said in a statement to The Athletic. "We are focused on working with prosecutors to show that this arrest was a mistake and no charges should be filed. I am confident in that goal."

While expectations under Tengku Zafrul's leadership are for Malaysia to capture the Thomas Cup and an Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles, the badminton fraternity is keen to know the blueprint he has set for the sport since taking over as president on May 10. Subramaniam, who is also Selangor Badminton Association president, Tengku Zafrul is a leader with vision, and he believes whatever steps are taken will be in BAM's best interests. 'I'm happy working with him. The way he leads BAM and the approaches he has taken have been very good for the national body, and I can say he has his own clear vision,' said Subramaniam. Meanwhile, Perlis Badminton Association (PsBA) president and BAM council member A'amar Hashim is also eager to hear Tengku Zafrul's presentation, as he feels it is important for all council members to have a shared goal and direction. 'Right now, we council members are still wondering and waiting to know the new direction Tengku Zafrul wants to take, and of course, we are hoping for something better for Malaysian badminton,' said A'amar when contacted. He also believes that while it will be a challenge for Tengku Zafrul to surpass the contributions of former president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria, such comparisons should not be made. The reality, he said, is that Tengku Zafrul has the opportunity to build his own legacy, and Norza's work has paved the way for him to take BAM to greater heights. 'Tan Sri Norza's contributions were immense. You can see how hard he worked to establish the impressive academy in Bukit Kiara, as well as to attract sponsors to support BAM, along with other efforts that have become the foundation of the national team's current success. New challenges await Pearly-Thinaah in quest for historic podium spot
PETALING JAYA: Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah's quest to deliver Malaysia's first women's doubles medal at the World Championships in Paris (Aug 25-31) is alive and well, but it will take grit for them to make history. Women's doubles head coach Rosman Razak is fine-tuning preparations for the second seeds and another pair, Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing, with the target crystal clear — a place on the podium. Pearly-Thinaah enjoy a first-round bye and will take on either Hong Kong's Tsang Hiu Yan-Lui Lok Lok or Switzerland's Julie Franconville-Chloe Brand in the second round. Victory could set up a third-round showdown with Indonesia's Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Ramadhanti. "For now, we are concentrating on what we need to work on in training to prepare for this World Championships. Overall, I feel the preparations are going well. There are no serious injuries, and everything that we need to work on in these three weeks has been done to my satisfaction," said Rosman when met at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. If Pearly-Thinaah can make the podium this time, it will also help make up for the disappointment of 2023 in Copenhagen, when they missed out on a semi-final spot despite leading China's Zhang Shuxian-Zheng Yu before going down 21-17, 17-21, 19-21. "I think anyone would want to (win a medal). Every pair shares that dream. I believe we are heading in that direction and are training for it. Trio accused of offences including maid abuse walk free after charges compounded
SINGAPORE: Three people who were accused of offences including maid abuse have walked free after their charges were compounded. The trio – Avery Dahril Sateria, 27, Aaden Lewis Norman, 31, and Becraft Warren Russell, 61 – were each granted a discharge amounting to an acquittal on Aug 8. This means they cannot be charged again over the same offences. Under the law, only certain offences can be compounded, such as causing hurt and outrage of modesty. Compounding an offence requires an agreement with the victim to have the matter compensated, usually with a payment or an apology. 'After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, and with the victim's agreement, the prosecution acceded to the accused persons' request to have their respective charges compounded,' the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) said on Aug 15, in response to queries from The Straits Times. Without revealing details about the terms of the composition, an AGC spokesperson told ST that Russell was also issued with a stern warning. District Judge Wong Li Tein then granted the discharge to them. The trio had been accused of committing the offences in a unit at the Bayshore Park condominium near Upper East Coast Road between 2018 and 2021. Court documents did not disclose their relationship. In March 2024, Sateria was charged with one count of assaulting Sukiyati, a domestic helper who goes by only one name. Norman was charged with two counts of voluntarily causing hurt to her. Both Sateria and Norman are Singaporeans. Russell, an American who was Sukiyati's employer at the time, was not accused of assaulting her. However, he was accused of offences including knowingly permitting a woman identified as Taslimah Sadakah to allegedly abuse the maid.
