While integrating Apple AirTag data into airline lost luggage processes may seem helpful, it may not significantly change the process, according to a luggage delivery executive.
Although location tracking can provide peace of mind and assist in some cases, a backlog in recovery may result from increased usage.
The most effective way to prevent lost luggage remains traveling with carry-on baggage whenever possible.
As some airlines get ready to integrate Apple AirTag data into their lost luggage process, one luggage delivery executive is warning that it may not be as big a help as it may seem.
"Technology is evolving, and knowing your bag's location may provide peace of mind, but the airline's process doesn't change significantly," Audrey Kohout, Co-CEO of Luggage Forward said in an email. "Many lost bags turn up locked in warehouses, particularly on international flights. Airlines need additional labor who can handle these unplanned issues. Someone must retrieve the bag from the incorrect location, get it on another flight, or pack it up for shipment to the owner's home, hotel, or cruise port."
While there have been some viral stories of travelers reuniting with their lost luggage thanks to location data, with more people telling airlines exactly where their bags are, the carriers may get backed up in tracking them all down.
"It takes two to get your item back," said Skyler Logsdon, CEO of Boomerang, a tech company that helps users digitize their lost and found experience, previously told USA TODAY.
Still, it's likely to reassure travelers if they can see where their stuff is.
The surest way to avoid a lost item, though, is to travel with just carry-on baggage if you can.

Step aboard the cruise ship where food is the main attraction
Platters of prosciutto sat next to dishes of marinated olives and peppers, across from handmade pastas. At the Caprese bar, I could pick from numerous options of mozzarella, from fior di latte and burrata, to be mixed with tomatoes, like heirloom and cherry. The entire room smelled of garlic and freshly baked bread as fellow passengers found their seats. This Italian market wasn't in the streets of Rome or a Tuscan restaurant – this was aboard Oceania Cruises' latest ship, Oceania Allura. With the ingredients sourced from the day's port of Ravenna, the market is another example of the small-ship luxury cruise line's destination-focused travel experiences. I was on the ship's maiden voyage in mid-July, departing from Trieste, Italy, to Athens, Greece, with stops in Croatia's Rijeka and Dubrovnik, Montenegro, and Ravenna, Italy. "What sets Oceania Allura apart is not just the refined design or the thoughtfully curated spaces, but the warm, personalized service and those intangible, heartfelt touches that our loyal guests have come to cherish," said Dominique Nicolle, Oceania Allura general manager, in a statement to USA TODAY. During the sailing, elevated food from not just Italy was around every corner – white-glove afternoon tea, cooking classes, a wine-pairing lunch and a variety of specialty restaurants. Some of the excursions at the destinations also focused on local cuisine, made by residents – such as a lunch served at locally owned winery Storia di Pietra in Montenegro, where we tasted a bright white wine alongside a strong shot of rakija, the local version of grappa. "Of course, our passion for cuisine continues to lead the industry, and Oceania Allura is home to an array of new dining experiences that elevate our culinary legacy even further, such as the debut of our first-ever Creperie, the beloved signature French restaurant Jacques being reprised onboard with innovative new menus and more," Nicolle continued. I don't consider myself a foodie, but it was hard not to feel like one during the sailing. More travelers are seeking out these types of culinary experiences on their trips, with 77% saying they want to plan trips around a destination's cuisine in Chase Travel and Infatuation's The Spots of Summer 2025 survey. The Oceania Allura spans 804 feet long, called "the most innovative and luxurious Oceania Cruises ship to date," according to the cruise line. Built in Genoa, it is the second in the Oceania Cruises' Allura Class, following her sister ship Oceania Vista, which launched in 2023. "Oceania Allura delivers the pinnacle of small-ship luxury, with an elegant, residential feel that instantly puts guests at ease," Nicolle said. The ship was designed with an upscale, modern style – an almost floor-to-ceiling crystal chandelier in the Atrium and the signature French restaurant Jacques featuring dim lighting and a faux fireplace for an intimate atmosphere. All staterooms and suites are outside-facing, and also generous at over 290 square feet, with the largest cruise ship bathroom I've seen. The entire ship felt spacious, even when everyone was out and about, with tucked-away nooks in the lounges for conversations and quiet escapes. It has a casino, several lounges, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an artist loft, a spa, a pool, a running track, and a library. For entertainment, there were nightly shows and a culinary center with hosted cooking classes – ingredients were pre-cut and portioned out, so all you have to do is show up and follow the chef's directions. (Four Oceania ships currently have a culinary center, and classes require signing up in advance.) The ship has a capacity for 1,200 guests at double occupancy, with two staff members for every three passengers. With the dining experiences as a focal point, there is one chef for every eight guests aboard and over half the crew are dedicated to the food operations. There was never a shortage of food, or long waits to get your meal. Oceania's dining options In total, there were nine food venues aboard the Allura, including four fine dining specialty restaurants (that are included with the fare): I also enjoyed the wellness-inspired food at Aquamar Kitchen, like the fresh juices and smoothies, and the daily afternoon tea in one of the lounges, complete with scones and clotted cream. The Viennese-inspired coffee house Baristas was where I grabbed my daily pain au chocolat, which was always perfectly flaky. What's new on the Oceania Allura? Where will the Oceania Allura sail to? The Oceania Allura will sail 26 voyages in its inaugural season to 92 destinations in regions like the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Canada and New England. How much are the sailings? Sailings on the Oceania Allura start at $799 per guest for a four-day cruise from New York in the fall, but prices can go up to around $3,000 for longer cruises in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Big Ten college football stadium rankings by Google, Yelp and Tripadvisor reviews
