Teen paralyzed in pool dive finds new dream at SMU: "'I never thought about college"
Semyon "SJ" Williams Jr., 14, recently experienced something he and his mother, Anya Camper, never imagined- touring a college campus.
"I never thought about college," Williams said.
This week, he and several close family members toured the football facilities at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
The visit came just days before the anniversary of a life-altering moment: On June 20, 2024, Williams dove headfirst into a Frisco-area pool to escape a wasp and was pulled from the water unconscious — an accident that left him quadriplegic.

Williams was invited as the inaugural mentee for Team Impact at SMU football — a national nonprofit that pairs children with serious illnesses and disabilities with college athletes. The program began in 2011 and has since expanded to campuses nationwide.
"We've talked to a few other people in situations such as SJ," said Louis Camper, Williams' grandfather. "They've gone on to be very successful — you know, college and owning their own businesses."
Louis Camper, the family patriarch, has stood by his daughter and grandson through what he calls "medical mountains."
Pool accident changed everything
His friend, Eyan Cummings, told CBS News Texas he was there that first day of summer when William was seriously injured.
"All I knew was I looked at him, and he was just floating face down," Cummings said. "I just had a feeling that something wasn't right. So, I just jumped in and flipped him over and brought him to the edge. And he said, 'I can't feel my body.'"
The dive shattered Williams' neck and spinal cord. He spent more than 100 days in the hospital.
Teen regains movement, returns to school
Williams has since regained some upper-body movement. He returned to school and graduated from middle school. He's now preparing to start high school in Frisco.
His grandfather said the family has invested in aggressive therapy and purchased adaptive equipment to help Williams regain independence.
"That's going to allow him to be able to use his arms more and be able to reach and grab objects or things—a fork or whatever—and feed himself," Camper said. "And not only that, be able to brush his teeth and perhaps grasp certain things that he needs to use."
Adaptive tech helps with mobility, schoolwork
Williams uses a wheelchair operated by a device that responds to his chin and mouth movements. His family said he also uses the same technology to complete his homework.
His mother, a constant presence at his side, said she was honored that Team Impact chose her son. She still believes his story is far from over.
"I don't know what it looks like, but I know that it won't look like this," she said.
SMU athletes offer encouragement
While at SMU, Williams spent time with freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins from San Antonio and Australian punter Wade McSparron, among other players who offered encouragement and support.
"There's no manual in anything in life, and this is definitely uncharted territory," Camper said. "So we are just praying and just taking things one day at a time and just believing that things will get better."

Rookie locks in spot with Ravens but wants more than special teams duty

In the end, it won't count. LaJohntay Wester's magical punt return during the Baltimore Ravens' first preseason game sent shockwaves through M&T Bank Stadium. It won't be tallied in his career highlights, nor will the win he helped produce be logged on the season's ledger. Who are we kidding, though? We all felt a slight adrenaline rush as it became certain he was in the clear and no one was catching him from behind. The rookie described it as 'build-up' and 'emotion' pouring over. A sixth-round pick during the most recent NFL Draft, there's just something about this guy. No one dedicates an enormous amount of time discussing this, but landing him that late in the selection meeting feels like a steal. Ravens offensive coordinator raved about him recently. The initial 53-man roster hasn't been released yet, but if we were to read between the lines, we'd assume Wester has locked up the returner role with additional duties to be named later. Again, we're going to assume Wester has ended Baltimore's search for a punt returner. Might he provide a Swiss-Army knife of sorts to the offensive attack? That remains to be seen. Wester appeared in 58 games at the collegiate level, including four seasons with the Florida Atlantic Owls and his most recent with the Colorado Buffaloes, produced 326 receptions, 3,634 yards receiving, and 31 receiving touchdowns. He also racked up another 213 yards and a pair of TDs on 37 carries. There's some potential there. We'll see if the Ravens can find unique ways to deploy him this season. David Booth's $300 million gift to Kansas: How it will transform the stadium and Gateway District

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas has received a $300 million gift from donor David Booth, the largest in school history and believed to be among the richest in the history of college sports. Booth, a graduate of Lawrence High School and KU, already has his name on the football stadium. Kansas was expected to allocate $75 million toward the next phase of the renovation of the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and additional construction of the surrounding area, called the Gateway District. Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said the remainder of the gift was expected to generate a stream of income for the athletic department that could last for generations. 'There is no more generous and impactful Jayhawk, and we are so fortunate to call him a friend and mentor,' Goff said. The Gateway District's next phase was expected to add a hotel, additional retail and restaurant spaces, student housing, improved parking and an outdoor event plaza. Booth is founder of global investment firm Dimensional Fund Advisors, which managed $853 billion in assets as of June 30. The longtime benefactor made a $50 million pledge in 2017 to help with the overhaul of the football stadium, which at the time was the largest donation in KU history. He has given several other financial gifts to the university, including $4.3 million to buy and donate James Naismith's original rules of basketball. 'KU and Lawrence are a big part of my story, and it means a lot to support the community that invested in me," Booth said. 'Philanthropy, like investing, pays dividends over time.' The Kansas football team played six games last season in the Kansas City area while the stadium underwent renovations. The Jayhawks are set to play their first game at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 23 against Fresno State. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. Raiders' Brock Bowers has a new haircut after record-setting rookie season

Raiders' Brock Bowers has a new haircut after record-setting rookie season originally appeared on The Sporting News Brock Bowers is making a big change after a record-setting rookie season for the Las Vegas Raiders. He got quite the haircut. Bowers' hair was threatening to recede already, so he went with the simple option: a shaved head. Raiders fans all over social media were getting pumped about Bowers' decision. It shouldn't really impact him on the field one way or the other, but that's OK. He's already a superstar at the tight end position. MORE: Shedeur Sanders shows his NFL Draft slide might've been a mistake As a rookie, Bowers had 1,194 yards receiving. That broke Mike Ditka's long-standing record by 118 yards. The next record Bowers can set his sights on is the single-season receiving yards record for any tight end. That's held by Chiefs legend Travis Kelce, at 1,416. ESPN's Seth Walder predicts Bowers to break it, if not this season, than in the next few. "The start to his career needs no introduction: He had 1,194 receiving yards as a rookie, meaning his upside is literally record-breaking potential," Walder wrote. MORE: Taylor Swift is coming on Travis Kelce's podcast The Raiders took Bowers as the No. 13 overall pick out of Georgia in 2024. People have seen his potential coming since the moment he stepped on campus in Athens as a freshman. Bowers is 6-foot-4, 230 pounds and even was handed the ball for running plays at times as a rookie. Now, he's got a legitimate NFL quarterback in Geno Smith, too. The sky is the limit, especially with a smooth top of the head to keep Bowers light, aerodynamic and ready to dominate the league.
