
Texas leads the nation in top-tier research universities
"Building a Talent Strong Texas is a bold plan, but we knew that when institutions, the Coordinating Board, and our state leaders work together we could reach these goals. This new recognition of Texas' growth in institutional research proves it," Chairman of the Coordinating Board Dr. Fred Farias said in a news release. "In reaching these goals, more Texans will be able to achieve greater economic mobility and prosperity as our economy thrives."
Texas now has 16 Research 1 (R1) designated institutions, which is defined by a clear threshold of $50 million in total research spending and 70 research doctorates awarded annually.

Promoting research, development, and innovation is a primary goal of Building a Talent Strong Texas, the state's strategic plan for higher education. As a leading state in basic and applied research, Texas provides students with opportunities to work at the frontiers of human knowledge, with hands-on learning environments like incubators, maker spaces, software-development labs, and other research experiences. "To lead the nation in the number of R1 research institutions is an honor. Now we must continue to seek and fund new ways to build a Texas workforce and economy that thrives on the cutting edge of today's technology and discoveries."
Governor Abbott and the 88th Texas Legislature made historic investments in higher education research initiatives through legislation like House Bill 1595, which establish the Texas University Fund to expand the state's investment in research at Texas public universities, and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Consortium through House Bill 5174.
This year, 187 institutions across the country received a research designation of R1.

Critically endangered hatchlings reintroduced to parents at crocodile zoo
Three Siamese crocodile hatchlings have successfully been reintroduced to their parents at a zoo in Brize Norton. The hatchlings, born at Crocodiles of the World, are the offspring of crocodile pair Hugo and Rebecca. Shaun Fogget, founder of Crocodiles of the World, said: "Rebecca has had her hands full trying to keep tabs on all three young hatchlings, but is now settling well into family life. "Hugo was the first to show curiosity when they were reintroduced and has been interacting with them gently and calmly ever since – an incredible sight. The eggs were artificially incubated to ensure their healthy development. Once the hatchlings were strong enough, they were reintroduced to their parents. Crocodiles, despite their fearsome reputation, are known to be gentle and protective with their young. Mothers often carry hatchlings in their mouths to protect them from danger, and fathers have been seen carrying offspring on their backs. However, as a critically endangered species, the role of Siamese crocodile fathers is still understudied. Mr Fogget said: "We have reintroduced hatchling crocs of five other species before at the zoo, such as American alligators, but this is the first time we have done this with the Siamese crocodiles and will hopefully provide a unique opportunity to learn more about this understudied critically endangered species." The species was once thought to be extinct until small populations were rediscovered in Cambodia. Today, it is believed fewer than 1,000 Siamese crocodiles remain in the wild due to habitat loss and hybridisation. Many zoo populations are hybrids, but DNA testing in 2013 confirmed Hugo and Rebecca are genetically pure Siamese crocodiles. This makes the successful breeding and rearing at Crocodiles of the World even more significant. The Brize Norton zoo works with Fauna & Flora International to support conservation efforts in the wild. Earlier this year, Crocodiles of the World, the UK's only crocodile zoo, celebrated 14 years since its opened. It opened near Witney on March 11, 2011, with just eight species to delight the public. Now, moved to Brize Norton, near Carterton, the popular destination for reptilian enthusiasts is home to more than 100 crocodiles across 20 different species. Mr Foggett founded the zoo with the aim of sharing his passion for crocodiles and contribute to their conservation. The Crocodiles of the World Foundation is a registered charity and supports conservation projects around the world.

Scientists find surprising sex reversal in Australian birds
Scientists have documented a surprising rate of sex reversal in wild Australian birds, a phenomenon that could be explained by rising pollution or other environmental triggers. A study of five common Australian species, including kookaburras, magpies and lorikeets, found around six percent of birds had the chromosomes of one sex but the reproductive organs of another. The findings indicated a surprisingly high number of birds had reversed their sex after birth, said researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast. "This indicates that sex determination in wild birds is more fluid than we thought, and can persist into adulthood," said study co-author Dominique Potvin. The study performed DNA tests on almost 500 birds. The overwhelming majority of sex reversals involved genetically female birds growing male gonads. "We also discovered a genetically male kookaburra who was reproductively active with large follicles and a distended oviduct, indicating recent egg production," said Potvin. Sex reversal is well known in certain species of reptile and fish but is thought to be rare in wild birds and mammals. Scientists have documented how pollutants and even warm temperatures can trigger sex reversal in frogs. The cause of sex reversal in wild birds was not clear, the University of the Sunshine Coast study said. But it could be due to environmental factors, such as hormone-disrupting chemicals building up in wild areas. "Understanding how and why sex reversal occurs is vital for conservation and for improving the accuracy of bird research," added Potvin.