The Big Ten is not lacking for historic college football venues. The Big House, The Horseshoe, the Rose Bowl and even Wrigley Field are among the home fields Big Ten teams will play on during the 2025 season. But it was one of the league's newest members that currently has the best-reviewed stadium in the Big Ten. Nebraska's Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1923, had the best average rating among Big Ten venues, according to an analysis of more than 5,000 reviews doled out by users on Google, Yelp and Tripadvisor. The home of Nebraska Cornhuskers football finished ahead of some of its more famous counterparts and the list differs from the ranking of Big Ten stadiums published by USA TODAY last month. Memorial Stadium was slotted as the eighth-best Big Ten stadium in that exercise. But most of the best stadiums in the Big Ten weren't separated by much in terms of ratings, with 10 venues registering a combined average score of more than 4.6 stars out of 5. Michigan Stadium, Ohio Stadium, Penn State's Beaver Stadium, Iowa's Kinnick Stadium and Oregon's Autzen Stadium were among the other top-rated places to watch Big Ten football. From Hawaii to Florida, a look at US shark attacks so far in 2025
Sharks attacked at least a dozen people in the United States so far this year, data collected by USA TODAY shows. The most recent reported incident took place on July 22 in South Florida, when a Canadian tourist was seriously injured and hospitalized after a shark bit him. According to USA TODAY Network tracking as well as data from the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) and 12 reported shark attacks have occurred so far this year in American waters. More than half took place in Florida, while the second highest number of incidents happened in South Carolina, data shows. So far, none resulted in death. "This year's numbers do not look particularly unusual at least thus far," Florida Program for Shark Research Director and ISAF spokesperson Gavin Naylor told USA TODAY. Here's how many shark attacks the U.S. has seen so far in 2025, including when and where they occured. Florida (7) Florida leads all 50 states with the highest number of attacks (7) reported so far this year. July 22 (3 p.m.): Hollywood A tourist was injured and hospitalized in South Florida after a shark bit him. The Canadian was in chest-deep water with a friend when a fish jumped over his head and he was immediately attacked by a shark, Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety said. July 19 (time unknown): West Palm Beach A 69-year-old photographer survived a shark bite after he approached a 5-foot shark, while diving with friends in the Jupiter Inlet, The Palm Beach Post, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. The shark was caught in a fish stringer about 20 feet deep in the ocean. As he tried releasing the shark, another diver bumped into it, and the shark bit the man's right forearm. July 18 (12 p.m.): New Smyrna Beach An 18-year-old surf instructor suffered injuries to his foot while surfing, Volusia County Beach Safety reported. The man was paddling to a sandbar when he attempted to jump and push his board over a wave when he was bitten. July 6 (3 p.m.): New Smyrna Beach A 40-year-old man was bitten by a shark on his right forearm as he swam in the ocean, Voulsia County Beach Safety said. The man was transported for medical treatment with non-life-threatening injuries, the Daytona News-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. June 11 (12:11 p.m.): Boca Grande A 9-year-old girl snorkeling with her siblings and her dad was attacked by a shark and suffered a hand injury. She was taken by medical helicopter to Tampa General Hospital to receive emergency care. May 27 (time unknown): South of Pompano Beach A 32-year-old woman snorkeling near the pier off Lauderdale-by-the-Sea was bitten by a shark, according to NBC Miami. The outlet reported she was in waist-deep water when she spotted bait fish swimming nearby and a shark grabbed her left arm. She was treated at a hospital. April 13 (12:34 p.m.): Cocoa Beach A 12-year-old boy suffered a knee injury in a suspected shark attack near the Cocoa Beach Causeway, the Daytona Beach Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. Officials later said the cut could have been caused by his surfboard. Shark attack: American bit by shark boating in The Bahamas South Carolina (2) June 22 (12:10 p.m.): Sea Pines Beach Less than one week later, a teenager was bitten in the same area and also suffered a leg injury, the Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. According to ABC News and Fox News, the attack took place at Coligny Beach Park. June 17 (12:07 p.m.): Sea Pines Beach A 12-year-old girl was bitten on the leg in waters off the south end of Hilton Head Island, local officials said. The girl was transported to Hilton Head Island Airport, where a medical helicopter flew her to a Savannah facility for further treatment. New York (1) June 26 (4:15 p.m.): Long Island A 20-year-old female in shallow water off Jones Beach State Park was injured, data shows. The woman suffered minor cuts to her left foot and leg when she was likely bitten by a shark, The New York Times reported. She was taken to a hospital to be treated. Bahamas shark attack: 2 American women attacked Bimini district North Carolina (1) May 28 (11 a.m.): Sunset Beach in Brunswick County The Sunset Beach Fire Department reported crews responded to the beach just south of Ocean Isle Beach for a report of a person who suffered a leg injury swimming near 31st Street in a suspected shark attack. The swimmer, a 26-year-old man, was taken to a medical facility to be treated for his injuries. Hawaii (1) Jan. 11 (1:40 p.m.): Town of Haleiwa on Oahu A tour boat employee in Hawaii suffered a shark attack on the island's North Shore. Hawaii News Now reported the 23-year-old man was hospitalized to be treated for serious injuries. According to International Shark Attack File(ISAF), 28 people were bitten in unprovoked attacks last year in U.S. waters. Of those who encountered sharks, one person died. According to the odds of being killed by a shark in the U.S. are more than 4 million to 1. How many people die from shark attacks every year? Each year, according to ISAF, run by the Florida Museum of Natural History, the world averages 65 documented shark attacks annually. On average, six fatal attacks are reported each year, according to ISAF. Last year, 47 people were bitten in unprovoked attacks.
