Texas leads the nation in top-tier research universities
Feb. 26—AUSTIN — Texas now leads the nation in top-tier research institutions according to the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation's 2025 Research Activity Designations.
"Building a Talent Strong Texas is a bold plan, but we knew that when institutions, the Coordinating Board, and our state leaders work together we could reach these goals. This new recognition of Texas' growth in institutional research proves it," Chairman of the Coordinating Board Dr. Fred Farias said in a news release. "In reaching these goals, more Texans will be able to achieve greater economic mobility and prosperity as our economy thrives."
Texas now has 16 Research 1 (R1) designated institutions, which is defined by a clear threshold of $50 million in total research spending and 70 research doctorates awarded annually.

Promoting research, development, and innovation is a primary goal of Building a Talent Strong Texas, the state's strategic plan for higher education. As a leading state in basic and applied research, Texas provides students with opportunities to work at the frontiers of human knowledge, with hands-on learning environments like incubators, maker spaces, software-development labs, and other research experiences. In doing so, it is powering the global economy, and ensuring the state's competitiveness into the future.

Governor Abbott and the 88th Texas Legislature made historic investments in higher education research initiatives through legislation like House Bill 1595, which establish the Texas University Fund to expand the state's investment in research at Texas public universities, and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Consortium through House Bill 5174.
This year, 187 institutions across the country received a research designation of R1.

Giant plume of Saharan dust to hit US. What does it mean for tropical storm development?
A plume of dust from the Saharan Desert is expected to sweep across the Gulf Coast this week, bringing hazy skies and reduced air quality to millions from Texas to Florida. While the heaviest concentrations are forecast for the southeastern U.S., the eastern half of Texas, particularly the stretch from Houston to Dallas, will still see dust-laden skies beginning this weekend. Fortunately for Texans, the dust isn't expected to be as dense as in other states, though it may still pose discomfort for those with respiratory issues. It's also fortunate for residents of Florida and other Gulf Coast states — where the National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical system that has the potential to develop — as the dust could suppress and weaken the system that's right off the southeastern United States coastline. This refers to the dust carried by winds across the Atlantic from the Sahara Desert. Thunderstorms in the Sahara region stir up dust and push it into the atmosphere. The dust is then transported across the Atlantic and deposited in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. While it primarily affects Puerto Rico, it can also reach states such as Florida and Texas. According to the CDC, Saharan dust transported to the United States is a normal occurrence, especially from late June to mid-August. While Saharan dust can lead to hazy skies and poor air quality across parts of the Gulf Coast, it also plays a significant role in shaping tropical weather patterns, often for the better, at least in terms of storm suppression. Alex DaSilva, hurricane expert for AccuWeather, previously told USA TODAY that Saharan dust can act as a natural deterrent to tropical storm development. 'It basically can choke off these systems because, again, they want plenty of moisture, and when you're taking the moisture away, it makes it harder for thunderstorms to develop," DaSilva previously told USA TODAY. In addition to drying out the atmosphere, the dust also increases wind shear and atmospheric stability — two other key factors that can hinder storm formation. Although Saharan dust was crossing the Atlantic during the intensification of Hurricane Beryl, the storm was able to strengthen because it developed ahead of the densest plume of dust. This placed it in a pocket of relatively moist, unstable air — the kind of environment tropical systems need to grow. A light layer of Saharan dust is expected to settle over South Texas on Monday, drifting north into the Dallas-Fort Worth area by Tuesday. Conditions should clear briefly on Wednesday before a thicker wave moves in Thursday and Friday. Another round is possible over the weekend or early next week. A first-quarter moon is ideal for observing here on Earth, NASA says, because it rises in the afternoon — around noon — and is high above the horizon in the evening before setting around midnight. The portion of the illuminated half changes as the moon travels through its orbit. First quarter is the third phase of the moon's eight lunar phases. The cycle repeats about every 29.5 days, according to NASA. During the first quarter phase, one half of the moon will appear illuminated by direct sunlight, per NASA. However, even though the moon is half-visible from Earth during first quarter, it's not actually a half moon. According to NASA, during first quarter, only half of the moon's illuminated half is visible on Earth. A full moon is technically a half moon, because the sun is illuminating the full day side of the moon during that phase, per NASA. According to NASA, the moon will reach first quarter, or 50% illuminated, just before 11 p.m. EST, in the Northern Hemisphere on June 2. The exact timing will differ based on location. On the East Coast, the moon is expected to be at first quarter around 11:40 p.m. EST, according to The next first quarter phase will be on July 2, according to NASA. The moon's first quarter phase will be visible here on Earth. For those looking to catch a glimpse, NASA recommends a set of binoculars or a telescope, which will highlight the moon's texture and terrain. However, bare eyes also work. With no tools on hand, NASA says to look carefully and give your eyes time plenty of time to adjust — what you can see will vary based on your eyesight. When eyeballing the moon, you'll mostly see areas of either white or gray. The gray patches, called lunar maria or seas, are solidified volcanic lavas, according to NASA.
